Inactive II. Subordinate
Cancer
rank challenge for @Deacon, spectators welcome but will be skipped if needed. c: takes place in the forested part of wrf.

Something had changed in him since that talk with @Risaela, as though a loose gear had shifted and clicked into place, sparking life back into parts of him that before had laid dormant. It was clear why: for the first time in far too long, he wasn't just Cancer, stumbling along and trying but ultimately alone. He was part of a family, and it didn't matter if that only included the two of them. It was more than himself and his baggage, something new and promising, and dammit, this time, he wasn't going to fuck it up.

Part of that meant being a relation Risaela could be proud of, where before he just settled for not totally embarrassing her. Cancer moved with a bit of purpose now, held his head a bit higher. He wanted his role back, maybe even something more than a hunter. And when it came to passing Deacon by, well...

He didn't know much about the other man, other than his girlfriend had taken off and left their kid with him, or something like that. He'd been with the Rye wolves longer though, naturally held a place higher up on the hierarchy than Cancer for this reason alone, and so the blue eyed wolf had always kept his head down around him. Now, though? Did the misplaced Archer have any ambition in him, anything to strive for other than his daughter's survival? The man was in front of him now, minding his own, but something visceral within Cancer urged him to test that strenuous divisor between them.

Maybe he was better suited a little higher up on the ladder. If not? At least he would know something more about this man than him being just another body in this pack. Either would be helpful in integrating Cancer further into this pack.

Cancer pointedly raised his head and tail both, blue eyes locked upon Deacon's amber as he walked. The other wolf could tolerate this display and cede to the scruffy male being the more dominant creature between them, or assert himself.

Deacon
S for some swears.

Maybe he hadn't been the most social creature but he was caring for a child by himself. He was still learning how to balance a pack life and his own family life after the departure of Lekalta. She had had a reason but as the days kept ticking it kept slipping away from him. Ever agreeing to let her go do her thing seemed stupid now. He had expected a swifter return. Bitterness built up in him.

It was with that bitterness that he found someone to push it onto. This swanky little blue-eyed kid. Needless to say the boy rubbed him horribly wrong holding that posture. Deacon sharply raised his head, tail and hackles. His chest puffed out a bit as he fiercely eyed down the younger male. The look on Deacon's face was clear for any to read. "What the fuck do you think you're doing?"

The boy better explain himself fast or the older Rye wolf would have no problem reminding him who was higher ranked here.

have you checked out my player preferences?

Cancer

Deacon did not take Cancer's little instigation lying down, quickly reacting with body language which commanded the younger wolf to stand down. This was not insubordination though, for once the young man wasn't just here to run his mouth and scram when things got too heated, too real. There was purpose behind his motions, and that fueled him on even as the small, damaged whelp that still lived deep inside of him trembled in the face of the anger of a grown and powerful male.

Cancer wouldn't spell it out, but hopefully it would become clear that this was only a tussle over dominance, not an actual challenge to Deacon's worth as a wolf or a question of what he contributed to the pack. Other than his and his daughter's existence, looks and names, Cancer really knew next to nothing about them. There had to be plenty he was doing right for wolves like Jessie and Laike to allow his stay, however. He might've even been tied in like Ris was to the old Tainn, precious to someone other than his progeny.

As it was, this was not about Deacon being wrong for his rank, but rather about Cancer yearning to be more fit for it.

His tongue ran across his teeth as his muzzle crinkled with a silent snarl, posture raising even higher to show wordlessly that he was not backing down. Instinct guided his actions as he drew closer to the other wolf, jaws striking to muzzle grab Deacon and force his head lower.
