This night, the stars flickered wildly in the infinite, dark sky. The black male traveled steadily, propelled by emotion and persistence. In his blood-stained mouth he carried the reward of a long day of work: a juicy, stiff reward. His body ached and he was nearly exhausted, but the memories of his day in the field replayed over and over in his mind as he treaded relentlessly through the unforgiven terrain that would lead home.

Silver eyes were empty and cold, like his insides felt at the moment, but as he encroached upon a newly familiar, pleasant sight and smell - the fog. He was almost there, perhaps a few miles, but dawn would come soon, as the horizon began to glow from the rising sun. The distance from the thicket and fields to his den had been challenging, but as the morning came he returned to the cove and his hole in the hill, where he readily spit out the heavy mouthfull that had made every muscle in his head and neck agonizingly discomfortable.

His paws bled as he crossed the pebbled beach and entered the lake's waters, which was so cold that it chilled his burning body and throbbing legs. As he lapped the water gratefully, flashes of her crystalline eyes crossed his mind, and he thought fondly of his interaction with the ghostly female who had came and gone so swiftly, like a sweet dream.

Sweet dreams sounded like they were just what he needed, and the male retreated to his hole, bringing his leftovers to bed with him for safekeeping. As he pawed the den floor until it was just right before plopping down effortlessly. Hopefully he would be able to rest in the safety of his hole throughout the afternoon, with the sound of the shade trees swaying like a lulliby in the gentle breeze that seemed most perpetual. The fog began to lift just as he drifted into a peaceful slumber, tucked away in the foot of the hill.

Evening seemed to cause a strange shift in Volkan's spirit. As a myriad stars rested gently overhead, set in a black tapestry, the static-colored female set out Eastward from Swift River with a million things on her mind. Ruiko's words from their meeting some time ago echoed in her mind as her large paws carried her swiftly and precisely uphill through the forest: "Wanderlust gets the better of them."

Wanderlust. It was a word she had come to resent only because it hit the nail so hard on the head; wanderlust was exactly right. Volkan knew she was no endemic wolf. Unlike many others, she found lounging around pack territories all day to be a sure recipe for boredom. And since the pack meeting, her confidence in her new position among Swift River's ranks had made her just comfortable enough to take some time for herself. After all, the whole joining process had been very daunting. Between submitting to Marsh, being put on the spot at the meeting and being examined by Corinna, being claimed protectively by Ruiko, and being looked at apologetically by Triell, Volkan was beginning to feel a little like a piece of meat, being tugged around by the ever-deserving jaws of her new pack. Of course, it was nothing she hadn't expected. She just hadn't expected it to be so draining.

Soon the trees opened, and Volkan stopped at the top of a ridge overlooking a lake. "—Sweet," she commented to the crickets chirping around her, beginning her descent down to the water. It was a breathtakingly beautiful place. The smell was so fresh here... but one scent on the wind stood out distinctly, causing the mottled yearling to stop in her tracks. Meat. And a wolf. The combination overwhelming to her curiosity, Volk lowered her nose to the ground, bent on following the trail to find whoever this was and their recent kill.

Without much trouble it led her to what looked like a dwelling, and whoever it was was inside. Slowly, she inched forward, poking her nose, then her head inside into the darkness, the smell of the kill overwhelming. A thought flashed inside her mind; briefly she pictured the pups smiling and playfully tumbling over one another, fighting for the meat Volkan had brought them... what better way to please Swift River than to bring them an easy meal? She remained quiet, bracing herself for the movement of the wolf in the darkness. He was bound to notice her standing there.

Although he was worn down from his day with Jayse, the night was discomforting, and he found that the slumber he had expected to enjoy only seemed to come and go. After waking to a strange scent after his first night in the novel den, Kade couldn't help but to sleep with one eye open, so to speak. He shifted his weight, sighing deeply as he glanced at the decaying remnants that were his only reminder that his dreamy day with the white female was real. His train of thought was interrupted; his ears swiveled, head perking up in alarm, at the sight of an unknown wolf literally standing only a side from him - too close.

The black male came to his feet in a split second, and a low, menacing growl came from deep inside his body. His heavy musculature anchored him to the damp den floor, and he would waste no time in defending his kill. His cold, silver eyes were piercing as they met the gaze of the stranger who had so foolishly been looking for a quick meal. He was eager to see just how this situation would unfold, set beneath the sparkling, black expanse of night sky that cloaked the wilderness in darkness.

Volkan saw the eyes first. Catching the moonlight, they stared back at her as though she was looking in a dark mirror. The growl came with it, and the young female jumped back, head tilting in amusement as her own low rumble of a growl broke into laughter. He was not happy, was he? Instinctively her claws rooted her to the ground as she stood a few wolf's lengths away from him, limbs spread wide in case he suddenly came hurtling toward her. A sardonic grin framed her canines.

"C'mon," she teased in a low voice, "It's just sitting there anyway." Of course she knew he wasn't going to surrender it without a fight, or at least some sort of argument— but secretly, she hoped for the former. On this dark night she just felt like causing trouble, even if it meant a few scrapes and bruises. To be honest, she didn't feel quite right without them. She wanted to get roughed up, thrown around, to just fight like she hadn't done since the days of the Aquila Clan— and if she won some meat for the Swift River guys while she was at it, or even if she didn't, her spirit would thank her for it.

Lowering her stance, the static-colored wolf leered at him, icy gaze daring him to make a move. Her ragged tail twitched behind her anxiously, ears flattening to her skull. Her words came as an invitation. "I'll fight you for it."

The male stepped backward into the black of the den, where the moonlight did not reach to reveal his eyes, and closer to the rotting chunk of flesh that was responsible for the encounter. "Come and get it," was his reply to female, whose midnight annoyance was taxing the little patience he did have. He hoped she was inexperienced enough to try him; maybe he should just throw the nealy day old kill to her so she could bring it to her pack, whose members' scents were faintly intertwined with hers. Beside, there's nothing like a long day of hard work, scavaging for old meat instead of taking the initiatve to exhibit one's own skill in the act. He laughed to himself at the thought, waiting for her to take her best shot.

His response both pleased her and stoked the fire swelling in her chest. Immediately she began to assume the defensive posture that had been etched into her brain from the time she was knee-height; she took a few steps back, settling into a well-practiced defensive posture, limbs splayed with claws grasping for the soft ground beneath them. The grass felt cool, and the breeze gave her chills as adrenaline began to race through her veins, her top lip curling in a menacing grin. She thought she could hear the stranger laughing— or perhaps she was just imagining it, but it provoked a volatile growl in her throat. WIth her tail tucked against her back leg and her ears against her head in case he went for one of them, she peered into the relative darkness with narrowed eyes.

Shifting her weight, she warmed up her limbs, and her growl stopped. Almost snakelike, she cocked her head, her grin having morphed into a determined frown. "No fair," she teased quietly in a mock whine, her low voice rocky with nerves. "Come into the light." Coward. She didn't say it; name-calling wouldn't get them anywhere. She wanted to see what this male was made of, what wolves in Relic Lore were capable of doing on their own. Moreover, she needed to test her own skills. If there was at least a chance of having to face Rhysis some day, there was no way in hell he was going to find her rusty.

With bated breath she waited for her opponent to show himself, at the same time anticipating him to come flying out of the darkness toward her. If or when that happened, the game would be on.

He smirked at her predictable reply. Come into the light? Really? She must be afraid of the dark, or something. The black and silver male almost didn't know how to react; here was a stranger, a female, alone, looking for trouble and a fight, unable to make a move? Too cautious to take what she apparently thought was her? Her defensive posturing wasn't going to get her anywhere, perhaps she should take on an offensive posture, but that would involve her bringing this "fight" of hers inside the confines of the den walls, where an escape would be nearly impossible. She certainly didn't have the heart for that, a deduction evidenced by her lazy reactions.

Untelling eyes analyzed her every move as he remained still, mind flashing back and forth to the meat behind him. It wasn't even worth defending. He could surrender it to her so she could move on, picking fights she couldn't initiate along the way. Boring. The tension that gripped his body was beginning to wane as the adrenaline seemed to come and go with each second that drug by awkwardly.

The midnight fog was thickening, and the eerie landscape was mottled with shadow and moonlight. A gentle breeze rolled through the cove, permeating the timeless atmosphere with the inviting smell of distant rain that called for him... Tick tock.

Though Volkan didn't abandon her defenses, her racing heart began to subside as she waited... and waited. The young wolf rolled her eyes. Seriously? What was his deal— was he really expecting her to just throw herself into the darkness of a random den, a setting to which the stranger's eyes were no doubt already adjusted? She may have been young and reckless, but she wasn't stupid. Either this guy was biding his time, waiting for the right moment to strike and actually defend his kill like a wolf and not some weasel waiting for danger to pass, or he was trying to coax her in there. Whatever it was, he was doing a good deal of agitating her, as Volkan was not the most patient of wolves.

"Hellooo," She called. After a short pause, she added, "I'm not coming in there. You should probably grow a pair and come fight me. What're you scared of?" To Volkan, there was no reason not to fight, no reason why this stranger would just camp in his little cave. If all wolves in Relic Lore were this lame, she was going to have a hard time holding on to her sanity. Waiting still, she remained in her position, a single brow lifting as she wondered whether or not her words had provoked him enough, honest though they had been.

Although this meeting between Kade and the unknown female was becoming increasingly less threatening as the seconds passed, he could not help but to admire her irritating, dogged persistence. Of course, he thought to himself sarcastically. At this point, he could be sure that the only fear he had was that if he didn't go after her she may never stop nagging at him, and he cringed at the sound of her mischievous voice as it echoed softly in the small darkness of the hole in the hill.

His ears began to twitch, tiring from being plastered flat to his broad head, as he emerged from his "little cave." Silver eyes glared into hers, locked on, from behind a shadowy brow, as he moved closer to her. The way the moonlight fell illuminated the silver in her coat, which was actually beautifully mottled - unlike her shining personality - and he took note of this peripherally. "Blah, blah, blah..." The words were like a manifestation of the irritation in the back of his mind - monotonous - but they were the only ones worth wasting breath on.

And now here they were, so close that he could hear her shallow heart beating, just what she wanted, minus the fight she was expecting to encounter. It didn't take long to size her up: small body, light weight, big mouth. No doubt that the most dangerous part about the stranger was that she was relentless in her nagging and battlemongering. It was really kind of cute, and it lightened the mood, for him atleast. She was so hell bent on getting a rise out of him that he wasn't really sure which emotional response was most appropriate: the initial sense of a threat, the varying degrees of annoyance, or the latter tickle of humor.

The male's carriage was low as he approached her invitingly. She wouldn't require much provocation, and now he was in her reach...

Merrr. This turned out unexpectedly, sorry to cut the thread short, but I realized that this would be the most realistic course of action for my poor anxiety-ridden girl ._.

She had time only to see the dark fur, pale eyes, and his height— somewhat taller than her— before her own ghostly eyes became the size of stars. Her jaw slack, she gasped, heart threatening to burst from her chest, lungs struggling for uneven breaths. No— not now—

Her nightmare had become reality. Rhysis couldn't be here— he couldn't be here—

Dark spots began to cloud her vision as her eyes glazed over, paws carrying her in careless, slow, bewildered backward steps. Her tail was between her legs, and she slowly shook her head, staring at him incredulously, breaths having become quick and sharp; she had to run, had to get out of here—

"Rhy..." she stammered, absolutely startled by the large tree root that tripped her as she attempted to disappear, to get out. "No, Rhy— Rhys—"

But her instincts and adrenaline gave her mind no time to think, and Volkan sprinted away like lightning into the darkness, crashing blindly through the brush until the following morning...
