Sven Archer
for @Skoll only.
the second night after @Piety 's disappearance.
07/16 - Clear skies, 55 °F, 7 PM

The boy wanted so desperately to maintain his composure, but with each passing moment the feat seemed to become more and more impossible. The past twenty-four hours had been nothing but hell building itself up around him, from the moment he'd meandered back home at dusk the previous night, fully expecting to find his mother curled within waiting for him and instead finding the den deserted, to now this second settling of the sun between which he had not seen hide nor hair of either of his parents. He was used to solitude, sure, an abnormal amount given his age. The smallest Archer heir even enjoyed the freedom that came with it. But never before had Piety not been home by dark, and certainly she had never once allowed him to sleep through a night without being lovingly tucked against her side.

Not that he had slept at all, and perhaps that was an excuse he could use for his weakness. For by now, he was past crying, the tears having already run themselves dry through the passing of the day. It had crossed his mind to seek out another adult, his father in particular, but the pale boy was unable to bring himself to leave the area immediately outside of the small family's den. What if she came back, and he wasn't there? What if she left again to look for him and disappeared all over again? What if she came running back, desperately needing help? After all, she couldn't possibly be gone this long from him by choice. Something had to be keeping her.

The thought seized his chest, making it hard to breathe and even more difficult to think clearly. The child knew nothing of the real evils that existed in the world, but he had enough imagination, and the religion his mother loved so much and imparted on him came with it's own share of horrors. It wasn't that he thought about her succumbing to another wolf, but rather of monsters that crept through the branches of the trees, grinning with rows upon rows of needle sharp teeth as it prepared to launch itself down upon his mother and tear her apart as he had so many mice and injured chicks.

A low wail escaped his throat as the vision passed through his mind, and his body collapsed into the dirt, displacing a plume of fine dust into the darkening air. Pure white forepaws covered his eyes, and he fought to keep the violent images at bay. Despite how outcasted his family was, avoided by others like the plague, despite the unnatural freedoms granted to him, the consistently high lack of supervision, never before had Sven felt so utterly alone. He had always known that Piety was there for him, even if she could not be seen or scented. Until now. Now, that assurance was gone. Now, he was convinced that his mother was never coming back to him.

Sobs that were now so painfully familiar to him rampaged through his chest, his eyes burning as tears once more wet them. He was beyond exhausted, but the panic kept his mind awake, refusing to let him escape for any amount of time. Once more a moan escape him, then another, before the grievous sounds escalated into howling as hysteria finally, fully gripped him.

"MOMMY!! DADDY!!" he screamed at the fading sun as it lit the horizon ablaze, abandoning the sense of maturity he had begun to diligently try to maintain each time his father's presence was a possibility. At this moment, it was beyond even his comprehension. He was but a baby, forsaken without a single whispering of why, and thoroughly unable to shoulder the pain that such abandonment branded him with.

"Please... come back..."

Sven was old enough now to not need his parents' constant companionship. In fact, he was welcome to roam wherever he pleased as long as he was within the den by nightfall. After having so much confidence that Piety had merely taken some sort of day trip out to the Rise or into the Marsh, Skoll kept away, absolutely unaware that his little dove of a mate had not returned. That was, until those familiar wails reached out to him in the darkness like little teeth and nails snagging into his coarse fur.

"MOMMY! DADDY!"

Angier was sure to hear this if he didn't shut his son up; he couldn't take the risk of having Sven taken away or having his family scowl upon him even more than they already did. He could have rolled his eyes but he didn't. If Piety wouldn't step up, then he would. Skoll had seen how willing and lenient his step-father was when it came to Taima leaving her son @Octavius behind. Gus had nearly started to undergo the protocols of being groomed for some high-minded position - an advisor, perhaps, for Deacon if and when the eldest Archer-Lyall boy ascended to the throne. Skoll would have made them rue the day if Taima hadn't returned to sweep the red-furred pup away. He didn't belong here... At least Sven did. But that didn't mean that Skoll was going to let his family be wholly involved with his son's upbringing.

Like a shadow descending from the sky and over Relic Lore, the dark prince swept onto the scene, coming up from behind Sven with a gentle nuzzle to the boy's cheek. No soothing sound would come from him though - no shushes or cooing or crooning. Just a simple "I'm here. It's all right." He towered over the pale heir and, somehow, while Skoll gazed down upon the little Piety-lookalike, he both dreaded and loved just how small Sven was. One day, Sven would no longer be this way; but, for now, the cub was but a cub... anxious for his parents, for comfort, for security and love.

"Let's go," he prompted, tenderly nudging his stark black nose into the pup's side. "Into the den." One of his forepaws hung suspended above the ground, all too ready to start corralling Sven inside.

SVEN ARCHER
& the night is closing in

Through all of his misery, the tears that burned his face and the sobs that caused his chest to ache as though it would shatter, the exhausted boy did not realize his father had heeded his cries until he felt the man's touch. Shock shot down his spine, simultaneously with relief, but as he dropped his paws to the dust and looked upon the face that comforted him, ears turning upwards to catch the words, he would not deny the disappointment that fled through him. For Skoll to be gone at such length was expected; it had not been his father he was worried about. However, now that the shadow guardian was here, perhaps he could solve the mystery of Piety's disappearance. Wherever she may be, Sven's father would certainly bring her back home again.

Through movement and sound he understood that he was expected to retreat, to go to bed, and Sven understood that Skoll didn't seem to realize that anything was truly wrong with their world. Ears flicking back to hug against his skull, Sven's snout wrinkled in disobedience as he struggled to stay out of the den.

"But dad, mom is gone!" he cried, an edge of plea to his voice. "She didn't come home last night."

"But dad, mom is gone!" the 3-month-old wailed. "She didn't come home last night." Well, now this was news to the dark prince. He openly scowled, but it was not Sven that he was irritated with, and he made sure his son knew it. "It's all right," he repeated, a little more firmly this time as he raised a large paw to begin herding the little ghost into his hideaway. Sven persisted and Skoll saw now the frustration and anger in that little wrinkled snout and sharp ivory teeth. He mirrored his son's expression and posture. He was going to allow his progeny as much patience as he could spare but if this backtalk was going to continue, then some discipline was about to be in order.

"I will take care of it," he assured the boy, sealing his lips and meeting Sven's blue-eyed gaze. The centers around his irises had paled by now and Skoll impulsively wondered if they would actually shift into a tint of gray, like his and Elettra's. "Stop crying now, that's enough." His tone started gain some warmth in it as he went on and he hoped he wouldn't have to raise his voice again. He stepped past the heir, turned about and laid down with his back to the brambles and leaves, anticipating the boy to settle down at last. "Come here."

SVEN ARCHER
& the night is closing in

It's alright. It certainly hadn't felt alright; just moments ago, Sven was certain that the very earth itself had been crumbling and falling away from beneath his own paws. Yet the more Skoll reassured him, the better he began to feel. Maybe there was a good, benign reason that Piety was gone. Regardless of what had happened, father would find her and bring her back safely, wouldn't he?

The boy's tail tucked and his features smoothed back into those of an obedient child as he at last was coerced into relenting. Skoll swore to 'take care of it', and that single promise was the only one needed. Trusting in his father completely, Sven followed him back into their cozy home, crawling around lanky black legs and nestling himself against the man's side.

Something had gone wrong, but Skoll was going to fix it, just as certain as the sun would rise in the morning. Sven believed it with all of his heart.

At long last, the boy heeded his words. Those bumbling white paws navigated his father's own lanky limbs and when Sven cuddled up to a spot somewhere behind his elbow and along his ribs. Much like he had seen Skana and Piety had done, some time ago, he craned his head about and swept his tongue over his son's forehead before fully laying down. With one ear towards the opening of their little hideaway and the world growing quiet once more, Skoll took a deep breath and closed his eyes.

He would begin search for Piety later, perhaps as soon as the little ghost had fully fallen asleep, but for now, he would remain here. It wasn't like her to just... leave like that, he came to realize, but soon enough he found he, too, missed her. The thought brought him back to the days when he missed Elettra for a hours at a time. She would always come back though; it might not have been at the same time each evening or night, but she came back. As for Piety, well, he couldn't help but wonder if something or someone had lured her away.

His eyes fluttered open at the thought and an ear idly swiveled to listen for the boy's rhythmic breathing. No, not quite yet... A small smile settled on his features and fully relaxed, closing his eyes once more. If he had to stay all night, he supposed he wouldn't have any complaints about it. This - this moment right here - was probably what made fatherhood worth it all: to be there for his cub when his other parent was not available. A sour idea about Angier crossed his mind but he whisked it away; he would show them and he would show Sven... he was more than capable of doing this on his own if he had to.
