Wendigo
For @Kyna and @Greer
A couple of hours after this thread
special mention for @Rhamnus and @Revon

Wendigo and Rhamnus were easily bored. And, when they were bored they were dangerous and not just in the way pups were when they were bored and might wander too far. When these kids were bored somebody often ended up hurt. Or worse. Which was exactly how this plot was winding up, bored with the wait for spring and with Rhamnus’ vengeful heart they had set out with someone to torment. The siblings had separated a week or two before to fan out and see what they could find and when the yearling had returned his sister’s trail had been fresh.

Picking up his pace the teen made easy work going up the mountain, his long muscular legs coming in handy for the incline. The ice and snow slowed him significantly from what he might have done in the summer but Wendigo had no major complaints about the time he made. Much to his surprise he encountered Rhamnus when she was on her way back down the mountain with a dark coloured pup in tow. Rather than stop and interrogate her about what exactly she had planned they had passed a sly grin and the woman had tossed a gesture over her shoulder.

They had been playing this game long enough that Wendigo knew exactly what that meant.

Finding himself on the border a few hours after whatever his sister had done to convince the girl to go with her the yearling painted on his best concerned expression. Once he was sure he had it just perfect he raised his dark muzzle to the sky and called for the leaders in alarm. Their little lamb had been taken by the big bad wolf.

The alarm was not a good sound – though from a stranger? That was worse. It could mean one of two things: they were about to deal with a very needy lone wolf (for it did not sound like one of Aponi’s), or they were about to walk into a trap. Kyna had never seen such a thing before, but she’d seen how wolves challenge alphas, and it did not strike her as outside the realm of possibilities. She did not know where Greer was just now, but rather hoped he (or one of her larger packmates) had also heard the cry. Likewise, she rather hoped that Revon did not.

Kyna drew to a halt, hackles up and tail arched gracefully above her haunches as she sized the stranger up. A youngling. But she remained firmly near her borders, eyes searching, nose working—

“Why have you called?”

The call earned a puzzled expression from the silver-eyed shadow, causing his paws to fumble over each other as he abruptly changed his course. Something was wrong but it was not a voice that he recognized. It was urgent and demanding; the sound of someone that wanted to be heard and answered promptly. His lips tightened into a grimace as he hurried toward the borders, his long legs making haste as he answered the stranger’s call.

He was pleased to see his wife’s scarlet figure in the distance as he approached, a weight of relief shedding from his shoulders as he sidled up beside her. The dark wolf before them did not carry the scent of one of the neighbouring packs—a rogue. An eager rogue. His nose wrinkled, silver eyes sweeping over to his mate briefly. Either the wolf was looking for a home or they were looking for something else. In typical Greer fashion he remained silent, only giving a small flick of his nose to encourage the loner to answer quickly. The alarm had sounded urgent and the loner had received its audience; there was no point in wasting time.

Wendigo

Wendigo had been raised to be an assassin, but he was also a pretty good actor. So after he had called he had dropped his ears back diligently and painted his maw with concern and did his best to look non-threatening. This was sometimes hard with the sheer size of him but he would do what he could to shrink himself down. That usually seemed to help his case a little, if he looked smaller than he actually was.

The alphas didn’t keep him waiting long, and within minutes he was greeted by a proud blonde wolf who would really have been quite pretty if not for her unfortunate fur colour. A pity. Maybe if her and her mate had been pure Wendigo and Rhamnus would have left their child alone, but the gods had brought them here to teach everyone a lesson and they would be the first to receive it.

Keeping his orange eyes respectfully fixed on the paws of the proud woman and her silent guardian he stuttered out, ”I well. You see I don’t, well, I don’t even know if I should be saying this but-.” Wendigo widened his eyes dramatically and chanced a glance upwards to see how his snivelling was going over, ”I saw your pup. Or I assume she was yours, she smells like you guys, that’s not really the point, um.“ He swallowing loudly now, tucking his tail to his belly. It wasn’t shameful if it was all a disguise. ”The girl I saw was being accosted down the mountain, she looked kind of scared or at least unhappy and um I just thought you might want to know.” Please oh please ask him who had taken their pup, that was the good part.

Kyna Argyris Archer

Kyna's first thought was 'our pup? How would he know?' but that was quickly lost as the loner kept rambling, because everything following that was worse. Much worse. Her legs felt like quicksand as her knees locked, orange eyes growing as her mind went spinning away.

"Revon…" she croaked, tail quivering. It was all she could do not to stumble, to fall. Her heart felt like it had stopped altogether, dropped like a stone into the center of her gut. How? Why? Who?

Was this her fault, letting the girl have some freedom?

"Who? Who did you see with her? Was it another pup?"

Please, just let it be Romanov, please.

He pressed his shoulder into Kyna’s as the stranger spoke, his mercury gaze narrowing. Your pup. His ears quivered. It wasn’t a good way to start off a conversation… and it got worse. She was being accosted down the mountain? His lips fell into a tight line, a flash of white-hot fury burning deep within his chest. His thoughts mirrored his wife’s: had they given the girl too much freedom? Scenarios filled his head… why hadn’t an Aurora wolf been with her? Where had he been? Kyna? His stomach continued to turn as a sour taste filled his mouth. Someone had taken their daughter. His legs tensed, ready to sprint away from the scene without a second thought, but his scarlet queen spoke up, questions tumbling frantically off her tongue. Direction? He asked, for he was more concerned about tracking her down then learning details.

Wendigo

He wasn’t going to chance looking up again to see how his story was going over. Surely they would believe him, why would he have any reason to lie? It was like waiting on pins and needles holding this pathetic position but every regret swept away at a single hoarse word. Ah, so their pup had a name. Revon. This was followed up with a couple of questions and at this his heart soared; everything was going perfectly.

But he could still blow it all of he got too cocky and so his tail remained plastered to his belly and his ears tucked respectfully backwards. Licking his lips nervously he sputtered, ”Oh. No, not a pup. He was um - well white? Mostly white and a little grey. But um, he definitely had these kind of weird eyes. Grey. Spooky.” Wendigo knew exactly who the description described and hopefully this pair will know too. He had heard Rhamnus described the male leader from down the mountain enough times in her rants to know that’s who she would want to blame.

Still, he had more questions to answer. Ones he was more than happy to elaborate on, ”I don’t know where he was taking her but um. He smelled like a pack maybe?” Then standing a little so he could gesture over his shoulder back towards the path he had come on he continued, ”Uh that way. Down the path there.” Hopefully he had given Rhamnus enough time to cross a stream and double back across the mountain somewhere else. This would only work if they didn’t get caught.

He was white. White and a little grey. Spooky grey eyes.

His nose twitched at the description, his brows narrowing into a tight, thin line as he glanced over at his mate. There was only one wolf he knew that matched that description: Sven. But why would his nephew kidnap his daughter? If that was even what this was—a pup-napping. Greer knew that their packs weren’t on the best terms, and he wasn’t very fond of his pale nephew in general, but that didn’t warrant the silver Archer to steal the mountain princess from her home. A frown grew deep and heavy across his dark features, his tail slashing in frustration behind her. Sure? He asked through gritted teeth as he returned his icy gaze back to the dark stranger. He didn’t want to believe it, especially when it was coming from a mangy-looking loner, but the expression on his face looked believable. Greer just needed a little more convincing before he could take off to find his daughter and, hopefully, bring her home.
