The sun shed light upon an orchard of cherry trees, aptly named Wild Cherry Orchard. It smelled wonderful, a sweet tinge to the air, the smell of fruit. It clung to the trees and emanated from them, growing out from the bark and casting a sweet glow onto the paths. The afternoon was light and beautiful, with warm weather running rampant and with it, a happy wolf. The female wandered through the orchard, pausing every once in a while to close her eyes and soak up the sun and the smell. She would be happy if she lived here, and this was definitely a place that she would be visiting often. Murder could not remember coming here when she had been living in Relic Lore the first time, though she was glad she was making the trip now. She felt at peace, her heart thudding quietly in her chest, her muscles working warmly as they moved with her own movements, her eyes adjusting to the bright light in the places where it didn't have to filter through the trees. There had been no place like this on her previous journeys.

Her body moved itself to the roots of one tree that were showing slightly, curled into a small spot where she was able to lay down comfortably and rest her head upon her paws. It was a beautiful day, and she wanted to be lazy, enjoy the sun and take a nap while she could enjoy the time she had alone. Another may stumble upon her in a matter of minutes, and she was not into the idea of leaving her guard down, but this was a quiet place and she was sure that in her sleep she would be able to be aware of anyone who came near. She took one last look around, catching no glimpse of a creature of her own kind, nothing but small squirrels and birds flitting around the branches of the cherry trees. Comforted and content, she rested her head once more upon her paws and closed her eyes, hoping to be left alone at least for ten minutes so she could rest from her long journey back.

Valtyr Hanar Melian
Valtyr rested peacefully in his new, cleared-out den. He had not slept like this in a very long time -- not since the sickly sweet-smelling virus had claimed his beloved mate and children. Perhaps it was because at least for now, his days of wandering were over. The ebony beast had found what he was seeking -- a place far from his former packlands to settle in and start forgetting the past. He had yet to approach another pack's lands and ask for acceptance, but he first needed food and a great deal of rest to recover from his months of journeying alone.

Sleep was put on hold as the sound of another close by caught in his ears. Waking quietly, Valtyr lifted his head, his sharp, gleaming eyes peering into the darkness of his den. He softly crawled to the entrance and spied a young female with a pelt of every color settling down for a slumber at the roots of a tree not far from the entrance of his den. Laying down again, Valtyr watched her for a brief time. She was smaller than he was (that was not a hard feat to accomplish), but she was well-built and strong. Not much younger than he was, either. He did not want to disturb her slumber, and neither did he want to shortchange himself on his own recovery. The onyx beast let himself fall back into sleep for the time being.

Valtyr awoke some time later. Standing and stepping out of his den, he glanced over at the mult-colored femme. She was still there. He stretched out his muscles with a huge yawn, preparing to step off quietly and find some prey, hoping not to wake the girl.

When she awoke, the sun was still shining brightly in the sky above her. She was comfortable, and the sweet smell of the trees surrounded her. It was blissful and beautiful, and put her in a better mood than she had been in for a while. She felt fulfilled, and wonderful, no longer tired. She lifted her head, twitching her ears to turn them back on, her eyes full of sleep. She looked around, finding that there had been a guest in her sleep. Another wolf was slowly creeping from a den. She must have unintentionally been near his den when he decided to return. She was in such a peaceful state that she was not too worried about it, and instead allowed herself to stand and stretch a bit before pausing, yawning, and turning her attention back to the male who was trying to disappear so quietly. "I seem to have unintentionally trampled upon your turf, I'm sorry," She was quite thankful that he hadn't chosen to attack her while she slept.

Her limbs felt renewed, and she thanked the sun. She had been under the cover of trees and unable to see the sun really for the past couple of days, and as she laid beneath it as she napped, she was sure it worked its magic into her. She appreciated how the world gave back to itself every once in a while, and was glad to be a part of it. She turned her face to the sky, how the clouds moved slowly through the bright blue sky, sluggishly, forming pretty patterns. She then tilted her chin back parallel to the ground and looked at the male once more with a smile. She wondered if he wouldn't mind a small bit of conversation for right now, in one of the only times she was in a good mood.

Valtyr twisted his head to look back at the female as her lilting voice caught in his ears. He had been so intent on disappearing quietly that he had not heard her wake up. Turning around to face her, he let his tail hang low and loose as a gesture of friendliness, the tip wagging softly at her words.

<b>"My turf? Not really. I just consider that den to be mine, temporarily, that is. Anywhere else is fair game as far as I'm concerned."</b>

It was true -- from the scent of her, she, too, was a lone wolf. Even if she was part of a pack, Valtyr felt he had no true authority in this place. The den was coated with his scent now, and he would chase an intruder out as long as he was staying there. But it wasn't as if he owned the orchard. Much as the onyx beast would have loved his own pack, these lands certainly belonged to nobody, least of all him.

When she was younger she had always wondered what had compelled wolves to become loners, to leave their pack and to hike it on their own. It wasn't until she had become a loner and had begun to travel around and learn about different places that she truly understood. Her heart was a wolf, and as it was, she would always long to be in a pack and to be accepted and ranked socially with others of her own kind around her. It was instinct for a wolf to desire such things. But the impulse to wander and the desire to explore beautiful places was always much greater than the pain that it brought her heart as a wolf to be alone. And it was true that sometimes she felt as if she were so alone that she would not know how to interact with another and would truly forever be alone. She just had to keep practicing in her head or to rocks until she was able to trust herself. And while that may have made it seem as if she were mentally insane, it worked.

Now, when she was confronted with another wolf, she always made the decision in her mind to flee or stay. Other wolves were very rarely harmful to her, unless she was trekking in a dark forest and the wolves were notorious for causing trouble. She would be able to tell if they were cruel or not from the scent of their land, the warning scents in pack markings were always different and would relay different meanings to her. She would normally stay away from pack lands anyways, due to not wanting to intrude or be sucked into becoming a member. "Well in that case it doesn't really matter then," If he did not belong to a pack and was only temporarily staying here, then she didn't feel as bad. "Do you know these lands well?"

He hadn't really expected the female to stay and make polite conversation. Then again, Valtyr wasn't really sure what to expect in this foreign land. He had been alone for so long, and he didn't know the customs and the ways of this place yet. Perhaps it was rude not to talk to wolves you did not know. Perhaps it was merely a <span class='word'>sprat</span> and he was overthinking all of this. But with nothing to do except travel for the last few months by himself, his thoughts had kept him company. Atrocious company, at that.

Valtyr snorted softly at her inquiry. <b>"No, I'm afraid not. I only just arrived."</b>

The onyx brute figured he would know these lands well at one point in his existence, if he chose to stay here, that is. But truth be told, he would rather find a pack and stick with it, even if it meant rarely leaving its borders. He was desperate to belong to a hierarchy, to have a need, to fill a role. Some enjoyed the single life. Perhaps this multi-colored female did. Valtyr knew he did not, not even in the slightest. It had only been out of necessity that he'd been on his own. Once he grew strong again, he would be ready for pack life.

<b>"What about you?"</b>
