all welcome, 1-2 others. tag for @Kerberos just in case he wants to pop in again. late evening.
The fog is particularly thick tonight. You can’t see beyond your own nose and your sense of smell is dulled. You seem to be alone, but you can’t be sure…

He was alone once more but now he was getting used to it. The dull ache of hunger in his stomach was less constant as he figured out how to hunt smaller prey and satisfy the beast within. His legs and paws were still store as he lugged his frail body around, his rust-coloured eyes surveying his surrounding frantically to find something familiar. But all the trees looked the same. The rivers sounded the same. It was quite possible that he was just going around in circles but he was too tired to try and figure it out. Eventually he would run into someone again… it was how it worked. If he walked far enough he would find someone. He had still yet to find his mother and she still had not found him. Some days he was positive that she had given up. Some days he was not sure if he wanted to be found. Some days he really missed her. But the boy was in a little bit of a pickle. He could not always remember his name or her name, which made it difficult to track her down and leave breadcrumbs for her. But, he figured, that if she wanted to find him she would. That she would swoop in and rescue him.

His brows furrowed darkly as he maneuvered, slowly, through the fog. It was as though the sky had fallen and engulfed the woods. It made finding his way much more difficult and caused him to stumble over his over-sized paws more than once. It was strange though… despite knowing that it was later in the day it appeared much lighter… the white mist swirling around… illuminated by the moon in the sky… it almost made it a little less scary. But the fact that he was alone was still terrifying… especially when he could not smell anything properly and couldn’t be sure if he was actually alone…

She'd slipped away from the ridge just as she'd done a few times in the past. Only this time she'd gotten much further than she ever had before. Frankly Avella didn't think she'd be missed with everyone so caught up in their own things. The only problem now was she wasn't sure of how to get back home. She supposed she would find her way back eventually but for now she was set on seeing what was beyond the ridge. Maybe there was something more than what could be found at home or maybe she would regret the decision to venture so far away.

She wouldn't be finding anything out that night as she moved slowly through the forest. The clouds had seemed to fall from the sky making it extremely difficult for her to see where she was going. Her muzzle scrunched up a little as she tried to smell for anything that could give her a clue as to where she was. The masked pup felt like she was walking in circles and had even bumped into a tree. This had to he one of those moments when she regretted leaving home but she refused to go back. They didn't need her there and once the forest cleared everything else would be clearer too. In that moment all she could think to do was sit down and wait for that to happen a small whine escaping her as she conceded to the fact that she didn't know where she was or where she was going.

He did not really know what to do. The fog was growing thicker, continuing to pool around his ankles and fill the space around him. Oddly enough, he was not as scared as he thought he would be. It had been a little daunting, and unsettling, at first—as all new things were—but it also had a calming effect. Made him feel safe. It did not make sense but it was the only sense of peace he had felt since he had gotten unwillingly separated from his mother. He did not know how long it had been since he had last seen her—the days passed in a blur and it was impossible for him to keep track. He just thought that he would have been found by now. But maybe his mother had given up. Maybe she had stopped looking. Lost hope.

The ebony boy was starting to lose hope, too.

A soft whine caught his attention, pulling him away from his thoughts and causing his head to snap around. So he wasn’t alone. Instinctively his ears flattened against the back of his skull as he tried to locate the origin of the sound, his rusted gaze narrowing. It was possible that he had imagined the sound but he was sure there was something else out there. He continued padding forward, his little nose raised slightly as he tried to search for the whining in the fog…

Feel free to have her run into him if you like. I left it open just in case.

She didn't know if it was her imagination or not that the fog seemed to he getting thicker all while she'd been sitting under that tree. Avella couldn't ever remember anything like it happening back at home. The tree's were different in this new place, that she noticed. They didn't have the hanging branches like the willows, one if those umbrellas of branches would have been really nice right about then. Her head snapped around at the sound of a breaking twig and she was in her feet searching the dark for who or what had made it.

Maybe her parents had followed her? Avella wasn't ready to be found yet so she ran through the fog even though she wasn't able to see anything. She had no idea where she was going on even what might be in her path. All she knew was she had to get away from whatever it was. She looked over her shoulder for a second and when she looked forward again she didn't see the dark object in front of her. There wasn't any time to stop even though she tried by digging her claws into the earth.

Part of him told him to stop moving and wait out the fog, but the other part of him was curious to find the source of the sound. It was entirely possible, however, that the sound would lead to bad news. That he was setting himself up for disaster, or whatever, but he was too curious to stand still. For a fleeting moment he wondered if maybe the coyotes had found him once more and we’re lurking in the mist… waiting for their moment to strike… trying to figure out how many bites it took to make the boy disappear… He shook his head furiously at the thought. No, it had been too long since he had caught wind of the coyotes. As far as the boy was concerned they had fled the Lore—or at least, the part that he had ended up in. He didn’t even know where he was anymore. Wherever his mother wasn’t.

Without warning he was pushed to the ground (accidentally) by another. He fell, hard, onto his rump, a loud oof! escaping him. Instantly he scrambled back, away from whatever had struck him as his eyes blinked shut. This was it, he thought frantically to himself as he tried to escape whatever had collided into him, he was going to die. His luck had run out. It was about time it did… he had been on his own for too long…

It was stupid to go running through the forest when she couldn't see anything in front of her. She of course didn't realize how bad of and idea it was until much too late. She could run into anything, a tree or a rock. She could have even found herself running off a cliff or into deep water. She did end up running right into something but thankfully it wasn't a tree or a rock. If it were her shoulder would probably hurt worse than it already did from the impact and then hitting the ground when she fell.

Once she regained her bearings the scent of another wolf filled her nose almost immediately. The scent didn't belong to anyone that she knew so she spoke, “Whose there?” she asked into the fog hoping that she hadn't encountered one of those dangerous wolves that her parents had told her about. After a moment more or occurred to her that running into whomever it was might look bad so she added to her question, “I don't want to hurt you or cause trouble,” just in case they were a nice wolf.

His rump collided with the ground once more as he scrambled to distance himself from the wall he had walked into, his rusted gaze struggling to make out the shape through the mist. A lump formed in the back of his throat as the overwhelming feeling of doom consumed him. This was it, he thought bleakly to himself, this is the end. Whatever he had walked into was going to finish the job that the coyotes had started… The boy had already accepted his fate… There was no use running now…

Whose there? came a voice cutting through the fog—a voice that sounded the opposite of threatening. He blinked, baffled by the small (frightened) voice, but his lips remained pinched together. Just because it sounded innocent did not mean that the creature behind the voice did not want to harm him. It could just be a clever ruse to get him to lower his defences… I don't want to hurt you or cause trouble… came the voice a second time, earning a deeper frown from the weary boy. Prove it, he responded, his voice small as his russet gaze landed on a shape in the mist.

She just had to pull herself together and tell her that she wasn't being followed by anyone from home. She’d already been gone two days and no one had come looking. There was of course the smell of another wolf that she knew couldn't be a trick of her mind. She spoke through the fog to them hoping her words might gain some sympathy after all she hadn't meant to run into them. Avella didn't even know if she'd knocked them down.

Her words were answered however, at least she knew they could talk. It stuck out though that the other sounded like they were about the same age age was. Not only that it sounded like bvb aged run into a boy and he wanted her to prove that she meant no harm. Avella took a deep breath before taking a few steps toward the voice. Soon he came into view, at least what she could make out of him since his coat was so dark. “I'm Avella and I'm sort of lost out here,” she explained hoping that might set him at ease.

He remained where he was, his little legs trembling beneath him from both fear and malnourishment as his rusted gaze searched desperately for the stranger in the fog. His brows pinched tight together as he tried to get a better look, his maw tipping from side to side as the creature in the distance became more visible. Whoever the voice belonged to was not much larger than himself, despite sounding it, which almost made his shoulders sag in relief. He was still cautious, his tail tucked firmly between his legs as he stood his ground. The voice came once more, this time softer as the voice—the girl—introduced herself. Avella. He did not know if he would remember the name but knowing hers made her feel more real. He had a name, too, but he couldn’t remember it. Like his mother, it was gone. One day he would remember it. Maybe that was when he would stumble upon his mother, too.

I’m lost, too, he managed, his voice frail as he took a hesitant step closer to the shape in the fog. Where from?
