He had thought that perhaps if he'd kept all the pieces closely together, they might begin to glue themselves back into place. Yet they proved to be obstreperous, splintering off and avoiding one another. The king was unable to blame them for such actions, as he was guilty himself of wanting to avoid the grief that hung palpably within the air atop their mountain home, yet he wished dearly for them to change their ways and seal their cracks themselves. To recover on their own for he did not know how to help them. While Raela had seemed to find him quite suitable in doling out comfort, he knew that he was utterly lacking in the skill set, and felt uncomfortable regardless wallowing through the sadness of others. Yet as each day passed and he realized that they would all only continue to drift further apart unless something was done, the king solidified his resolve once more.
It was as though the pack owned two litters at this point, @Draven seeking his own sort of solitude with Calanthe forever acting as his shadow, while Ari and Kino were often together and separated in a different sort of way. Kino's aggression and blatant disrespect would not be easily forgotten, just as his dismissal of Gent's role as his father would leave a permanent cut into their bond. Yet they were still children under his care, and they were grieving their mother's loss all the same. Knowing them to have less of a support system than Draven at this moment, it was the duo alone that the king sought out this afternoon, hoping to restore some normality to their lives with a hunt or some other activity.
Perhaps if he had been attentive from the start, he would have known that Marianna's wandering had extended outside of the pack's territory and far beyond the limits of what the king had made clear was acceptable. While she was not always within his sights, he had thought she would still respect him as her father and obey him. It could not be known by the shadow monarch that Kino was not alone in dissociating himself from Gent, that the other two thought themselves also separated and estranged by Minka's death. Thus when he sought his young and discovered that their trails continued beyond the borders of his domain, alarm bells began to ring within every nerve.
Striking forward with an invigored stride, the king began his search as the rain began to fall, soft at first but with increasing intensity with each passing minute. The tirade erased their scents, and he began to call out to them. Gent attempted to stunt the panic that threatened to rise within him, but there were cracks within the dam and the icy waters were leaking out.
"Ari?" he called, his strong voice powering through the downpour. "Marianna! Kino!"
What if they had run away? What if they had been injured, attacked, kidnapped? What if they had fallen victim to his unintended neglect, what if he lost what was left of Minka?
