The sun was hot over head and beat down on the young Slayer girls coat. Looking up into the sky she wished the clouds would cover them amd bring the desperately needed rain. She lowered her gaze back to the ground in front of her. She didn't know how much longer the lake would hold out, what then. What would the wolves of the cove do once they ran out of water. With tiny mouths to feed they just couldn't up and leave until the water returned.

She was following one of the deerpaths through the cove. Any hope of finding water were long gone. Her hope of finding prey had yet to dwindle. Now that her leg was feeling much better she didn't want to waste any more time. She was chasing something at every chance she got. Her nose was to the ground so she wasn't even certain what was going on around her.

Through the forest and around some trees Kateri followed the trail. Though there was a slight limp in her gait it wasn't anything like it used to be. Her tail was over yer back as she searched for any signs of fresh prey.

She used to love the sun, but these days it just seemed relentless. She might have offered prayers to the skies, if she thought it would help. Instead she had risen early, her paws stirring restlessly as she wandered the territory. Paths that once seemed so familiar now felt strange, the foliage withering from the drought. At least the conifers seemed okay, and offered some shade.

At least she was home. The truth was, everything was different, and Stella didn't know what to do. Mother was gone, father was surely busy with more pressing things. There were new lives to look after, new burdens to face beyond her own daily struggles and failures. At least she had her siblings to turn to. When she came across Kateri's scent fresh on the worn earth, she decided to seek her out. She regretted the distance that had grown between them. She had been so glad to see her, perhaps now there was something they could do together to help, or at least make the time a little more bearable.

She gave a soft bark as she caught up with her shadowed counterpart. For a moment she loped along beside wordlessly, simply greeting Kateri with a smile and a shoulder-nudge, before giving her a quiet greeting. "Heya. After anything in particular?"

It was disappointing for the young Slayer that she had yet to find a good prey trail. She thought following the deer path would bring her some kind of luck. She knew that it had to do with the drought. She'd heard whisperings around the cove that the larger prey had left to find water. She wondered if the smaller prey were doing the same. Part of her didn't want to give up but the other part of her thought that it was useless.

Kateri remembered the days when you didn't have to go far to see a rabbit nibbling on the grass or a deer walking through the forest. It saddened her that things had come.to this. She was worried that this drought wouldn't ever end. That the lake would dry up and that would be the end of all of them.

A soft bark stopped the dark girl in her tracks. She turned to find Stella coming up behind her. A smile and friendly sway of her tail greeted her sister. "Hey, not really. A lot of the prey has left." She explained. Now that Stella was there Kateri decided to give up her hunt for the day instead she wanted to spend some time with her sister and catch up. "Are you settling back in alright?" She asked.

Kateri had asked if she was settling in alright. "I guess so," Stella answered, not really knowing how to phrase her feelings. It was good to be home, but she had hoped to fill the hole in her heart left by Kip, and instead she was just growing used to it. She didn't want to grow used to it!

There were so many changes to contend with, too. She was glad to have daily tasks to keep her thoughts from turning too much toward despair, but also angry with herself for even feeling that way. And then there was the worry over the drought, reflected in her sisters words, too. This was all bigger than any one of them. At least they could talk to one another.

"I'm glad to be back but... I wish things were normal," Stella admitted. She didn't really even know what that word 'normal' meant anymore, though. "And you?" She met Kateri's mismatched gaze, thinking of how much things were changing for all of them. She hoped the shadowed girl was weathering the storm better than she herself was.
