Larkcall Lowlands Stuck in the Mud

Random event: Neko, you have become stuck in a deep pool of mud!

Inexcusable! Neko scolded herself. There was no excuse for a seasoned traveler to make such a mistake. Since she was a pup, she had known of the dangers of trying to walk on wet, unstable ground. For most of her journey from Turtleback Lake to the lowlands, she had avoided soft ground, but she was young, energetic, and easily distracted, and the lowlands boasted a smorgasbord of wildlife.

Somewhere along the way, she had taken to chasing rabbits. Half of her attention was on the rabbit, and the other half was on thinking about how she would introduce herself to the pack she was hoping to join. She didn’t notice the soft muddy patch of ground near the banks of the creek. The mud did not give way beneath the light weight of the rabbit, but her weight was too much.

While the mud was soft enough for her too sink, it was still solid enough that she couldn’t easily swim in it, and it was deep enough that her feet couldn’t reach solid ground. When she was a pup, her parents had taught her how to get out of quicksand, and she thought it might work in this situation as well, but first she would have to relax. The problem was that she was not relaxed. She had been running and was breathing heavily, and her heart was pounding. She forced herself to stop struggling and took a few deep breaths to relax herself.

To add insult to injury, she had just bathed and groomed herself, and now she was covered in mud. She would definitely need another bath once she got out of this pit.
