Skoll should've been asleep but Niles had spent the morning trailing his path through the Scowle. This was deemed as unmistakably peculiar behavior until the Lyall figured it out. It went like this: someone in the pack smelled funny, Heat Season was still on the rise (this, Niles figured was due to the still-tempting scent that lingered in Mari's wake whenever they crossed paths), and his older brother was acting funny... Skoll did it. A beast of jealousy reared its ugly head in Niles' mind and the annoying itch - the one that had once flared up when he thought of Castel and their prospective future as parents - inched up along his spine. It made his muscles tense and it brought sensations that burned and tingled and rendered him all but restless.
As he deviated from Skoll's path, he wrinkled his nose. There was only one thing to do: scout around for something else to follow (and, recently, this often pointed to Mari and the persistent curiosity to find out what she was up to). He set his nose to the ground where the blades of marsh grasses had started their battles against the Spring chill. A few sniffs there, a few sniffs here, and nothing. His lips pursed and he ultimately decided to just walk.
He let his legs just carry him to the Lagoon, in a stroll by the thawing wetlands. If he found the silver-eyed woman, he found her. If he didn't, well, he was probably just going to try a little harder. Frankly, he liked being sour about the season with her...
we can say goodbye, just head home, but if we're going to be alone
