Since his little talk with Neko, The Black Cat, Kasai found himself wandering off on his own more and more. His siblings were fun, sure, but it was a guilty pleasure of his to have some time on his own... to be as imaginative and as loud as he wanted to be (without much chance of having, say, the whole pack come galloping over to make sure he was all right). By now, he had hoped that the adults knew better than to interrupt his "me" time. He was a cub for crying out loud! And, cubs were supposed to be rowdy and noisy and obnoxious. Otherwise, how else would they learn about the world, about what to do or what not to do?
The littlest Avalon saw the gray, still-cloudy afternoon as an opportunity to sneak away. There would be no naps and no quiet time for Kasai. All that stuff was for cubs as far as he was concerned and, in all truth, he was almost - almost - the size of his mother and that possibly said something about what he was capable of. Down the usual path leading to and away from the Oak Tree, he let his dark paws carry him along the river. It wasn't until he came to a stop that he finally thought to quench his thirst. Eager tail set in a contented wag, he found a spot where the waters grew still in the shallows and peered over the water's edge.
His reflection greeted him, a familiar sight of russet and black fur around a set of sun-bright eyes. He smirked at himself (as was usual for the conceited boy) but then - and Kasai could have sworn on his momma's life that it had actually happened - the boy mirrored back at him wink and snarled back!
Kasai's eyes widened as he brought his nose close to the water, staring into those yellow irises but finding that, even through the occasional ripple, his every move was matched inch for inch. He blew a raspberry at the boy in the pool, pink tongue lolling out as if his taunt would dare his reflection into trying another trick.
This could have been a chance for him to continue his little Red Hound story, but the boy was much too distracted, too focused on what had just happened. Someone should have seen it! He grew still, his tail straight at his back with his hackles high atop his shoulders and spine. Perhaps, this was a trick! He instantly thought back to Neko and what she had mentioned about that Witchbaby lady. Excitement took hold before fear could even seize him. He had to tell someone.
He risked taking his eyes off the submerged Kasai and tilted his head back in a characteristic howl, a note that rose and fell much like a coonhound's might in the wake of a genuine a-ha moment. 'Somebody! Quick! C'mere! Look!'
we can be blue as a neon light, singing them sad love songs all night
