It came at night. Of course, Cammy had no idea what it was, but unless she'd lost her marbles then she was pretty dang certain that she was being followed. Ever since she'd arrived in this land things had gone from bad to strange, which was a bit of an improvement but still it wasn't good enough for the Tainn. At first she'd assumed it was a figment of her imagination, her way of coping with the loneliness but it happened night after night, over and over till she concluded something, or someone had to be out there. At first she'd wondered whether it was one of her siblings, that this was their way of getting their own back and showing her the error of her ways. But they never leapt out from behind a bush, they never pounced on her from the shadows.
As soon as the sun set she was always holding her breath, waiting for something to break the tension but it never did. No matter how hard she strained, her senses told her that she was alone but that just wasn't right. It couldn't be.
Her eyes were all sore, her eyelids droopy as she squeezed through the brambles. She was desperate to find somewhere to get some rest, any nook of these tangly trees would do, but what if it came for her? What if it finally made it's move?
Lifting her head high, the Tainn continued on, not knowing that she was treading through her ancestral home. It certainly didn't look like much, a tangle of thickets and vines, but surely it was safe. Whatever was following her would surely be kept back by the thorns, or so she hoped. A girl could dream.
