Re: title... just couldn't get that phrase out of my head. Also this takes place after Hollow's injury.
------------
The heat had finally broken and Iopah was sprawled on her fallen tree, enjoying the weather. Nina had brought her to this tree only days after it had fallen. That was back in late winter and Iopah was pleased that it showed no signs of decaying yet. At the base was a small den created by it's uprooting.

A distant scent caught her attention and she was instantly alert. Shoulders tense in a half crouch as she stared into the thicket, focused on a point too far away to see. Eyes still on the forest she jumped down, landing as nimbly as a cat. Without looking back Iopah broke into a swift trot. It was the smell of deer that she followed. White-tail probably, but she would have to be closer to be sure. They had all been so busy recently. Everyone engrossed in their own responsibilities. It would be good for them to come together with a common purpose. A pack functioned best when they were united. And, Iopah mused, it had been awhile since they had all hunted together.

She neared the border and the smell grew stronger. Several adult white-tail deer. They seemed healthy, but that was to be determined. They had all passed into the forest in front of Iopah, but she hesitated. She was sure of her quarry, but she could not do this alone. She sat on her haunches and leveled her nose with the canopy above. The last time she had called for a hunt it had been a surprise. It was not what she had expected of herself. Now there was no uncertainty. Her call was proud and even, dropping in pitch only slightly. It was a call to hunt, imploring all woodlands wolves to join her. Iopah stood on the edge of the border, head thrown over her shoulder, waiting. She appeared calm and collected, but her eyes were bright and restless with excitement for the hunt to come.
