Koda Reinier
for @Nina, long overdue <3

The silver draped wolf stood silently atop the hill, all traced in hues of pinks and orange by the setting sun. He watched as the dark clouds from last night's storm drifted over the eastern mountains, thankfully taking their thunder and lightning away with them. He didn't care much for those mountains, for the trouble they'd caused in stealing his memories. He remembered it all now, the hunting trip with Shade which had sent him tumbling over the edge. In hindsight it was almost embarrassing, not knowing his own packmates.

He remembered seeing Elettra soon after... Forgetting her, even. He winced, gaze drifting over the treetops towards where the Willows lie. He'd lead beside the woman, not lovers but they had been partners. It almost felt like betrayal to have left her, now. He couldn't say he would trade what he had now, a prosperous pack, his mate, his young and healthy cubs, for the life he had back at Willow Ridge. But his sense of duty told him that he had indeed abandoned her, even if he had done what was the best option at the time. He owed the black lady at the very least, if not a gift of meat for her caches, at least a visit.

Koda wasn't sure if Nina knew he remembered most, if not everything, now. Nina seemed to have enough intuition to figure out most things, perhaps she could tell he now remembered his time in the Lore. He hadn't told her outright yet, only gaining his memories back as Cisco lay dying after the battle. It seemed an awkward, unwieldy thing to bring up now and he could never find the right moment for it with the children nipping at their heels. And still there was the shame of admitting how much he had forgotten and the oaths with Elettra he had unknowingly broken. But Nina deserved to know all and everything, and he tipped his head back and called a song for his mate.

Time had passed by so quickly and Nina found that she never found time to spend and quality time with her mate, something the alpha knew she should have done on a regular basis. She had been constantly with the pups, trying to fulfill their needs and keep up with them every time they decided to wander off. Today though, she knew that she would have to get some quality time to herself. As she went to the outskirts of the territory, she was slightly surprised that her mate was calling for her…outside of their boundaries. Happiness poured through her though, the sound of his voice calming any anxiety that had been building up over the days. It seemed as though Koda had always had that effect on her, even when they had first met by the borders of Copper Rock Creek, and her superior had very rudely tried to take his kill.

Remembering the memories they had shared together, she started towards where his call had sounded, slightly surprised to have found him in Blackberry Fields. Wagging her tail behind her, the woman’s happy gaze turned into one of worry when she saw him. As a Healer, back where she had learned her skills, body language had also been a skill that she had attained, and judging from her mate’s slouched form and hollow look, she grew slightly worried, until a thought dawned on her. He remembers. A small smile was brought back upon her lips, approaching the love of her life and embracing him lightly, trying to give him comfort in the best way she could. Nina had been so wrapped up in her life that she had almost forgotten that her mate had lost his memories. So with a sad smile, she spoke to him, her voice calm and soothing, "Do you wish to speak of it?"

Koda waited, wondering if Nina would even be around to hear his call. It was possible she wasn't in the area, and very likely within the sanctuary of their territory. Even with these doubts he held still, watching the blackberry brambles below the knoll he sat upon, the sun sinking lower and lower. Finally he noticed a movement in the fields, his tail waving against the earth as he could make out the unmistakable form of his mate. He stood to meet her, his head pressing into the fur of her neck as they embraced, breathing in the calming perfume of her scent.

As he'd expected, she could see right through him and knew exactly what was on his mind. He looked into her emerald green eye, giving a single nod. "I remember all of it now," he began, a fragility to his voice that was seldom heard. "At least, what I believe to be all of it." He elaborated, recognizing that indeed bits and pieces could still be missing and he would never know. That scared him as well, but was the lesser of his current troubles.

"I just, I had felt like I hadn't been quite myself. As if I was wearing another wolf's skin, even. Now that it's all back, I can't say I'm proud of what I have done." He sighed, head ducking down. "Nina, love, don't misunderstand, I wouldn't want to be anywhere but at your side. But I had sworn to stand beside Elettra and I had left her and my pack, just as if that promise hadn't existed." His gaze turned back up to her, trying to read what she thought. "Do you think I did the right thing?"

Ever since the woman had first met Koda, she had learnt that he was an extremely honorable wolf. Before he had even joined El’s pack he had been committed to her and had declined her offer for him to stay with her in Copper Rock Creek. She had also figured that when the time came, he would remember his promises and oath to the Willow woman when he had still been with them. Sometimes, Nina found herself sitting in the dark under an old tree that she would find, thinking about how selfish she had been to let her mate come back to her home when he was trying to recover from an injury. With much coaxing on her minds part, every time she came to the same conclusion: It was Koda’s choice to return with her and she had no power over his own free will. One fact that could not be ignored though was the guilt that she was sure her lover was keeping with him. She knew it must have hurt for she knew how good hearted her mate was and she would wish no bad things to come with him.

Putting her nose on his shoulder in a comforting manner, she tried to reassure him, though she was not sure how much she would be able to help, "I can’t answer that question for you, darling… What you think is right and wrong is up to you, though I’m sure Lady Elettra understands. If you wish…we could go see her, I’m sure Hollow and Azariah would not mind looking after the children? I could call them if you wish." She grazed her golden brown tail against his side, trying to give him the comfort that she knew only she could give. She had seen a change in him ever since Cisco’s death and she did hope that he would pull through it. Nina had never had to experience a family member’s death, and she could only imagine how horrible it could be.

Koda leaned into Nina's touch, grateful for whatever response she could give him. He didn't expect her to be able to solve everything in one fell swoop, and he immensely appreciated her just being there to listen. He sat still for a quiet moment, listening to the evening song of their breath and the rhythmic chirping of crickets in the fields below. Perhaps seeing Elettra would be best, and it wouldn't feel so much like running away if he returned to the place he had left so suddenly. His stomach did a little twist at the thought of leaving the cubs, and as much as he trusted his packmates' ability to care for them he was understandably worried about being gone from them for so long a time.

With a sigh he finally spoke, "I would like that, I wouldn't want Elettra to think I abandoned them all. I have no excuses, and I know she wouldn't take them anyways. But I want to make sure things are set right." He pulled back a little, so that he could look at Nina more fully. "Are you sure about going as well, love? I can only hope the children wouldn't get up to too much trouble with us away." Koda gave a small smile, knowing that for all things considered their little trio was pretty well behaved. "As a youngster I was a bit of a handful, only... Maybe they just haven't reached that age yet." He said with a small wince.

The smaller woman waited patiently for his reply, knowing that he would need a little bit of time to think over her preposition. She also knew that if both of them went, it would leave the rest of the pack in an awkward situation. Flicking her tail behind her, she backed away a little bit so that she could look her lover straight in the eye, her own single one glowing faintly in the shadows. At his words, a small smile crossed over her lips and a pleasant chill ran through her spine when he spoke to her. She had missed being around her love so often and now, on their little trip, perhaps they would be able to make up for that lost time. Clearing her throat, she strode forward slightly at his questioning her words. Lightly, he touched his mate’s muzzle with her own, a reassuring look in her eye along with her small gesture.

Wagging her tail, she spoke calmly to him, "Yes, I am sure. I trust both Hollow and Azariah. Plus, I have not seen Lady Elettra since the war." At the end her tone ends up having a bitter note to it, remembering the horrible things that had happened to pups from the other packs, and knowing that she would never have ever wanted anything like that to have befallen her own children. At his last words, a small smirk formed on the face of the alpha, her gaze drifting back to Koda’s own. "I think Danica and Tacoma can keep Ashton in line…like my brother he is." She let out a soft laugh before turning away from her love and lifting her muzzle to the air and howling an alert call for @Hollow and @Azariah. She did not tell them it was urgent, but rather that she would like to have their presence as soon as they could. Nina did not like having to be too bossy of an alpha, she still had an edge of subordinate in her blood.
