Naia Aegina

Naia’s ears flattened as Nineteen’s harsh question echoed from within the makeshift den. Although it was the reaction she had expected, the criticism left her feeling unsure of her decision to reveal Quick to her packmate. "She was a friend of mine before winter set in,” she explained hesitantly. Not so much a friend as an acquaintance really.. but even so, Naia did not want to see this wolf punished for a silly war that in her opinion should have been diplomatically resolved by now. ”She needs help, @Lachesis,” she pressed, using the name that the rest of the pack called him. Her voice was growing more desperate. ”You know what would happen if she was discovered here.” What was Nineteen first? Was he a healer first, or a Cut Rock River wolf? The answer would not only decide Quick’s fate, but Naia’s as well. The scout was in charge while their leaders were away.. she could order Lachesis to help Quick if it came down to it, but what would that mean for Naia later? Surely Lachesis would report the ‘betrayal’ to the leaders when they returned, and she would be cast from her home (if she was lucky).

No, she needed Nineteen to help this wolf, on his own accord. She felt guilty for cornering Nineteen into keeping this secret and becoming her co-conspirator—for asking him to choose between helping a packmate and a wolf in need or loyalty to Maksim’s declaration of war. What else could she do though? Leave Quick to her fate, collapsed at the border where any River wolf could find her? That went against every fiber of Naia’s being, and hopefully Nineteen’s as well seeing as he was a healer.

Karpos’s voice drifted from the depths of the den, asking about Quick by name. He didn’t seem angry—at least that was a good sign. The boy had been vehement in his derision of Hollowheart Keep upon his arrival, and Naia was worried he would be angry at the appearance of a Keep wolf. ”She needs help,” Naia answered at the same time that Quick said, ”A blizzard caught me.” Perhaps if she could win Karpos to her side, Nineteen would agree to help as well. Naia shivered, still standing in the exposed mouth of the den. She needed to get Quick inside. Soon. Naia feared that Quick didn’t have the strength to stand here for much longer, going back and forth with Karpos and Nineteen playing the “Why are you here” game.
