Random Event #1

The paths of the Mountain of Dire are few and far between, so the young buck did not have long to wait before he was discovered. This was not a typical kill; there are no signs of the buck having been hunted. Illness doesn't seem to be the answer either. Could this be the start of an epidemic...?

This is an All Welcome thread. You may react to this however you think your character would.

Sojourn Ranger Aquila
Ranger was not usually one to <span class='word'>beek</span>, to sit idly around and let the sun warm her body. She was a mover, a doer, and yet today she had taken some time to simply lie in the sun. It had been comfortable, especially with the warmth soaking into her dark fur, but after about an hour of it she had grown bored. She was not an idle wolf; she was a hunter, a warrior, and a wanderer. She wanted to explore. As she sat up, her eyes drifted across the valley, wondering where she should go that day.

The mountains to the east looked promising, and although she was not surefooted on the rocky terrain, her desire to explore that area won over her hesitation. Ranger picked up her pace and headed toward the Mountains of Dire, as she had heard them called. It was a foreboding name, but Ranger was not afraid of some mountains and rocks. It was just land, like Blackberry Fields or Bramble Falls. It took her most of the morning to get there, as she had been hanging out on the edge of Blackberry Fields and Wild Cherry Orchard. But up ahead, on the path that she was traveling, there was a felled deer.

Immediately Ranger's pace slowed and her heart quickened. Her eyes and ears were alert for any sight or sound, and her nose was working furiously to find any hint of another wolf around. Was this an ambush? The dark warrior approached the deer slowly, cautiously, and when she got to its side she saw something stranger. What she <i>didn't</i> see was the strange part. There was no blood, no marks of any kind on his young, tawny body. He was in his youth, not past adulthood, with small antlers atop his small head. Frowning, Ranger sniffed at him gingerly, wondering what might have caused him to die so suddenly.

Roach
<blockquote>The skeletal wraith that was the creature Roach was not accustomed nor prepared for the treacherous climb through the mountains, and fared poorly under the steep and harsh conditions. His mood could only grow nastier as he found himself stuck in the wretched place, doomed to navigate a labyrinth of uneven ground and thin air. As was usual for the lanky beast, his gut writhed and cramped in hunger, the everlasting desire to feast being the only thing driving him forward. That was all he seemed to do in this land - lurk about like a ghost, his only goals to feed and keep living in his miserable, pathetic existence. It was a waste of resources really that he did absolutely <i>nothing</i> else, but that lack of social interaction and aspirations could always change.. for the worse.

A scent drifted in the wind and pulled him in like an irresistible gravitational force, so strong that the creeping, crawling sack of bones actually began to scamper in its direction. It was the only scent he ever took the time to chase after, the one he attached himself to and LOOKED desperately for at any given point in time, the only one he noticed: the scent of death. A rotting carcass, a charred corpse, a fresh kill - they all were of utmost interest to Roach, for scavenging was how he survived. An the opportunity to take a free meal (he was a miserable hunter after all) was too good to resist, so why start now? He loped in toward the odor, inhaling itlike a drug, drooling with just the thought of sinking his teeth into his next meal.

Roach almost burst from the shadows onto the scene, but instinct stopped him for a second. He hesitated and ventured out into the open cautiously, his pulsing, pale eyes falling first upon the buck corpse, and then on the wolf next to it. An immediate hissing stirred in his throat, elevating to a gurgling growl as he stared at her. The pain caused by having his potential next meal already being claimed caused a livid wrath to build up in him, and without thinking began to stalk forward, itching to sate the hunger pangs. He didn't even think to notice the strange manner with which the buck had perished - completely unharmed - only realizing that this was something he couldn't and didn't <i>want</i> to pass up. And, oddly, he was well prepared to fight for it.</blockquote>

Sojourn Ranger Aquila
The wolf that stepped from the shadows opposite her and the deer was skeletally thin, wraith-like, with an eerie air of death about him. Ranger didn't know what to think of him, but as soon as he began to stalk toward her, growls and snarls thrown toward her, she stepped over the deer and lowered her head. Her teeth flashed back at him, and it was considerably more formidable than the other's. Ranger was huge for a female, taller than most males and stronger, too. She might be a bit willowy in places -- like her legs -- but that did not mean she was weak. She towered over the deer and waited for the fight to start. Their goal were very different, though; the male wanted food, and Ranger wanted to keep him from eating something that had died for no apparent reason.

<b>"You don't want to eat this,"</b> she said through a warning growl. <b>"It died, I don't know how, but there's no blood. It might make you sick."</b> Her words were simple interjections and <span class='word'>anacoluthia</span>; it didn't make much sense, but she had tried to get her meaning across quickly and efficiently. Now that her meaning was given, she could speak more freely. <b>"There is no blood, don't you see that? I don't want to eat it, but I will fight to keep you from taking it. It could kill you. There might be a disease."</b> She wasn't entirely sure about these things, but if he was going to fight her, she would fight back. She didn't want anybody to eat this deer until they figured out how he had died. If more animals began dying without any visible reason, she'd leave as quickly as she had arrived.

Weldering Darksidy
The smell of blood and death was not in the air so it surprised Weldering to look down from the slopes of the Dire Mountain and see the buck laying limp on it's side, dead. With two wolves gathered to it's side it appeared as though a kill had been made, but without harming the creature? This alone was enough curiosity to question the two rogues present, maybe find out how they managed such a feat. Cautiously not idly wishing to disturb the strangers he worked his way around the trail approaching them to hear the last few words exchanged to one another.

'There is no blood, don't you see that? I don't want to eat it, but I will fight to keep you from taking it. It could kill you. There might be a disease.' Ranger was speaking yet making no sense and anacoluthia. These were not kind or faithful words spoken in order to protect this other wolf it was blind greed! They were all lone wolves after all. Black lips curled back revealing sharp and deadly ivory fangs while rolling his shoulder blades forwards to step lightly forwards in a prowl. Weldering moved beside Roach just as prepared to fight for the kill now but only to help Roach - if having a small share of the meal came as a by-product then that would be just dandy. <b style="color:#0d5b8c; font-family:geogia; font-size:13px">"You speak the words of a lone wolf with a full stomach." Weldering sneered, this darker side of him with no patience was a rarity but he believed with all honesty that Ranger was the one in the wrong. <b style="color:#0d5b8c; font-family:geogia; font-size:13px">"Making up lies so that we leave so you can eat it alone. If you do not want to eat it then why fight for it? Go away."

Roach
<blockquote>Her words were a drone to him, barely comprehensible and nothing but an irritating buzz in the back of his head. He did not dwell on them or consider them at all, merely imitated the swatting away of a mosquito (quite metaphorical to his perception of her speech as well) by the flick of an ear, which then pinned against his skull so that they were buried in frazzled fur. He did a great job of completely ignoring the warning, though perhaps that show of deliberate ignorance was merely a reflection of his primal and untamed disposition. Instead of coming to his senses and considering her argument, his broken snarls only grew louder, and his shaky, queasy body lurched protest. Roach was a pathetic thing, standing their all sunken and skinny, all his remaining fur (no longer silver, but dull gray and dirty) standing straight up as if he struck by lightning.

One of Ranger's spoken statements did spark a flash of recognition that he registered and responded to appropriately. Her mentioning of his apparent doom and damnation upon consumption of the mysterious carcass was a laughing matter to him - if he ever took the time to laugh. He scoffed suddenly, breaking off his uneasy livid stature to open his bloody lips and speak for the first time it what was obviously a long time, <b><span style='color:#878a41'>"World could kill me!"</span></b> he spat, saliva dribbling and spewing from his narrow muzzle, his wild eyes only growing darker as the seconds passed. His voice was rough and high-pitched, ethereal even - a clear indicator of his sickness. It was whiny and uneducated, it was slurred and had no soothing rhythm. It was just as broken and gross as his body was. <b><span style='color:#878a41'>"Eating means living. Not means death. You kill me?"</span></b>

His <span class='word'>anacoluthia</span> actually seemed appropriate to his character, but that didn't make it any less difficult to understand him. It almost seemed like half his thoughts and speech remained in his head, while the rest was blurted out on a whim. What he basically had meant to say was that not eating would kill him just as easily if not more quickly than eating a diseased deer would, and was asking if Ranger would willingly send him to his death.

Hesitation consumed him again as another masculine animal came up to actually reinforce Roach. He did consider this (though deaf to the wolf's words) and relief somewhat spread over him. He did not plan to pass up the opportunity of a free meal anyway, regardless of the bitch that stood in his way, but having a beast to back him up was only that much more thrilling. Maybe he wouldn't get his ass handed to him this time around? None of this consideration would dare come close to Roach actually appreciating Weldering's interruption, but that would become apparent later on.

Two against one - Ha!</blockquote>

Sojourn Ranger Aquila
<i> Well I'm lucky! :D <3 </i>

Ranger had in her past life had no qualms in killing another wolf. She still had no qualms about it, honestly, but it seemed unfair of her to kill something that so obviously wished to die. She did not believe in suicide and therefore was a bit reluctant to harm this skeletal creature, no matter her convictions in keeping him from eating the diseased deer. His voice was rough and guttural when he finally spoke, his words garbled <span class='word'>anacoluthia</span> to her. She was able to discern his meaning, though, and she shook her head. <b>"No, I won't kill you. You shouldn't eat this deer. It has died, but we can't see why. Isn't that something to consider?"</b>

The warm sun beat down upon her, and as she hadn't had much to drink today, she felt a bit dehydrated. She licked her lips and prayed that she wouldn't have to fight this guy. When another wolf showed up, another loner like the other guy and herself, Ranger was almost excited to have someone to back her up. But it became apparent very quickly that he was too hungry to see reason. She snarled at him, too, her gold eyes piercing into his gaze, willing him to see reason. <b>"Are you both so stupid? I was here first and had every opportunity to drag this deer away. As I'm a better hunter than both of you, though, I've already eaten today. Why would I keep you from eating this deer if it was healthy?"</b> She shook her head and spoke deeply, her voice deep for a woman's, especially as she was now getting angry. <b>"I don't want it,"</b> she said firmly, her eyes roaming from wolf to wolf. <b>"But if you eat it, you might die."</b>

Weldering Darksidy
Although Weldering had yet to make a kill he had no qualms with it either, it was what he had trained to do in his previous pack. He would not kill without a justifiable reason but the silver and black brute certainly was prepared to defend himself and right now defend his small stake of claim on the carcass. Oh he was willing to share, there was enough for all three of them but what he would not put up with was arguing over the rights of who it belonged too. Ranger had not killed it herself so technically whether she arrived here first or last Weldering did not see it as her property. Especially not now that she had said she had no intention of eating the fallen buck. Screw her, just because she was not hungry did not mean that Roach and himself had to starve.

So what if they did not know how the Buck died, it could have died of perfectly natural causes, it could have fallen off a ledge and hurt himself with injuries not visible to the eye or suffered head injuries from the previous rut. Even if the buck had fallen sick, maybe died of pneumonia or some kind of flue every wolf had strong natural immunities and infections and diseases like that were not spread by eating the victim of it. <b style="color:#0d5b8c; font-family:geogia; font-size:13px">"There's more chance of me getting struck by lightning then dieing from eating this." He scoffed, the arrogance pouring from his lips which for him was a huge abnormality. He was tense, under pressure and feeling awkward and right now Ranger was the one making him feel this way and so the quicker she left the better he would feel.

His bright twilight blue eyes glanced across towards the other male at his side, he was glad to see that other male was tolerating this alliance. Soot coloured ears twitching as he listened and also made out the scrambled words feeling a general sense of bilocation with what had been said. But he pieced it together and was reminded by a similar wolf he'd met called Marsh who also struggled to get his words out in the right order. It was now however getting to the point where his reason was beginning to calm him down. While his hackles remained bristled and body still fully alert and poised ready for action he scuttled closer to the corpse of the buck defiantly.

'As I'm a better hunter than both of you, though, I've already eaten today.' Weldering sneered, blackened ears folding back aggressively towards the she-wolf. <b style="color:#0d5b8c; font-family:geogia; font-size:13px">"You know nothing about either of us." He hissed, it was in fact true that he was a hopeless hunter and that he relied more on fishing but he was not about to applaud her for some wild stab in the dark accusation. There was no need to start randomly throwing insults into this argument... how typically female he huffed as he thought to himself. 'Why would I keep you from eating this deer if it was healthy?' <b style="color:#0d5b8c; font-family:geogia; font-size:13px">"Who's to say you don't want to eat it?" He quickly retorted back, though this heated debate was going in circles and he'd had enough. <b style="color:#0d5b8c; font-family:geogia; font-size:13px">"You?" Weldering scoffed. Now standing directly in front of the fallen buck he reached out while still holding his defenses in place aiming to grasp the nearest part of the creature and yank it back between himself and Roach. All the time keeping his icy blue gaze on the she-wolf Ranger. he did not trust her one bit.

Ruiko Tainn
It was a strange occurrence that the tawny male happened upon the gathered wolves. While bilocation was impossible, and he wished to stay close to the pack lands since Indru’s disappearance, the hefty male had opted to travel to the mountains in hopes that his uncle might have insight on the matter. After all, perhaps Indru had said something to him. As his paws lead him up the slopes of the large land, his ears twitched at the sound of insistent voices.. and perhaps anger? Normally, the River wolf would have been more than content to keep on his way and ignore the event.. but it was a flash of dark fur tipped with silver that spurred the frown upon his stoical features.

And so Ruiko moved forward, his large figure moving up beside that of the she-wolf he had met prior. His sharp yellow eyes regarded both the males before him; both he recognized, only one he had conversed with. A flick of his tail was the only sign of his amusement to this fight, and his eyes fell upon the subject of the matter. The two male’s stood fiercely above the deceased animal; one that looked young and capable. Ranger’s words were not entirely untrue.. and yet, who could blame two lone wolves desiring such a feast; large prey was impossible to catch when alone. “Let them have it,” he murmured darkly, amusement cast in his voice. “If they drop dead from disease then it’s two less wolves hunting prey this winter.”

Sojourn Ranger Aquila
<i> Lol, I know it's not my turn, but I had to reply. XD </i>

Ranger growled fiercely when the silver male came forward and snapped at her. Ranger swatted her paw at him to get away from her and the deceased deer, though he was rather insistent in getting to the food. Ruiko, however, joined her side almost immediately after her somewhat lame attempt at protecting herself. If it came down to it, honestly, she'd probably just let them have it. Ranger wasn't going to get herself killed for the sake of reason.

Ruiko's words, though not exactly what she wanted to hear, were logical enough. She nodded and back-pedaled away from the deer, stepping over it carefully. She stood by Ruiko's side, hackles raised, while she tried to get her mind out of fight mode. She breathed calmly, watching as the deer got farther from her as she stepped backward some more. <b>"Have it,"</b> she spat, venom in her words. She turned toward Ruiko and nodded, her eyes resting on his chest.

She nudged his chin in recognition of his superiority, and quite unexpectedly a flash of electricity went through her body. Hiding it with all the stoicism of a trained warrior, she turned her gold eyes back to the others.
