Anaia hadn’t expected a response for her small show of affection to the grief-stricken man, yet he nudged her in turn.  She stayed at his side, silent but present.  She had no words; how could she understand his sorrow? How could she share it? She’d never even met the woman.

Then two new wolves appeared, side by side.  The darker of the two was clearly pregnant, and Anaia assumed this must be the Moonshadow she’d heard so much about. The man at her side sent the girl into a cower, ducking behind Kajika and inching back a few steps as he approached.  Half his face was marred by deep, ugly scars. His ear was torn, and one eye was fogged over.  As he approached, she noticed the rest of his hide was peppered in smaller blemishes.  Some bite marks on his shoulders and haunches were clearer than others, and some were hidden beneath his russet fur until he moved just so.

As if the face – which reminded her of Craw, though the scars were the only physical trait they shared – wasn’t bad enough, there was a dark glint in his eye that brought a whine to her throat. It was quiet enough that she hoped no one else had heard it, or at least mistaken it for a sound of grief rather than one of fear.

No, not here too!

Kajika had said this pack was good.  Kajika had promised her that she would be safe.  She didn’t see why this man would have any grudge against her, but that look was one she’d seen on her former leader’s face.  It was a look that promised blood. It was a look that only a murderer could wear. Here was a man that had killed. It was only a matter of time before he killed again.
