A cool weight pressed against Kuru. He froze, flicking his eyes to the source. White fur at the edge of his vision. The younger wolf tried to relax, and risked a glance at his companion.
Her eyes were the sun. Kuru blinked and stared into the trees, past the snowy girl.
Maybe it was just the perfect reflection of pre-dusk colors, but that brief moment of eye contact sent rays of warmth into Kuru belly.
A second yawn widened his jaws. He turned to suggest they return to the shelter, but the other wolf was already resting her head on her paws. Her chest rose and fell in steady rhythm.
Kuru sighed, brimming with affection for his friend. We're friends now, right? he thought. The gray wolf shrugged and curled beside her.
Whatever we are, i like it a lot, he reflected. He closed his eyes and whispered a final phrase before succumbing to sleep. "Good night, Not-Spirit-Wolf."
