Mathéo Tainn
Open for one or two members of WRF.  Late afternoon, snowing.  6F.  Mathéo is at the borders, but not over.

In all reality, he should have returned home yesterday. After he'd found the wolf that turned out not to be Lavender at all, he should have made his way back to Driftwood Surge. Even if he couldn't have made it by nightfall, he'd have at least gotten there before midday.

Instead, he pushed further east. Aleksei had told him to look for him at Wild Rye Fields. Admittedly, it was much harder finding rye fields when all the plants (except the trees) were buried beneath the snow - snow that was still falling - but some tiny ember of curiosity burned somewhere in the young Tainn's heart. Risaela had gone back to this place. Maybe there was a good reason.

It was late in the afternoon by the time he found the marked borders. There were no other packs in the area. It sort of smelled the way he sort of remembered his brother to smell. Mathéo lifted his chin and sang out at the borders, hoping his brother would hear.

Keeping everything a little vague, fyi

It felt good to be back home finally after what felt like an eternity at in the deep snow outside the Rye borders. Having come back without her dark leader, Drestig, the Rye beta held a solemn demeanor as she felt guilty for not bringing back the patriarch. Perhaps if she had tried a little harder, ran faster, or was quicker to realize her leader had left the borders, Ade may of found him. However, she couldn't change anything now. She was back in the Rye, failing to bring him back and now it was uncertain if he was to return.

However, this didn't stop her from performing her duties as beta. Patrolling the borders seemed to keep her mind away from the negative, instead it kept her in a dulled, instinctive mindset. Sniff, mark, sniff, mark. It was a easy routine to get her mind off things, that was until a call rang through the breeze.

Approaching the border where the Surge pup stood patiently, her posture dominant, but otherwise friendly as this was an ally from Lachesis' pack. Mismatched eyes bright as a smile grazed her ebony lips, "Hello there! What brings you to the Rye?" She asked before letting her banner wave gently above her back, perhaps he brings news from Driftwood?

Not his brother, then.

A female. One that was kind of stinky, though at the moment, the stink didn't mean much at all to him. His tail give the tiniest of wiggles before dropping between his hocks, respectful. Being out here without word was probably enough breaking the rules for one adventure. And even then, it still gnawed at him in a way he couldn't really put a name on. "Uh, hello," he greeted the adult. An awkward shyness settled over him all at once. He barely noticed if the woman smelled weird, but was instead just overtaken by the idea that she was a stranger. He was on her turf.

Oh. He had regrets.

"I am Mathéo Tainn. My brother Aleksei told me to come here to see him. Is he…here?"

Sorry for the late response!
guardian dem 2/3

The Artemieva didn't really notice the awkwardness that fell over the boy, she kept a friendly smile upon her ebony lips as she waited for his response. Whatever it was, she was sure it was important enough to howl for the Rye wolves, so he had her attention. His name was enough to bring her smile brighter as she knew he was of higher importance to the Rye with sharing the surname of their alpha female. But as he mentioned a former member who happened to be his brother, her smile faltered a little.

"No, he isn't here and hasn't been for a few months." Ade told the boy, wishing she could tell him better news. "I'm sorry." She truly was. Missing family was never a good thing.

“Oh…”

He was too late, then. In a family full of those who left and those who were left behind…well. Theo supposed he wasn’t surprised. It still stung, though. His mouth wavered and he glanced back up, suddenly feeling guilty. “It’s not your fault,” he said softly, trying to placate the older wolf. After all, she could have hardly known. He had to doubt Aleksei had told anyone in his pack about Mathéo – Risaela had taken it about herself to visit. But not Theo, oh no. He was still trying to follow all the rules, then.

After a moment, he tried to shrug off his disappointment. “Did he say where he was going? Or if he’s coming back?”

Finally.. it only took me forever to get this up. <3

you do not know who is your friend

and who is your enemy

He felt simultaneously light and heavy; he was paper-thin, but too weak to easily move even that slight weight around. Still, angrily, he paced around, stubborn and brooding, helpless to fix anything. Drestig, who wasn't much better than Ice had been, was missing. The pack was down in numbers, and he was freeloading without a chance to pay them back, aside from getting off their property once he was strong enough to (though, the rebellious voice in his heart whispers, can I leave Jessie without knowing the fate of Drestig..?); he struggled, slowly, one paw at the time, moving his husk of a body around. Just skin and bones and a fire within.

He shouldn't be out and about, honestly, and he knew that, but he was capitalizing on the fact that most of the pack was else-wise occupied with worrying about Drestig. So, he wandered around, collapsing here and there and just breathing for many long minutes at a time, before getting up and continuing his stupid, pointless rounds. He'd be better served by staying put and letting all his precious food—and energy—go towards defeating the last vestiges of his illness, and rebuilding strength, not.. burning it on hapless wandering.. but he just couldn't stay put anymore.

Another howl, unfamiliar, rang out at the borders—it was relatively close to where Ice was, and it sounded very non-threatening. Besides, he was sure Adelayde was back and marking the borders, so likely he wasn't putting himself in any danger by limping over to them. Said and done, slowly and surely the gaunt, tall white wolf came upon Adelayde and the stranger. It was an almost-yearling, promising to be a tall but lanky male when done growing; his fur was fluffy and tawny and red, his eyes a bright green so painfully familiar Ice wondered if he was simply imagining it.

His tail gave a few bushy wags in greeting of Adelayde before dropping down, his head low because his neck simply couldn't hold it up properly; he watched them both in silence, flanks heaving, tongue lolling out, trying to catch his breath.

until the ice breaks.

The Artemieva wished she knew more about Aleksei's departure and whether or not the Baranski was coming back to the Lore. There were plenty that left the Rye and never came back, almost everyone that she could remember. Remington was the only one that she remembered coming back. Though she never rejoined the Rye. Her ocean eyes could easily see the disappointment that plagued the cub's face, but could also see the determination that tried to get rid of it. No he didn't say, but if he was from here and has family here, maybe there's a chance he'll be back?

Adelayde was a hopeful creature and always wished for the best, but sometimes one needed to learn to not keep their hopes on something that was so unpredictable. Her nostrils detected him before her eyes did and it didn't take the storm colored male long to reach them, her ocean eyes turning to him as he waved in greeting. Delicately, she touched the base of his ear in her own affectionate greeting for the older male. She would rather see him closer to center of the territory for his own safety, but Ade couldn't force him to. He was free to do as he pleased as a Rye guest.

Turning back towards Matheo, she introduced the newest member of the conversation. Matheo, this is Ice, a welcomed guest of the Rye. A smile passed her ebony lips, unbeknownst to her the relationship shared between the two males.

Mathéo Tainn

“Maybe.”

He did not say as much, but it was fairly evident in his tone that his own line of thought followed those running through Adelayde’s mind. He would not pin any hopes on Aleksei’s return. Would not pin his hopes on anyone, not really.

Idly, Theo wondered if he even had any hopes. What those were. Felt like, sounded like. He might have kept wondering, but a new wolf showed up, and the woman introduced him. Ice. Just Ice? He tipped his head to one side, ears flicked forward in interested. “Hello,” he said, ever the boy of dutiful manners. “My name is Mathéo Tainn, though you may call me Theo. It is very nice to meet you.” His tail gave a small wiggle. “I am from Hearth-- Driftwood Surge. A friend of the Rye is a friend of the Surge, I am sure.”

He'd slipped up, if only slightly. The Surge still felt very new in his mouth – but he would get used to it, with time. He always did. The world was not going to stop changing, after all.
