Why didn't they answer what Iopah had thought were clearly querys? Koda's voice started back up. Iopah recognized the disjointed yelps and barks that signaled the end of the song, but she gazed out into the forest for a moment. She was still perturbed, probably more so by the refusal to answer than the unknown identity. A tawny ear twitched to the male, distracted by his song. She couldn't let him sing alone, it was against wolf instinct and the very image made her twist in guilt.
She turned to find he was much closer than expected. Suddenly they were nearly nose to nose. Instead of uncertainty or surprise she was filled with elation. Her tail wagged without her awareness behind her. The closeness was welcomed and Iopah bumped her nose gently against his chin to illustrate it. The stranger was practically forgotten as Iopah pressed her side into his to start her own wavering series of yips and half-howls. Without even knowing why, it felt so very right to do this with him.
They had ceased being mere acquaintances months ago. Even the term 'friend' didn't apply anymore, they were partners, accepting and trusting each other implicitly. But as the days and weeks went by they were headed towards something more than mere work partners. Iopah yawned widely, finally feeling sleep creep up on her. Shifting quietly under the silent sky she curled up on the soft-swept grass, watching contentedly as Koda did the same.
