OOC: Random Event: Lae, you disturb a snake who is bathing in the water.

a dream within a dream

The elder was settling in well to her new home. She had only met Askan, but that was okay with her. She rarely moved a few feet from the den, but she felt no pressure to go looking for friends. She had become quite solitary in her old age. Her ability to communicate was not severely impacted by her memory, but rather her life experience. She was bold. She only talked about what she wanted to talk about, when she walked to talk about it. Some days she didn’t feel like talking much at all. Today was one of those days. She was curled up by the water’s edge, wary to keep her distance. Askan had warned her, and she was not going to make a fool of herself by falling in and drowning.

She rested with her head on her paws, admiring the falls. It was a cooler morning by the water, something the arctic wolf appreciated. She was enjoying herself to the fullest. A large stick was placed between her lips, her teeth mindlessly chewing. She had been there for hours already. The stick was covered in saliva, dripping at the ends. She had forgotten it was there, drooling over it for nearly thirty minutes before tossing it over the edge of the water.

It was that action that caused the lady trouble. Her blind eye had not noticed the snake before the stick had fallen on it, splashing it with water. It quickly moved towards her, striking up and out of the falls. She heard it before she saw it, and moved according. Darting up, she quickly dodged an attack by fumbling to the left. “Nasty girl,” she hissed at it, reprimanding the actions with a disapproving tone.

Remington wouldn't have known a thing was going on till she heard two words. Nasty girl. That voice didn't belong to anyone she'd heard before so it seemed only right she investigate. Especially because she had an inkling it belonged to their newest member and she wondered who this nasty girl was.

Along the falls she easily spied the bright coat of the small woman. However it took her eyes a moment and her legs striding closer to see it was a snake she was dancing with.

With trepidation she padded closer, her steps slow..,exaggerated if walking on hot sand. Remi use to hate snakes. Her brothers always thought it was fun to throw their corpses at her when they were pups. The worst had been when she'd been napping and they'd strung a live one over her shoulders. She'd never screamed so loud and long in all her life. But she forcefully shoved that memory aside. Telling herself not for the first time snakes weren't so bad.

Coming to the side of the woman she didn't offer her much of a gaze cause she didn't want either of them to get bit. "You'd think it'd be holed up somewhere instead of teasing ya."

a dream within a dream

The old lady watched both the snake and approaching woman with her only usable eye. It was a challenging task, causing her to shift her head at odd angles, but sufficient. When the lady got closer, Lae dropped her head out of respect and greeting. This was the first member (other than Askan) of the pack she was meeting- at an incredibly difficult time. There was little room for introductions. She straightened her gaze back to the slithering demon and hissed back at it. It was awfully agitated. It shimmed into the air, its long pale tongue twitching. “I disturbed it,” Lae admitted, gesturing with her tail towards the water. “But she’s being stubborn.”

She fumbled back away from the danger, her teeth still comically bared. A few teeth were missing, causing her to look quite pathetic rather than dangerous. The two creatures seemed to be at a stand still, angrily glaring at one another but not doing anything. They both hissed, spit dropping off the old woman’s lips. Neither of them seemed to blink. Eventually, the white wolf took the risk and jerked forward, challenging the serpent. It skidded back, nervously, shimming a few steps away. “That’s better,” she snarled.

The woman politely acknowledged her, and Remi made herself only see it as a hello. Nothing else. She gave a curt nod in return, but her attention was mostly upon the cold creature which seemed to think about getting close once more.

"Does that help?" She questioned having never hissed at anything in her life. Not exactly like that at least.

"Where?" Remi made sure there was no alarm in her voice. Though she really hoped the elder lady could tell her. How much she wanted to avoid another.

At her rough actions Rem backed too. Her eyes moving from the woman who acted like she was facing a monster to the snake who wouldn't be moved. The lady probably use to be a fearsome sight, at this point Remi was wondering if the snake thought so now. It was kinda like a bizarre dream, and the side of her face twitched. If she might awake. Boldly the woman strode toward it and it gave way. Well there was only one thing to do. Join her. She tiptoed to it, crinkling her muzzle and throwing a harsh bark. It was satisfying to watch in slink away from her. If only others were so smart.

The woman’s help certainly made Lae’s job easier. By herself, she was not a very threatening sight, even to a snake. Remington’s bark and intimidation was the cherry on top. The snake seemed to consider its odds, glancing at both of them before slithering back towards the water and sliding in. Lae felt her body relax in relief. “Snakes like just need to be put in their place,” she muttered. “They aren’t always so misbehaved. Sometimes you can find a sweet one,” she was beginning to trail off, her words quieting as she stumbled to follow her train of thought. “That one though, well- that was not a sweet one. I tossed a stick into the water, woke it up.” She shrugged. Her sentences were running on. Her mind couldn’t quite focus on her next sentence, so she stopped, becoming eerily quiet. She concentrated. Had she introduced herself yet? Maybe. It didn’t feel familiar, she couldn’t remember. Her brain got foggy. Taking a deep breath, she tried to start again. Forgetting the previous snake discussion, she cleared her throat and smiled. “I am Lae.”

Thankfully it made its escape and she could cast any silly fear aside with it. Still she shifted from where he had fallen, and brought her attention to the woman. With her ears perked forward she was listening, not sure if she was only talking about snakes. Since they were not well acquainted she probably couldn't be sure without asking. She'd never thought how some snakes didn't bite and hurt you while others did. Though usually because they were threatened just like any beast. "A sweet snake?" She asked, a hint of amusement to her facade with a half twisted smile. Though as the woman further spoke Remi couldn't help but ask another question. "Why'd you throw a stick in the water?"

The woman was suddenly quiet, and creases drew across Remi's forehead. Worried she'd offended her. Then as if nothing had happened the woman introduced herself. Rather friendly. Okay. She wasn't quite sure what to think exactly or how to take her.  But the Keeper took note that Lae might not be all there a times but it wasn't necessarily bad.  She had lived a longer life. By the looks of it could have been rather rough. "Lae, nice to properly meet ya. I'm Remi. Pack Keeper." She brandished her own large smile, giving a wag of her tail. No doubt pride in the fact of the Edge and her role.

"So how do you like it here?" She was genuinely curious since she was new after all. Then she half wondered who had accepted her. Though she told herself that didn't exactly matter. If she was all right by Askan and Reyes then Remi shouldn't have an issue. But she wasn't so sure of that any more.

OOC: so so so sorry I was so slow on this

a dream within a dream

A lot of questions. Something the elder was not good at. Anything more than one made her mind fuzz up and shut down, leaving her reeling for replies. She opened her mouth, as if to reply, but gave a little burp and smile. It wasn’t an apologetic one, or an embarrassed one. Instead, it seemed almost unrelated- like she hadn’t realized she had burped. She nodded her head at Remington, completely lost but trying to hide it. “Yes.”

It was a definite, certain answer to a question that Remington had not asked. It was almost painfully awkward. She maintained her smile for a few minutes, looking completely brain dead but happy. A bit of drool began to drip from the corners of her mouth, for no reason at all. She was not hungry. There was no scent of meat on the breeze. She licked it up before it could fall on her paws and returned her attention to Rem. Think. She demanded to herself, trying as hard as she could to remember the course of their conversation. “Pack Keeper sounds important.” She did not have a role with the pack yet, except maybe elderly crazy lady. It was a small tidbit of information, something to let Remington know that she had been listening and had absorbed a bit of knowledge through the interaction. Once she had said the words, more of the conversation returned to her. “Ah! Yes!”

Her eyes danced with pride. She had remembered! “I like the territory a lot- it is beautiful here. I have met some new family.” The words tumbled out all at once, quick and excited to report on her time at the edge. “Like you!” She added. “Remington. Part of my family now.”

don't feel bad I know the struggle.

Remi had lost her somewhere along the way. Which was a little frustrating but there wasn't anything to be done. It seemed Lae tried to hide the fact, and Remi decided it would be better to go along with it. It'd be a terrible thing to lose your mind. She had no idea if it was something to be cured, or stalled at least. It wasn't like they had an experienced healer to ask. Would Lachesis know? She'd hate to go all that way for nothing. Even if she thought it'd be nice to help Lae some how. Or at least say she tried.

After the moment of an unwelcomed burp, smile, a single yes, and sudden drool Remi fought to keep her facade smooth. In the end she won out, looking as if nothing odd had happened. Patiently waiting for the other end of the conversation. She began to wonder if she needed to give her a prod when those eyes fell upon her. "Yes, I'm suppose to do all I can to keep the pack safe." Which she was beginning to realize entailed a lot more than just patrolling borders...not that she minded. It was just being around this woman and her lagging mind she wondered if she'd be able to keep her safe. She didn't like the idea of her wandering too far. Forgetting the way back or running into an unfriendly stranger. It seemed cruel to try to babysit or hold her captive. She made a mental note about it to get Askan's opinion.

Just like that she seemed to come back. Ecstatic even. That was good news. Perhaps she'd have little reason to go much further than the Edge. "Good," she replied because that was as it should be. Remi was momentarily surprised by the family proclamation. No one had exactly said it like that, and for this woman to add her to the list... It was a bit of an honor wasn't it? "Yes," she finally agreed, a sudden brightness to her eyes. It was just what a pack ought to be and she had every intention of taking care of this lady despite her wandering mind. Maybe this would make it a little easier. Or at least she could hope. "Would you care to go back to the den? There's a good bone or two I've hidden. I'm sure no snakes will bother us there." She offered quickly, wanting to keep her engaged. Also wanting to leave the area if the snake or any of its kin returned. She had to fight off a shudder at the thought.

Oh! A bone! The idea of gnawing away in the safety of the pack den was enough to motivate the old lady. It did not take a lot to persuade her. She was easily pleased. Remington's kindness was appreciated and met with equal friendliness from the senile woman. Lae thought Askan was nice, so Remington? She was an angel. Already Lae was becoming attached to her, wanting to follow her around like a lost lamb. She was not afraid of the snake returning (she had almost forgotten it entirely), but who could turn down a little treat? "I'd like that," she admitted, running her tongue over her lips wistfully.

It wasn't very often that someone invited to share. The woman lifted her fluffy white tail and wiggled it in the air, her entire butt shaking. She could barely contain her excitement.
