The sky was still a deep inky blue, dotted with small white lights as she made her way to the place where she had first really connected with her pale cloaked friend. She had a long way to go to make it up to the smaller wolf, for all the pain she had caused, and the turmoil she had now thrust upon the woman. It was not a position she envied.

Even in the dark, Athena’s place loomed in front of her. The boulder where she expected the woman would soon arrive to watch the sun rise. Her scent still laid here thickly. Her eyes roved to the smaller boulder she had once settled herself on as they watched together, but now she contained herself to the ground, where the lowest belonged.

She had come here once again to let it all go. She wanted that feeling again. The sense of freedom she had felt on that morning, freedom from the guilt of fleeing the River, freedom from the past, only focusing on the future.

Once again she found herself here, ready to purge herself of the pain. She was no longer the leader here. Bad things had happened to make it so, but holding onto the anger only caused her soul to fester. The rage she felt against her brother, against the Creek wolves, it was all for naught. What would causing them the same pain she had been caused do but potentially spark another threat of war? With winter fast approaching and three children to protect, was that really something she wanted to consider?

No.

Already the sky was lightening as her thoughts continued to drift, releasing each little hurt onto the small breeze that blew her way. Her leader would be here soon, and if she chose to chase her away then Naira would go. Already she was feeling lighter, but there was still so much more pain that she needed to work through before she could begin to build her life again.

Perhaps it was her state of mind or she wasn’t in the right place. With this in mind, she sought out her favorite place – her boulder atop of one of the many cliff edges of the looming mountain. Many didn’t know where she always went in the mornings and evenings, besides perhaps Tlarx and her ex-leaders. But, she would like to keep it that way. It was one of the few places she found peace among the chaotic nature of her life.

As she made her way towards her hidden sanctuary, her mind wandered back to the night with Tlarx at the lake shore. She had been so desperate and unaware of her overpowering depression then, but now she was slowly recovering. Everything had come crashing down on her way too fast while she was still trying to recover from everything beforehand. It had all just been too much for her to handle at one time, but time had a way of fixing things. The Leader was now stronger, wiser, and better than she was before. Nothing was going to pull her down like that again.

The boulder emerged up ahead, but that wasn’t the only thing there today. Another was lying beside it on the ground, almost as if they were either waiting for her or just waiting for the sunrise. She kept walking, curious to whom it was. Testing the air, she confirmed it was a poisoned wolf, but it wasn’t who she was expecting. It was Naira. Her forward movement stopped as she paused to collect her thoughts before proceeding forward once again. The white woman made the small leap up on her spot settling in before turning towards Naira. Her fiery eyes taking in the older woman that she had once trusted with all her heart, now all that was gone. Perhaps in time she’d be able to trust the tawny woman completely again, but time can only tell.

Her eyes had settled on the point of the horizon where the sky began to change colour. She could almost see them as her thoughts were fed to the rapidly rising ball of fire. The way she had been dragged out in the middle of the night, her howls, unheard through the rolling thunder. The way her brother had thrown her son aside like some pinecone he had grown tired of carting around… all drifted out of her heart and onto the back of the winds of change. But there were things she couldn’t let go of yet - her rage of missing out on so much. Her babies first steps from the den, the first time the wind called to Bella, moulding Datura’s strong personality into something less destructive, Adonis’s innocence, Lilly… She couldn’t bring herself to let go of that. Not yet. Not knowing where Rhysis had gone, or why… Questions still burned into her mind.

Still she felt raw, fresh, new. But not in the way she had expected.

Steady pawsteps approached behind her. She half closed her eyes and breathed. There was a moments hesitance, but she didn’t allow herself to tense. Again they resumed and she felt rather than saw or heard the white lady move up beside her and onto the boulder at her flank. She could feel the fiery eyes resting on her, but she didn’t let the gaze burn through her pelt, rather it felt like a radiating questioning warmth down her back.

So she wouldn’t be run off. Well that was fortunate.

She still struggled to comprehend why she had been relegated to the lowest rank. She hadn’t left by choice. It hadn’t been her job to patrol the borders that night, or any night for weeks before. Her place had been in the den, with her young. She had only done as any mother would have. She didn’t force the mountain to fall behind her. She wasn’t the one who had given up searching so easily. She tried to release her frustration and anger onto the breeze, but some of it just would not go. It seemed as if each strand she released ignited another fire of rage in her soul. Perhaps this was a pointless task...

Her expression remained blank, almost peaceful in stark contrast to the inferno that raged within. She stared through half closed eyes as the sun bathed the earth in blood.

An omen perhaps?
