Tit for Tat, This or That

Glittering on the edge of the water is a bright red fish scale, possibly from some sort of salmon. Surprisingly there are no other scales around. Looks like it could make a nice den decoration, don't you think?

It was to just stretch her legs, that get out of the cedar trees she had been clinging far too closely the last few weeks. She doesn't know what had come over her but with the birth of the pups, the flash floods and twins tornadoes had greatly unsettled her and left her a little breathless. It would make sense if she wanted to stay close by. But something deeper told her it was something else.

It didn't matter now though. She had caught her breath within her cedar filled home and suddenly felt over whelmed by it all. She had to get out and out she did. Crossing over the borders in a trot, she let out a simple howl to tell anyone nearby she was going out for a small herb mission and would be back in a few hours.  It probably wasn't necessary but she didn't want someone to find her scent going out over the borders and put doubt in their minds. She would be coming back after all and a sharp eye is always kept for plants she thinks might be useful. The few herbs that she had seen in the medicine cache she had not recognized had been burnt into her mind, with both their smell and sight. Even if they were dried up and slightly shriveled, she was fairly certain she could recognize them in their fresh state.

Eventually, with her mind absently thinking, her trot brought the grey scale dame to the edge of a lagoon. Amaryllis blinked as her toes became slightly wet, not having realized just how caught up in her mind she had been as she stared down at where water met land. The grass was growing in abundance, tall and green and vibrant. The water was still which made her wonder if any fish lived beneath it and simply didn't disturb the surface. She'd have to bring @Pip here at some point. As her eyes wandered over the lagoon, something caught her eye. The sunlight was hitting it, making it glint and causing Amaryllis to frown.  It was a bright red fish scale, almost like a salmon's scale. What was it doing there? Had a bear caught the fish and discarded the scale while eating the rest? But why was it there anyway? Bears weren't exactly neat eaters when it came it to descaling fish but she figured it would have floated off by now, even in the mirror like water.

Though, I thought bears would eat the scales anyway. She thought to herself as she inched closer to the scale, not wanting to disturb its place with in the water. Was it just her imagination or was the scale larger then what she thought a scale could get? Carefully, she picked it up on her tongue and took a few steps back from the edge, managing to place it back down on a small flat stone. It was pretty regardless and she wondered if Oula would mind it as a gift for the pups. It was still glittering in the sunlight so maybe it would keep the young ones attention for a short time.

She took at deep breath, deciding the gift could be given in a little bit but instead froze to the spot.

How the hell had she missed the scent of a bear?!Whipping her head around, Amaryllis scanned the area around her but saw nothing that looked remotely like a Bear.  Her hackles were still raised as she slowly turned on the spot, not wanting to leave out the possibility of looking behind her. Bears could stealthy when they wanted, she knew. For such big animals, it was possible they could move just as swiftly and quietly as a wolf.

Either way, it was better if she left now. If this was a bear's hunting ground, it would surely come back and she did not want to get in between it and it's next meal.

Turning around to pick up the nearly discarded scale, she just hoped the bear wouldn't come right now.

wrap up since no one else joined in the last two weeks

Thankfully, no bear decided to pop out and make a meal out of Amaryllis today, so the wolf gently scooped up the scale and hurried off. She did not want to take any chances by dawdling too long here, in case the bear was on its way but taking its lumbering time.

What was the scale doing, just floating there? She wondered as she trotted away, the slight weight of it settling on her tongue. Even in still water, it felt like it should have floated away or even been spotted by a bird or other animal to use in its nest to attract a mate. The size of it confused her even more. While she did not fish herself, she was still somewhat familiar with fish and their scales and it appeared the scale seemed far too big in her opinion. Maybe she could show it to Pip and see her reaction? However, it could just be her imagination and this was an average sized scale from a big fish.

Shaking her head, Amaryllis found she was soon back in the safety of her pack borders and relaxed, heading towards her den to drop off the scale. She couldn’t talk with it in her mouth and she had no idea how’d she’d explain it to her packmates just yet anyway. -exit-
