Enoki Archer
AW || RE: Enoki, a squirrel keeps interrupting your nap

This never ending heat was exhausting. For who knew how many days straight it seemed the willow forest was plagued by the unrelenting, scorching rays of sunlight that forced their way through the thinning canopy of the weeping timbers. Leaves that once held such vibrant and inviting shades of green now began to transform into deathly looking shades of brown. Leathery and smooth to the touch exchanged for crisp and shriveled appearances that snapped from their mothering branch with the slightest of touches in passing or coaxes from the warm breeze that rarely blew through. The ground below dusted in the decayed leafage and autumn was nowhere in sight yet.

Shade was a rare commodity it seemed, but the silvering magpie knew of some locations that offered relief to an extent from the soaring temperatures. Granted a day off from pup sitting the elderly female sought refuge against the trunk of the Ridge's oldest and most prominent tree, her body intertwined amongst the various exposed roots while her head lay upon the thickest rope she could find. Hopes of stealing a quick nap to escape the heat was her intended plan, but it seemed the local squirrels weren't happy about this large intruder on their turf.

All around her Enoki could hear the distinct chatter of the tree dwelling creatures. An occasional nut landing with a hard thumb awfully close to where she lay. Annoyed, a huff sounded from her nostrils. So the coyotes had no qualms with depleting their food sources, stealing what kills they did manage to make, encroaching on their territory, but for some reason they were suddenly too good to go after squirrels for a snack? Idiots. The whole lot of them. No wonder they never thrived before.

Ragnar Stormborn
Ragnar's curiously, as with any child, was endless. As he grew and those long legs of his reached out further his steps would take him further and further from the pack den. Though he mostly slept in with his three siblings he would still leave the pack den in the same manner the adults did, either on his own, with one of his siblings or to follow and adult and learn the ways of being a pack wolf - looking for food, scouting, searching for herbs, border patrol...

This day he had wondered to himself, branching off from Freyja towards a familiar scent of one of his packmates. It was Enoki. If she thought she was going to escape away from the children for a time she was wrong. He trailed her, doing his best to follow her scent. Everything was a game to him and yet improved his skills as he did so.

Soon the golden prince reached the borders of their pack and it is here where he paused with hesitation. He shouldn't leave. Avella had, once, though she had not gotten far. Beyond the border was more willow trees just like those in the pack, so why leave? He thought beyond all this there was more and one day he would conquer it, he knew, though not today. Still, Enoki had gone out on her own and with all the coyote about she wasn't really supposed to. He knew that too.

So he crossed over that invisible line. If she could do it, he could too. He could always say he was going with her for protection purposes, after all. They were supposed to stick together right? Bounding forward into a happy sprint, he lifted his nose to the winds and searched. Soon he would find her very noticeable black and white patched coating laying to rest under one of the various willow trees. He barks out to her in greeting, all smiles and a happy wag. "Ya know we're supposed to stick together." He spoke as he approached her, only to have a sudden large acorn fall before his paws, causing him to jump back in surprise. Pale blue eyes, paler now then they had been before, narrowed as they lifted to the tree. "Ugh, squarells.... I hate squarells..."

Enoki Archer
If there was anything that Enoki should have remembered when it came to raising children it was that you never truly got a break whether or not someone gave you the day off. Today was a firm confirmation of this as a sudden, youthful bark had silvered ears perking and her head lifting from its rested spot on the uprooted root, smoldering amber irises searching for the calls maker before settling on the golden silhouette of Ragnar while he metaphorically thumped her on the head with a reminder of the warning the pack sovereigns issued during the pack meeting. So he had managed to sneak away from her replacement for the day and inforce pack rules. The thought had a smug smirk adorning the corner of her lips. "You caught me." She confessed before another acorn bullet was shot from the canopy above and nearly made target practice out of the little one, smoldering gaze shifting upward to shoot a narrowed glare of her own in the squirrel's direction while offering a silent snarl. The chatter they made surging in volume. "Me too."

Little did the magpie know, though, that the launched acorn was actually meant for a pair of coyotes that had brazenly decided to follow the pup once he stepped paw outside the protective borders of the Ridge. And this was why the rule of leaving the borders in pairs was made. It wasn't until her gaze swung back toward Ragnar and motion behind him caught her eye that she became aware of their presence. One glance was all it took to ignite her maternal instincts into overdrive and have herself swiftly rising to her paws despite the protest her aging joints offered. The skin that covered her marred snout wrinkled in the form of a snarl as Enoki took a couple steps forward to hover over the child like a shield. "Stay behind me." She commanded the child, refusing to let her eyes leave the approaching coyotes that dared to bare their fangs as they continued to approach. She'd be damned if they thought they could touch a single golden hair on his head.

Ragnar Stormborn

He huffed, pale icy eyes remaining on the chatter rodents ahead in the treetop and he barks out, offering his most menacing snarl there after. But in seconds Enoki was on her feet, so quickly so despite her age that this too caught Ragnar off guard and he jumped back, body swinging around to where the adult was looking only to be met with the attention of two coyote. When did they get there??

"Squarells and coties? UGH." He didn't like either of them. Coyotes is why they had the ryle of sticking in pairs, why he hadn't been shown 'outside' yet, it's why his mother said it was harder to get things done for the pack because they had to watch out for the predators... "Shoulda stayed home..." He grumbled under his breath as Enoki moved in a protective stance over his body. Ragnar inched back, moving so that he was mostly behind her but his upper half still remained under her for comfort, the top of his head touching her warm stomach. He offers a silent snarl to mimic her own, his golden and blonde hairs standing on end.

Leotie Rhys
not looking for some fairytale bliss

With plenty of watchful eyes on the pups Leotie felt it okay to leave them. She had something else to attend to. She'd noticed Ragnar's scent trailing towards the border, this worried the mother. She followed his trail at a quickened pace hoping to catch up to him before he crossed. Avella had already ventured across she didn't want another pup doing the same.

The tawny woman soon caught sight of the blond fluff ahead of her so she kept him within sight. Soon enough she saw that he'd found Enoki and felt he'd be safe with the former alpha. She thought to head back but changed her mind and settled in next to a tree to watch over the pair.

It was a good thing she did, coyotes had found them and we're advancing fast. She was in her feet in an instant running to join them all snarls. She'd die before she'd let something happen to her pup or the piebald woman. Her tawny figure soon joined her son and friend in their defense.

Blackmoore Northcrest

The "falling" acorns were quite an annoyance to the male, yet despite the best efforts from the rodents above - the man had kept his mettle. For the most part that is, as initially they managed to coax out an annoyed growl from him on the beginning of his patrol. But it had been hours ago, and over this time the bushy squirrels seemed to have also loose some interest in wasting their time to throw some pinecones or acorns upon a creature that profoundly refused to give them satisfaction. Although i had to be said, that they got pretty close to breaking the dark male's "vows of silence". Fortunately the man prevailed, as he ventured off as usual quite some distance beyond the border of the willow ridge. Doing the usual tracking, inspecting prints left by strangers and most likely by the coyote pickets. Today like the days before, it seemed that everyone was doing their part of the dance - as the male came across a set of fresh tracks. The size of them, as well as fragrance that still lingered in places along the path had suggested to be exactly what the man had been looking for.

A coyote. A scout most likely.

The only divergence from normal was the presence of the second coyote, which he'd found not far from where the dark male had found the first prints. It seemed... unusual to say the least. But then perhaps he did enough of a good job to cause them to adapt the same rules as Sven and Ravenna did for the Willow Ridge? Maybe. Perhaps. But even if, it would be rather a team effort from everyone, not just him... Whatever the case would be though, the man had altered his route to follow the tracks. He even smiled briefly, as he welcomed the change from the usual boredom of having to deal with a solitary scouts. Scouts which would escape anyway, as they were too slippery for the towering male to even hope for a chance to catch one of them. But who knows what might happen today if there's two right?

Whatever his hopes for today would be, Blackmoore haven't envisioned nor expected involvement of anyone from the Ridge though. Which was probably foolish, considering a fairly recent affair with Sven's daughter that had ventured beyond the border just days ago. But as the old motto goes, that 'no plan survives the contact with the enemy' - neither did his expectations upon hearing the first growls from just ahead of himself. Not thinking much, the male had stepped up his pace - soon finding himself rushing towards the sounds on a reasonable pace considering his big frame.

It didn't took him long to catch up with the scene that had been unfolding in the shadows of a particularly old willow tree... The blood boiled in him with anger as he'd saw two coyotes closing in upon the figures in which he'd recognized the pack's Consul and Lead Scout. The first he had recognized instantly, thanks to the unmistakable pattern gracing her coat. As for Leotie, it haven't been the first time he'd came across Sven's mate, starting already on his first day in the pack when he'd got to defend the silvery amazon from unwanted advances of three coyotes that day... But as the man rushed in closer, his feverishly green eyes locked upon a third packmate that had made a fuzzy apperance from below the Consul. Right now Blackmoore couldn't tell was it Freya or Ragnar, but it didn't mattered either way. A pups presence had added a whole new sense of urgency to his trot however, as the male scurried towards the scene. A low growl coming from his maw, raising in volume as he came closer and closer to the elderly willow under which Leotie and Enoki made their stand.

With a raising amplitude of a freight train, it didn't took long for the two mongrels to notice him as they had been forced to look behind. Soon they had scurried with angry yelps as they had been forced to make way for the guardian that had stopped and turned sideways to have an eye for both the coyotes and the two ladies of the ridge that stood above Raganar (as it turned out to be, once the male had given the pup an neutral glance). With a gentle nod, the man had spoken a little apologetically. "I have came as soon as I'd heard the ruckus." His eyes jumped from the females towards the pup as he continued. "Is everyone all right?"

For now the coyotes kept their distance, waiting for them to give 'em a chance to do some damage...

Enoki Archer
The elderly woman had heard the muttered statement under his breath despite the rumbling of her snarl in her chest and..she couldn't believe she was about to think this..but she couldn't help but to agree with him. Had she; old enough to have known better than to disobey the rules put into place for the pack, obeyed the rules meant to prevent this exact situation Ragnar wouldn't have been put into danger and she wouldn't have to risk injuring herself granted the not exactly springy status of her body nowadays. Maybe she could have even gotten a good nap in elsewhere. Damn squirrels. This would be precarious at best.

At least they had a guardian angel watching over them. Within minutes of the situation escalating, a tawny figure manifested alongside Enoki's patchy frame with their own snarls filling the air in hopes of intimidating the coyotes into leaving them be. The magpie didn't dare remove her sights from the pair of 'yotes before them, but she was indeed thankful for Leotie's swift appearance and showed such with a brush of her shoulder against Leoties.

Now it was a standoff between the Ridge members and the yotes, both sides offering their most fierce snarls with little ground being made. That was until an ebony furry came charging from the exposed backsides of the coyote, his growls rumbling like thunder that only grew louder the closer he advanced. Right down the middle he charged and managed to split the pair up, but not without them issuing a few angry yelps as they lingered along the outskirts of the arena. For good measure the Consul snapped at one of the yotes to ensure they kept their distance that much more before daring to look away and nod in thanks to Blackmoore. "We’re okay. But I can't say the same for them in a moment." The skin cloaking her muzzle which had smoothed for a moment now wrinkled itself again the moment her smoldering gaze resettled upon the mangy beast.

Lord I suck. Sorry for the wait guys!

Ragnar felt safe here under the body of the patchy coated Consul and it was no wonder his own mother had taken such comfort in her when she had been a pup. When Leotie arrived and then even so quickly, did Blackmoore, Ragnar knew that there was little change the coyotes had against them. Two much smaller canines couldn't stand a chance against his 'other mother', 'grand mother' and a guard of the pack. "They dun stand a chance!" Ragnar spat out, his hairs along his spine raising and tail out stiff behind him. It wouldn't take much for them to run the coyotes off and maybe then they could take care of the squarell problem afterward so he and Enoki could go back to resting under the old willow tree.

not looking for some fairytale bliss

Leotie had never been one to back down from a situation and this was no different especially when Ragnar was there. She was thankful when Blackmoore showed up shortly after she had come in to the scene. The agouti woman didn't much like the idea of Enoki getting into a scrap eitb the coyotes. However, she had no doubt the order woman could hold her own if she had to. The piebald woman showed her appreciation with a brush of her shoulder against Leotie's own which was returned by a gentle bump to the older woman's muzzle.

There was only a moment for such things as her attention wasn't ever taken from the dogs. Once the dark figure of Blackmoore had charged the offensive beasts and split them up the two groups of canines fell into something of a holding pattern. She did smile when Ragnar's small voice piped up about the coyote's not standing a chance. “No, if they no what's good for them they will find someone else to harass.”

Her gaze never left the coyotes as she asked, “Any of you got a plan?” She expected that Blackmoore might as it seemed to he his specialty, he was a guardian for a reason after all.
