For Nori

A frown lingered on her features, a paw reaching out to tentatively rest against the ice overlaying it. She wasn’t sure how think it was… or how deep the water ran if it were to crack which had her hesitating to put any weight on it. The stream itself was narrow, so she supposed she could easily step out of it. It wasn’t so narrow that she could simply leap across it, presenting a few challenges she’d prefer to ignore altogether… with it, a gentle whine escaped her maw. The last thing she needed was paws soaked in icy water as she continued her trek. She still had some distance to go before she’d make her next stop.

At least she’d been able to catch herself something to eat, even if it had been small and scrawny… enough to keep the edges of her hunger at bay. Her nose twitched, the light metallic tang of the rocks along the bank that were stained a rusty red from when the snow thawed and refroze with the variation in the temperature. It was an interesting phenomena.

She dared it still, her paw setting down on the ice, able to see the sluggish browned water moving underneath it… but it seemed to hold the weight of at least her paws. She dared not risk it further, stepping and bounding to the other side. Her paws slipping lightly under her though she ended up setting foot on stable ground just fine again.

Her flank was healing well. It would scar, she was certain, though they were just a touch more than flesh wounds. She could feel the tug of the injury with every step, but it was no longer in danger of infection or of bursting open at any move. She had been good and rested until she'd healed well enough to be mobile without risk of injuring herself further, but she couldn't stay still forever.

Nori padded slowly through what should've been their territory - what would be, she reminded herself. The river alongside her was frozen over, but the liquid moved beneath in a way that made her unwilling to try and cross, so she simply strolled along it, quiet and lost in thought, until she caught sight of a stranger.

A girl. She placed a paw on the ice, thought for a moment, and launched herself across. Nori's legs had been tense, ready to lunge and help if need be, but the younger wolf managed across just fine on her own, drawing a relieved breath from her lungs.

"You okay?" she asked, tail swaying as she moved a little closer. "I was thinking about crossing myself, but I wasn't brave enough to try."

Kiona had been so focused on getting over the potentially precarious stream, she had not noticed the presence of another. As a result, she found herself visibly jumping when the voice asked if she was okay, her ears shooting up and her eyes widening as she turned her head over to see the ginger tawny woman. Ki couldn’t help but blink, a frown forming on her features although there was a pause before she shook her head. “Yes, I’m okay.” She managed to squeak out, though her heart felt as though it was pounding out of her chest all the same.

It would take time to settle, she knew that. “I can’t tell how stable it is, or how deep the water is underneath… and even if it’s shallow, walking around with soaked paws for the rest of the day feels like some kind of nightmare.” She mused aloud helpfully, her tail wagging lightly from side to side as she said it. “You might be able to get over the same way that I did?” She posed in an attempt to be helpful. She wasn’t sure how truly helpful it would be, and for a moment she’d nearly forgotten her manners.

“I’m Kiona, by the way.” She offered again, her tail just a little more vigorous than before, and a grin spread wide across her maw.
