Calla Lyall

    “Where are they going?”

    No one answered.

    “What are they?”

Her voice sounded like glass chimes: lovely and a little sorrowful despite the innate loveliness (or maybe because of it). No sadness reflected in her eyes, though – just a sort of longing, like staring hard enough would entice wings to grow from her soft paws.

“I want to know,” said Calla, squinting at the sky. Now and then a point of brilliant light flared past, as if stars had decided Earth looked like prime real estate. Stars didn’t move, though. They were points of fixed light, anchors for a rapidly developing perspective. Calla knew these fleeting lights must be new things, but wasn’t sure just what.
The possibilities awoke an endless sort of wonder and a worried sort of dread.

“Hmm,” whined the young wolf, and she stood and shook her white fur out and moved along below the racing lights, her sleek form dappled with the many grasping shadows of the trees. She paused a few strides out and glanced back toward the den and wondered – was it safe to go so far? And at night…
    Maybe best to keep close.
Wary of whatever numerous, undreamt of things lurked far beyond her little world, she wove between familiar tree trunks with her nose up, eyes throwing off reflected light. She moved with purpose – in search of a thing, an answer to another question, one much easier than those first.

While she moved the lights moved, too. They frightened her a little – though she wanted, too, to jump up into the sky and catch one in her mouth. She wondered if that wouldn’t leave her falling far away into the sky, though, and decided paws ought to keep down on the ground for now. There was, after all, more than one way to get up high…
She found the thing she wanted jammed between two trees: a slanting trunk hung thick with moss and creeping vines, surrounded by the scent of dust and rot. It was a good smell, Calla thought – a reassuring, homey smell. She braced her front paws on the fallen tree and sniffed.
It answered in a puff of dust, a crumbling of ancient bark. She pushed against it and small flecks of bark chipped off and then with a bound as free as sunlight Calla leapt up, brittle detritus flaying out from under her short nails. She made a rush of it: a single, smooth, precisely executed little dance along the ribs of something giant; moving fast left little room for fear.
She stood a few wolf-heights off the ground when finally she stopped. Nose pointed down, she peered at shadows on the forest floor and then peered up into the night, where the dead tree’s space was empty and the meteors flared past in reckless splendor.
She wanted to touch them. She wanted to figure out their secrets – like staring might reveal some mighty truth. She lifted up her nose and sniffed the night air, frowning, wanting to get higher up but hardly bold enough to leap into the sky.

Mis-matched eyes unwillingly cracked open at the kick of one of his siblings to his stomach. He frowned as he blinked the sleep from his eyes to see who’s ear he was about to chew on in revenge. He knew they weren’t meant to leave the den at night, and they weren’t supposed to fight while they should be sleeping, but he had been having a great dream. He was just about to clamp his jaws about the cheeky rabbit when he had been jerked awake... but taking in the bodies that surrounded him, he realised one was missing.

“Calla?” he questioned with a whisper, not wanting to alert any of the sleeping guardians in case it was all in his head, like that silly dark wolf who had only been pretending to be dead.

Carefully he rose, gently picking his way between the heaving sides of the other wolves, there was no acknowledgment to his call, and so he made his way to the entrance of the den, heart thudding in his mouth as he stepped past the safety and warmth of the den, and into the cool night air. Someone had to find her, and he was bigger than she was. He had to look out for her, even if she was an annoying girl sometimes...

His eyes widened as he tilted his nose to the sky and started in wonder at the falling stars. He heard the gentle voice of his littlest sister a short way off and he took a deep breath to settle his racing heart while his eyes roved across the ground, looking for the little wolf. Finally he found her, perched upon a fallen log supported between two trees. He moved to the trunk of one, raising himself on his hind legs, front helping him to balance as he looked up at her, framed by shooting stars. The sight took his breath away.

“What are they?” he added his own voice of wonder to hers, taking small solace in the fact that at least she wasn’t out here alone... Especially with all those bobcats lurking about...

She expected… no one, really. Though she might hope Mom or Dad or any of the many siblings, aunts and uncles wandered in – somehow she thought they wouldn’t care. The streak of light across a perfect black sky spoke of silence, intimate. Though Calla’s feet stood rooted to dry bark her mind fell up into the dance.
”What are they?” Her brother spoke from somewhere underneath and Calla flinched and turned to blink, heart like a caged dove beating at her ribs. ”Oh!” softly, suddenly aware that if she was found by another – why, there might be trouble. Cubs shouldn’t really venture out, and not when predators were scented only days before.

”Ryvet,” Calla said, a whisper. Somehow her brother looked quite small down there though he was easily much bigger and a whole lot stronger than her. Something like a smile crept into the girl’s voice – peaceful, and not teasing. ”I don’t know.” She looked up at the sky again. Her tail wagged gently back and forth. ”I think… birds maybe? Little owls?” Now she said it out loud, the supposition sounded dumb. Calla’s ears leaned back; would he laugh?
”They look kinda like stars,” she said, suddenly knowledgeable to cover up her foray into fantasy, ”but stars can’t move, of course. I mean – what kind of stars would they be then?” It was all a little dizzying, this dance of light above the trees. She felt quite tall and proud high up though and she sniffed the night air thoughtfully.”Why are you out of the den?”

His tailed swayed behind his lanky body rhythmically as he looked up to the sky to try and decipher exactly what the shooting lights were. His brows drew together when she said they might be little owls. He couldn’t imagine he would enjoy burning like that. He had passed a tree that was struck by lightning once, and the smell that remained was not one he enjoyed. In fact it had left the hair down his spine standing on edge for quite a while afterwards. “There hasn’t been any lightning so who would have set them on fire?” He questioned quietly, his own retort sounding more silly to his own ears than her thought that they may be little owls.

“They look like stars,” his own pale head nodded in agreement. They did look like stars... but she was right. Stars weren’t supposed to move. “Maybe they’re baby stars and their Ma’s and Da’s are trying to get them to go to bed and they saw me and Renier running away the other night and thought it would be fun too?” he suggested with a cheeky grin. Of course it was ridiculous, otherwise this would happen every night... but if they weren’t little owls, and they weren’t baby stars being told off for avoiding bed, then what were they?

Her next question drew his brows together as he looked back to her with a disproving look. He wouldn’t even be out of the den if he hadn’t noticed she was missing. “Taima kicked me awake and I noticed you were gone.” he admitted a little sheepishly. “You know we aren’t meant to come out alone... At least if I’m here too you won’t get in too much trouble.” for it was a well known fact that it was usually the two brothers who were the instigators of shenanigans, and he loved his smallest sister with an intense protectiveness. He would gladly take the fall for her on this one.
