Kajika Tallis

There were many things to worry about in the coming months but having been through one winter in the mountain Kajika felt that they would be okay. Things had changed since the last winter but the wolves that we're in the pack had not changed much. They had worked well together last year and they would work well together this year. It would of course be his godson's first winter and being the proud godfather he was Kajika couldn’t wait to see how he reacted to it. The boy wasn't the first litter he'd seen go through winter in the mountain, the ones before had done well and Chan would to.

Greer shared that his mate was from the mountain which he saw as boding well for the heights pack. “Then she has some experience with winter in the mountain?” What the heights alpha said next struck Kajika causing him to nod in agreement. “No winter's aren't ever the same but having experience can be a big help I think.” At least he hoped that was the case, they could prepare for the worst case scenario and hope it wouldn't get that bad. Greer had spoken of being in the tundra which Kajika had been to so as he spoke again of the last winter term there the cove alpha could imagine it. “Winter was long here too. We worried it wouldn't ever end or that we might run out of food first. The trees helped a little though to break the wind a little.”

The next question had Kajika thinking back to when he had joined Fallen Tree Cove, he shook his head. “No, I have been here for two winter's and the last was the worst of them.” His first winter in the mountain wasn't too bad which he was thankful for as it allowed him to get his bearings in his new home.

“Some experience,” he responded with a swift nod. His scarlet mate knew the mountains enough to be prepared and to know what to expect. The shadow, however, had not experienced a winter in such high elevation. He was not fond of the pale, frigid substance. It made it difficult for him to hide amongst the foliage, as most of it got buried. He knew the mountains would get it worse—he just hoped this winter would not be as persistent as last years. There was only so much cold the thin, skeletal shadow could handle. “Maybe winter not bad,” he commented with a dismissive shrug, the words tumbling off his tongue absentmindedly. His tongue was growing weary and his mouth dry. He'd already spoken too much. It was both physically and mentally draining.

Instead of answering the male Greer offered another nod, to show he was listening and paying attention. The Cove wolves were already accustom to the unpredictable mountain weather, just like Kyna. There was no telling what the cooler months would bring this year. Seasons changed rapidly and without warning. This winter could be dry and warmer than the last (which he hoped for) or it could be just as bad—maybe even worse. Greer did not pay attention to the weather; he could not predict what would happen in the upcoming months. He just wanted to ensure that his family and pack survived their first winter on the mountain. That was all that mattered to him.

“Some is better than none, it will serve you well.” Any experience that Greer had would help him get through the winter.  He would know the things it took to keep himself and his pack safe and healthy through the colder months. Some adjustments would need to be made because winter in the mountain was different than it was in the forest.  Kajika had made his own adjustments his first winter being in Fallen Tree Cove and he'd made it through. As long as he learned from each winter and made any changes that needed to be made he felt confident that the Cove would be okay. After last winter and the way it remained long after it should have he would make sure they had plenty of food to get them through. “That is my hope but I want to be prepared for the worst just in case.” He did not want to get half way through the winter and have to scramble to make up for not preparing before winter. Especially with his godson, Kajika was not willing to risk anything where the pup was concerned. With him being the only surviving puppy of Moonshadow's litter he knew it would kill her if something happened to him. The dark alpha was going to do everything in his power to keep that from happening.

Fallen Tree Cove was a small group and each would really have to step up but if they made sure their caches were full and having less mouths to feed he felt they would make it through.  It was spring he was worried about with what had happened last year with Moonshadow and Des, he did not want to lose anymore members. He still feared something like that would happen again. With winter drawing closer he also worried for Namid and if she would return before the snow fell. With this line of thought the alpha commented, “The mountain holds many dangers, warning your pack of them can also be a great help.”

Again the shadow nodded. He did not doubt that Kyna had already started thinking about the upcoming winter. She knew these mountains far better than he did; therefore, she knew what to expect and when it expect it. Once he returned to the den he shared with her Greer would ask her about their winter preparations. What needed to be done before the first snowfall. Perhaps try and arrange a pack hunt, even with their small numbers. Ensuring the caches were full would be important, especially when prey sought out lower ground to avoid the freezing temperatures.

“Will warn them,” he offered, his voice soft; dismissive. It was time for him to take his leave and return to Aurora. Catching up with the Cove wolf had not been awful, but it had been tiring for the normally mute shadow. Too many words had tumbled off his tongue and his tongue was starting to feel dry and overused. “Greer must go,” he announced, his expression smooth as he offered his companion a small smile. “Good see Kajika. See soon. Before winter hopefully.” With that the Archer offered a final nod in the Cove leader’s direction before turning to return to the rock outcrop he called home with his small family.

Faded and archived

The cove alpha could only hope that the winter wouldn't be bad and that the heights wolves would be alright. There wasn't much else he could do for them at the time since it was left up to them to make their preparations. Just like it was up to him and the cove wolves to make their preparations. Many things needed to be done before the first real signs of winter, he was sure the cove wolves would he up to the task just as they had been the previous year. His biggest hope was that Lunette and Namid would return before the first falls of snow and they would be safe within the borders.

Kajika have the man a nod as he confirmed he would warn them, he hoped the warnings he gave would serve the heights wolves well. He didn't want the pack to suffer any misfortunes over the winter. “I should get back as well,” he acknowledged the Alpha's need to get back to his pack. “It was good to see you too and I do hope we can meet again. And yes before winter,” he said with a short chuckle. Once the heights alpha had taken his leave Kajika also turned toward the cove to head home.
