The cramps had been coming and going for a while now. Some days they were worse than others, but nothing unmanageable. Until now, they had been minor. The intensity of her pain had her cutting her tracking trip short. She'd been hot on the trail of a potential lead for her next hunting party. Mentally it was hard to turn back and leave the opportunity behind.
Sage crossed the border slowly, inhaling the heavier-than-normal musk of the males. Had she missed something? There'd been no fresh markings from Clover or any of the pack's women. The deeper she went into the territory the more aware she became of the shifting perfume of said she-wolves. It came with the self-awareness that she lacked the same. If she hadn't felt so icky she might've questioned why.
She made her way to a secluded area away from the den, a quiet spot amongst the empress trees where she could find some privacy. Sage lowered to the ground with an exhausted sigh. She curled around herself, pressing her muzzle into her aching abdomen.
