Not only was her less-than-owlish sound good. It was really good. As her teacher did a happy dance her tail and rump wiggled about with excitement. She hadn't thought it was that good but if he so thought then well heck! She must have been better at this than she thought.

Her ears stood tall with the slightest lean to them so she could catch the pale male's words. His instructions would be important if she wanted to make owl sounds just like him. Made her wonder if he really was a wolf. Maybe @Askan would know, for she didn't feel fully comfortable outright asking the hooting male.

Hawthorne shook her head up and down after his own who had ended. She could do that. Her chest puffed as she sucked in the air, ready to release the greatest hoot in all of wolf history. When she finally parted her jaws the sound that came out was something along a -

HoooowhOOOOO.

Dark brows pinched together with frustration before bright orange eyes sought out her teacher's face.

Her owl calls were —

Well.

They weren't perfect but Cottongrass hardly cared. It really wasn't often that he managed to find someone that was not only willing but also eager to play along with his childish antics. She was an opportunity he wasn't going to let go to waste. His tail wagged and his features practically glowed from the smile on his face.

"There you go!" He barked. She was already so good! And — truth be told — anyone that just tried sounding like an owl was automatically good in his mind but like hell was he going to tell her that. Instead he continued to wiggle and squirm on the spot from excitement. He finally had a friend to waste his nights with! From in between his parted jaws he let out a hoot of laughter and he rocked on his feet.

"C'mon." She had the basics down. That's all she needed for the next part of his plan — or rather — lesson. "Now we just, we just gotta find some owls to test it on." It was the whole entire reason he was out and about in the middle of the night. To harass and torment play with owls. He reached out to give her a nudge before jumping back out of reach.

"Bet I can find an owl before you can."

She lurched onto her paws, now standing. The excitement was too much to contain. Either she was the best student in the whole world or he was the best teacher. Or maybe both. Regardless his praises kept fueling her want to participate in the owl hoots.

Her tail kept an even pace behind her, swish swish swish. They were gonna test out their owl sounds! This lesson was blazing by so fast. Hawthorne wasn't sure she had picked up on most basic skills this fast. Granted hooting - while seeming like a refined art - felt a lot easier than hunting or guarding. Was there a way for her to work towards a role of hooting? An interesting idea...

"No way!" She was going to find all the owls before he did even if it took all night. Without much warning she bounded forward, ready to barrel through bushes and jump over fallen trees if that's what it took. Yet it didn't occur to her that she might not be as graceful in the darkness of the forest.

He was the slowest and clumsiest wolf in the whole entire world.

Why the heck did he keep making everything a competition?

It was probably one of those mysteries of the universe. The kind of questions that didn't have answers no matter how much you thought of them. Like how birds flew. Or how fishing worked because every single time he saw a wolf fishing they were either using their paws or jaws and he just got more and more confused. And those just might have been questions he didn't know the answer to but that wasn't important.

Not when he had an owl-finding competition to win! So without another moment of hesitation — Cottongrass darted forward into the brush. Because like hell would he lose in his natural habitat of all things owl related.

Fade thread.
