The person that you’d take a bullet for is behind the trigger

The guardian had been testing the air in sorts, making sure everything was fine to sooth his suspicions he had. He told himself he was being silly, having little to no reason to doubt the dragon but there was this lingering gut feeling off of their first encounter. Perhaps it was just Karpos’ pride acting up, the offense taken when the injured dragon thought he could take his rank from him. The brute simply continued his idiosyncratic border patrol like he did when he first woke up in the morning. The sun rose in the sky, nearly at its peak. Truthfully, he had slept more than he had intended to, but it wasn’t something that he couldn’t fix and it had been the first time it happened.

No harm, no foul… right? Either way, the chocolate boy continued his patrol, intending to seek out Karina or Naia after he finished unless either of them managed to find him first. There was a certain interest and he felt as if both his aunt and the princess would be able to answer any questions he had about the man. His gait was pressed with a certain amount of power as his long limbs carried him over the now familiar terrain. He had his doubts about moving, but the Kingsfall had begun to feel like home despite the emptiness he felt knowing that another wolf he was close to in his life had abandoned him.

With Jynx’s leave he didn’t bother wallowing in self-pity because he was used to it. They got close, they left, and that might be why he had been determined to keep most of the pack at arm’s length instead of getting to know them. His adoptive mother had also disappeared again and it stung.

Karina Baranski

The Baranski princess paused her ambling forward progress, head tilting left and right as she squinted at the path ahead. The lush, verdant plant growth of summer was wonderful for her herb stores but a nightmare for her vision impairment, cloaking everything in fuzzy greenness that obscured from view even the most beaten paths around Kingfall. Karina sniffed at the air, her sharp nose telling her that the trail most often used by border patrolers continued on through the undergrowth despite her inability to see it. The girl’s discerning nose also brought a different sort of familiar scent to her; the unmistakable bitter aroma of the medicinal skunkbush.

The budding healer found the source immediately, the pungent scent pouring from the bush acting as a beacon to the sophic student. The girl selected an ogdoad of branches she wished to prune and began gnawing away at the chewy, live branches, attempting to sever them from the bush to add to her collection. As she worked she slowly began to perceive a familiar presence nearing. It was not unusual for her and Karpos run into one another in Kingsfall, especially when Karina traveled upon his usual patrol trails. It was strange, however, for him to pause his patrol in order to seek her out, as his nearing footfalls suggested her was doing. Karina turned from her task and wagged her tail slightly in gretting as the older youth approached.

“Hello..” she greeted him diffidently, body posture shrinking ever so slightly. Though she no longer felt paralyzed with anxiety around the swarthy young male, she was acutely aware of the sticky, green, bitter-smelling gook that fringed her mouth at the moment.

It did not take long for Karina to appear, and greet him though the tone she used was reserved, something he knew and recognized in her from her earlier years. The guardian-to-be smiled a little bit when she did arrive, dipping his head in greeting as he spoke. “Hello, Karina!” His greeting was chipper and upbeat compared to her own. “How have you been?” The swarthy young adult would ask, starting with some more casual conversation before he dove directly into the questions he had which pertained to the pack and more specifically, a dragon that had made his roost within the ranks of the wolves and the griffon they had as a leader. Karpos sought nothing more than to examine the case, because while he had doubt and did not trust Kjors, it could just be his paranoia.

Still, it was worth looking into, right? After all, Maksim and Lachesis both had their reservations about the man too, and Naia might – he hadn’t had the chance to talk to his aunt yet. He was still, not a moment of hesitation because he could handle whatever the youth had to throw at him – he was trained for such things. A trained detective? Perhaps not. However, this was Karina, whom he had always seen as the girl to never hurt a fly, so what did he have to worry about? He worried about a lot, the chocolate eyed man worried about what information she would provide him with. Sometimes, answers were sought, but the seeker never wished to truly know the answer.

Karpos prayed to whoever was out there that it wouldn’t be the case that day.

Karpos did not immediately divulge the reason he had sought her out, instead asking after her in a casual way. “Ah.. I’ve been well..” The princess answered, swiping at her muzzle with the back of her paw a few times in an effort to rid herself of the plant pulp around her mouth. She met his warm, chocolate eyes for a moment, wondering if she needed to expand.  “I.. I like it here. In Kingsfall.” Though perhaps it was not obvious from this particular conversation, Karina had come into her own since the move. The princess knew she had the Mother to thank for this; for bringing her @Kjors to teach her how to be a wolf and most importantly, how to be a priestess.

“Were you looking for me, Karpos?” It was not that the interruption bothered her at all (especially such a handsome interruption), but small talk felt strange between the pair of them; they had not had such a lengthy exchange as this since Karina was a child. Why had he sought her out now? “Is someone sick?” she questioned, concern etching across her youthful features. The girl’s cloudy eyes watched her companion with curiosity.
