With a gradually growing world available to her, Apolline had taken to adventuring more and more, enjoying some time away from the hustle of her many siblings as much as she enjoyed the new surroundings. They were a lively bunch, and with the big sisters to further stir them up, life in and around the den was rarely quiet. It got to much for a young girl to handle at times and she was very happy to be allowed to wander.
Today her little trip brought her to the mudhole, one of her favorite spots so far. Of course, the pup had no way of knowing that the basin was normally supposed to be filled with water, providing an easy source for the pack. She’d only ever known it as the mudhole. It was a deceptive spot, its surface long dried by the sun into a multitude of cracks. But if you dug down a bit, you’d find softer, wetter dirt – the mud she had named to spot after, being unaware of the proper term clay.
She had set to digging with great vigor, darkening her cinnamon fur with streaks of dirt, only to be rudely interrupted by a loud, scratchy cackle. Her head jerked up out of the hole she had dug, spinning around to locate the source of the noise. Then it sounded again, somewhere above. Apolline turned her head up, narrowing her eyes in an effort to sharpen the blurry branches. Another cackle brought her attention to a black and white splotch among the leaves, though she couldn’t figure out exactly what it was. Still, she knew it was laughing at her and she wasn’t about to take that without retaliation, baring her teeth and giving her very best, ferocious bark, challenging the blotch to come down and fight.
