you do not know who is your friend or who is your enemy until the ICE breaks. He wasn't sure what was going on. The other wolf seemed incredibly insecure and baffled, answering him politely enough but suddenly backing away. Ice's eyes narrowed, shining silver in the sunlight, and his head canted to one side. It was..dishonest behavior. It was the thing that set him on edge, made him go, what's up, what are you doing, what are you hiding?. "Go at peace," he replied gruffly, as much relieved as baffled: since when had any wolf had less social skill than Ice? Since when had any wolf been able to be so random? But the male was going, rather peacefully taking his exit, and Ice was left to stare at him. Until a new scent hit his sensitive nose. It smelled of meat, lots of meat, if a bit frozen. Turning his back on the retreating wolf Ice followed the scent on the wind, nose occasionally to the ground. Driven by his hunger, which the rabbit had done nothing but tease, he wasn't as alert as he should've been. He'd grown up in similar climate, though less mountainous—some things, weren't as deeply graven into his mind as they should be. The ledge he was following, across the red mountain-face, was not so much a ledge of stone as it was a ledge of hard-packed snow and ice, jutting out from among rocks and slowly, slowly reaching out over the steep slope below. It held beneath his large paws. But only for a while. All of a sudden, the morning sky spiraled above his head, eyes thrown up to that distant canvas of blue; his heart cried out even though his voice was silent, snow and ice and wolf free-falling along a red mountainside for a few, precious seconds. Then they all hit the slope, tumbled down, rolled over like dandelion by a playful wind. He wasn't sure what he was thinking of, in that moment—Marsh, Corinna, Triell, his sons, maybe even simple, mundane things like the sound of spring birds, the scent of summer grass, and the sight of stars. He hurt all over, but he couldn't stop on the slope, sliding and rolling further down the ravine, until all lights went out and the sun exploded. As Ice's head hit a rock, oblivion claimed him. .ice aesir |
