She had been feeling cooped up for a while now. There were only so many ways to answer questions like ‘Why is the sky blue?’ and ‘Why is the rain wet?’ before her jaw was pulled taught and her shoulders were suddenly as hard as a rutting moose’s antlers. Usually she would have headed west, down into the Ghastly Woods, but the recent earthquake had left the path more treacherous than she could be bothered dealing with today and so she had travelled east instead, under the guise of scouting out prey - just to get some time to herself.

This place still left her hackles on edge. Now the snow had melted, it left in it’s wake ferns the colour of dried blood, and the trees towered overhead like silent sentinels, reaching down in places to snatch at her fur and scratch at her hide. She still couldn’t shake the image of the young broken girl, nor the fear that had lanced her heart when she thought for a moment that it could have been her own son. Perhaps she would have been better off enduring the pebble and boulder strewn path to the west. It wasn’t impassible by any means, but she would have to forge herself a new path and she had become a creature of habit. It had all seemed like too much effort at the time.

Tense as she was, her nose had been all but forgotten, otherwise she might have sensed the strangers approach far sooner than the cracking of a branch would indicate. Spinning about defensively with hackles raised and head lowered, golden eyes darted frantically between the trees as a growl of warning escaped her throat. Her heart was racing at a million miles a minute and adrenalin coursed through her veins as her body prepared to fight.
