Asta Fleetfoot

"You chase and slow it down and I’ll take it down…on my signal."

Jessie's whisper was acknowledged with a slight tilt of Asta's head in the other woman's direction and a flash of yellow eyes. The doe didn't put her weight on that limb like the others... Asta prayed she was right. She doubted their luck and fortune depended on anything so genethliac as the stars or fate or luck... but Asta hoped they were lucky today.

Jessie was moving around the herd, getting into position. Their plan was simple: Asta would be flanking, Jessie tackling. The doe wasn't big, but any prey animal larger than a hare could present more than enough challenge and threat of injury. Asta waited eagerly for a signal, her entire figure tense, ready to spring at a moment's notice. The moment came when a bark resounded - the other woman's - and like a bullet that had only been waiting for the trigger to be pulled Asta shot off, scarcely a pause between breaths as she rushed toward the doe. Her feet flew - she flew. Her speed had always been her strong suit; her size and courage may fail her at times, but she could move like lightning. As the herd moved into a panic then chose a direction to flee, Asta kept her eyes only for their prey. The herd seemed to fade away around her as unimportant.

The older doe had already moved away from the herd some before the hunt began properly. It was a help for Asta, who darted between the circling herd and their intended target. As the prey began to flee, Asta managed to slip in close, her teeth flashing as she kept close to the doe's left, where she had perceived what might've been an injury long ago. Indeed, the doe did seem to run a little more slowly than the others and Asta was thanking her stars. Casting a side-long glance to keep track of Jessie's location, Asta waited but a moment as she came close to lashing hooves and lunged for the weakened hock... she did not miss and clamped on firmly. The doe thrashed, taking poor Asta with it; the young wolf didn't let go however, and the doe was forced to little more than a limping walk with a predator attached to her leg. There were a few times Asta's forelimbs left the ground as the animal bucked, but she dared not release her hold.

Jessie was not one who usually made a good team with another. She always found that she was…picky when trying to find the right hunting partner. In all honesty, Jessie hadn’t found the one she had always been looking for…at least when it came to hunting. She did not even like hunting with her sister, for the two were compatible, but when it came to hunting something always ended up going wrong. Asta did not seem to have the same problem though, they made a decent team, but Jessie knew that she probably wasn’t the hunting partner made for her. Not even Hotei was and the pair had hunted once or twice together. Shaking her head of the thoughts, she continuously nipped and shoved the old deer beside her, trying to catch the slow thing off balance. Hopefully, fate would be on the ladies’ side today.

Before she knew it the other woman had attached herself to the deer and this slowed the deer down considerably. She started to buck before Jessie could do anything and with a furious snarl, she launched her body towards the bucking deer, glad to find that she had caught the deer when it was in the middle of bucking. It fell over quickly and the salt and pepper colored woman took advantage of the animal going into shock and darted forward to wrap her powerful jaws around the deer’s windpipe and bite down…hard. She heard as much as felt the windpipe to the animal crush beneath her jaws. Pleased with herself, she watched as the life from the animal poured out in front of her. Asta and Jessie were going to have a nice meal.

Speaking of the female, she was nowhere in sight and in a panic, the Swift River woman called out to her. "Asta!? Where are you?" Her sea emerald gaze darted around for the woman, worry overtaking her. She had heard of such injuries when hunting and Jessie hoped that she was alright. Jessie honestly hoped Asta had just fallen behind and had not wanted anything bad to happen to the woman. If such a thing had happened Jessie would not start eating until her companion came to claim part of the kill to herself.

Asta Fleetfoot
So sorry for the delay! I've had an odd month (I've not been feeling well in between being busier... no fun! D:)

Don't let go, don't let go, don't let go... Asta chanted in her mind, jaws clamped firmly. She felt her forepaws leave the ground again. The feeling was unnerving - it always was - but it excited the hunter too, only making her more eager to prove she was strong enough... She became aware very suddenly of Jessie's body coming very near to her own; the doe began to fall, twisting Asta awkwardly.

For a moment - and a moment only - Asta felt overwhelmed by the shadow of the other she-wolf and the twisting of her own neck as the doe began to collapse. Asta would've ended up on the ground as well had she not released her vice-like grip. She backed away as quickly as she was able, avoiding the last desperate thrashings of sharp hooves. She sat for a moment as she oriented herself, saw deer and wolf stumbling away, then grinned in spite of herself. It was up to Jessie then, and Asta waited as patiently as she could... but she found herself rising and pacing nevertheless, her fur still bristling from excitement as she panted.

"Asta!? where are you?" Asta was a little surprised by the amount of worry in the other woman's voice. A little touched, as well.

"I'm fine; I'm here," Asta barked as she trotted toward Jessie with an eager grin on her maw. "We did it! You were wonderful," Asta compliment her hunting partner with a wag of her tail.

Worry was flooding through her veins, replaying the many accidents that had and had almost happened back at home. Eventually her anxiety was put aside though, for the woman soon came through the foliage. A small smile appeared on the salt and pepper colored woman’s face, relieved to see that Asta had not obtained any physical injuries that she could see, from their hunt. The compliment that flew towards her caused a small grin to cross over her features, dipping her head in thanks, "As did you! Now let’s feast." She flicked her tail in finality, settling down next to their kill and waiting for the loner to do the same. She then ate her share of the kill, pleased with how everything had turned out.

She knew that her time was running out though and soon she rose from her sitting position, covering her muzzle with her paw as she yawned. Stretching quickly, she looked over her hunting partner, a small smile gracing her beautiful features, "It was a pleasure meeting you, Asta, and I hope we see each other in the future…but duty calls and I must be going." So with a nod of her head, she turned on her heel and started back towards Swift River territory. She truly had enjoyed herself with the woman in front of her and she did hope they we be acquainted with one another in the future.
