RE: There is a full moon. A surprise thread for {Fenru}

The way the moonlight reflected off the water's mirror-surface lit her face with an icy blue shade, and she watched as the iridescence danced along the angles just below her eyes. Rarely was there a night as breathtaking as this to be found. Though much of winter's snow had faded away, thin, jagged sheets of ice hung around the lagoon's shore. Some of the trees were blooming early, and their branches were dotted with clusters of tiny buds that were really invisible in the dark. It was strange - to see the world half-dead and half-alive - but something about the way mother nature had crafted such a sight was truly magical.

The long fur down her back rustled in a breeze that swept her reflection away in little waves, each sparkling as though the water was made of diamonds, and she reached a paw out to bat the surface. A quiet sigh escaped Luce's lips. It was still cold enough to deter her ache to take a swim. Soon enough, however, she knew that this sleepy spring would become a searing summer, and that when the wind blew warmer there would be an opportunity for her here.

She didn't know what Phineas' plans were, only that they would be leaving soon. Somewhere over the mountains, which loomed far in the distance, was her new home, and its mystery to her deepened with each passing day. Wouldn't she be happy? Will it be as beautiful there as she found this place to be? Somewhere in time, she knew that her aspirations would be fulfilled so long as she was patient. She held few expectations, not because she was pessimistic, but because surprises suited her best.

Rising to her feet, the alabaster girl shook the damp feel from her coat, raising her gaze to the orange moon as she basked in the hope it emanated tonight.

This really was a surprise! Had a long day at work and this was superduperpleasant to discover. Thankies in advance. <3

For so many nights he aimlessly wandered, so many mornings observed and several afternoons and evenings wasted... thinking. The facts were simple and they all led to one veritable truth. Fenru Tainn should not have been here. Corinna had told him to go, and she had guilted him into staying home, but still the boy had stolen away into the night wrought with wild emotions and the utter disappointment of how poorly he still behaved in the face of dire situations. He was a wolf, nothing more and nothing less, yet he acted as though something much tamer than the instincts that reigned over him. And, on that train of thought, down, down, and down he went, thrashing about westbound through the Lore without a second thought.

Spring had come finally and with it, his winter pelt had started to shed, making the lean and slightly wiry frame that had become his adult build underneath show. In the soft moonlight, the patches of ivory and silver shone in stark contrast to the darker colors on his coat; but, he was neither worried nor concerned about it. Others who were nearby, predator or prey alike, would hear him coming before they could even pick him out between the trunks of the trees. With every other heavy step it seemed something was disturbed: a twig snapped, his hardened paw pads and claws scraped down the side of a small rock, leaves rustled, blades of grass swayed against one another in a telltale swooshing sound that told of his passing.

It wasn't until he realized that he had come upon the sight of a still body of water did he stop. Warm orange eyes, rendered a cold and pale gray in the moonshine, fell to his paws as he lifted one to sniff the cold mud that now caked the bottom of it. He frowned and shook his head, placing it back down with a crisp squishing sound before looking over the lagoon. His nose twitched and he next thing he knew he was stepping towards the water's edge and craning his neck downward so he could lap at the glasslike surface.

The icy water quenched the thirst he had been ignoring for a better part of day and it seemed for a time that he felt like he could not stop drinking. He did though, and the reason why came in the form of someone emerging from the water. Fenru licked the droplets of water from his maw, standing up straight as he took in the ripples that tried to reach him where he stood. He tried to sample the air for traces of her scent, forced his eardrums to listen for her voice in the still air. She shook out her glowing cream-colored coat and he watched in awe.

In a series of memories, of things that were once forgotten now newly recalled, he reeled upon remembered how far he had gone from his family's territory. Where there should have been a cautionary warning or courteous salutation, Fenru, still Swift River's youngest {male} Guard, said the first word that came to his mind, "Arlette?!"

I'm glad I could brighten your long day with thread-love <33

Altogether, she had been so immersed in her thoughts and the hypnotism of the water that she hadn't picked up on the fact that she were not alone anymore. For a short time she would enjoy the presence of the moon as it hung over her, studying its shadows and craters and the pale halo that glowed along its round edge. The few soft clouds that accompanied it were a shade of blue she'd only ever noticed in the sky, during day or night, each with a silver lining that accentuated the cotton look of their layers. She wondered if there was a wind up there like the one that graced the surface of the water now, and if the clouds rode along it as if being swept by some heavenly river.

A voice broke through the quiet, then, a call from across the way. Her head snapped in its direction. Along the muddy bank of the cove opposite her stood an unfamiliar figure, shrouded in the same silver light that lined the clouds, and from here the silver look of his eyes glimmered. For a moment she was as still as the water had been. A single, ash-tipped ear swung sideways and forward again as she made sense of the words - or word, rather. A name? She was no Arlette, though the pretty ring to it tinkled in her ears.

She was caught off guard by the stranger's arrival, unsuspecting, and now no less curious. From her place, on the muddy shore much like the man himself, she looked him over. Tall, broad, and with dark features made darker by the contrasting lighter shades of his legs and underbelly. There was an expression of surprise and what she interpreted to be a glint of excitement on his face, and though she didn't know him and in fact had never encountered him before, a tinge of guilt pulsed through her at the thought of not being who he may have thought she was. She hated to be a cause of disappointment.

"I-I, uhm..." she could have choked. "...N-no, I'm not," her voice was velvet-soft as she broke it to him. Her golden eyes were wild as they stole across the lagoon, connected with his as she held her breath, frozen.

As he had expected she looked at him, really looked at him and the boy saw the shock flicker across her face. His tail wagged but slowly stopped in midair as she informed him that she was not Arlette Lyall of Grizzly Hollow. "Oh," he muttered, hoping she wouldn't pick up the note of disappointment in his tone. He mustered up a smile but it did not stay on his face and he continued to gaze upon her still interested nevertheless.

Truth be told, Fenru had not seen many white wolves - Arlette, Ice, Cali, and his Aunt Borlla were the only three he had ever laid eyes on - and the sudden the idea of him never finding or seeing the younger of three women he had only chance meetings with tore at his mind. It had never occurred to him until now that Relic Lore was much larger than he had initially imagined. To even think that his pack and family were only a few among several, maybe even a couple hundred, others made his head spin.

He lifted a large paw, slowly placing it down in step as he turned to look at her fully. The distinct features that made her her had yet to be seen, but for the time being he eyed her quietly, unsure how to go about learning more about her if she found him suitable company to keep. "Who are you then?" he questioned rather eagerly, his voice curling up on the last word. "I-if it's okay to ask..."

The disappointment she'd feared accompanied his reply, and a most subtle whine caught in her throat. She didn't like to be the bearer of bad news. To Luce's surprise, however, the stranger hadn't lost interest in her for not being someone else, and instead proceeded to ask who she was. Immediately she perked up, a modest smile lighting her features. There was an allure in the polite way he'd spoken that she found inviting, and she was equally eager to oblige him.

"Lucero," she eyed him with a sway of her tail, "...but, you can call me Luce." Taking a single, tentative step toward him so as to be as inviting as he seemed, the girl never lifted her gaze. Ever so slightly she turned her head, growing quiet as she peered across the water. There was a gentility to the way she went about it, and she quickly had to gulp down the strange, silly wave of heat that washed over her.

She was a shy thing. Despite the good distance that separated the two of them, something about being face-to-face with the unfamiliar was terrifying. Yet, on a night like this, with the moon and the stars to light her world and the handsome face of a friendly presence, Luce wasn't so afraid.

"What's your name?"

Lucero. Luce. "Luce," he tested her name on his tongue and through his teeth, ultimately smiling as he placed it to memory. "I'm Fenru," he answered her, a more becoming smile placing itself on his masked features. His tail wagged as he watched her take a step forward. Phew! At least she didn't seem to find him intimidating. Then again, he realized that distance might have shrunk his large physique into a more approachable dimension.

She also seemed genuinely interested in meeting him, even if she gazed across the water and avoided his gaze. The boy took the opportunity to sneak a little closer. One step, two steps... three, four... Then one more large step and he was a stone's throw away from her. His eyes narrowed as he looked across the Lagoon after her line of sight. Nothing specifically jumped out at him, visually, but when he slowly turned to look upon her once more he realized that she did not carry the distinct scent of cedars as strongly as Arlette had.

He could feel himself growing bashful, his muscles tensing apprehensively as he took in her elegant features and the way the moon's glow actually seemed to make her seem luminescent as well. The more he ogled at her the more he realized what was different between Luce and the girl from the Hollow. He wasn't able to discern as much as he initially wanted though (he had noticed that she had a 'saddle' marking of sorts on her back and a bit of gray shading on her face), the fact that she was peering across the water had him suddenly baffled. "Umm," he fumbled with his words, nervously chuckling two airy notes in turn. "What're... What are you looking at over there?"

The way Luce's name slipped from his mouth made her feel increasingly weightless. It was then that the girl would expressly meet his gaze, the pressure in her chest dissolving. "I'm Fenru." It wasn't the name she'd imagined would belong to a wolf as burly and masculine as he, but considering the gentle tone of his words and the charisma that saturated his strides as he moved in closer to her, she realized it fit him perfectly. The intensity of her curiosity deepened as she watched his every step. Soon enough Fenru stood but a short distance from her, quiet replacing the squishing of his pad falls into the mud, and it was then that she found herself not only weightless, but breathless.

"What're... What are you looking at over there?"

The silvery haze of his eyes from afar was replaced by a smoldering, deep shade of orange, so hot that her own canary-yellow gaze melted right into it. She was unaware of the breath that slipped from her lips as she roved their enticing depths, made more vibrant by the dark mask he wore so well. If before she was hesitant to look upon him, now she couldn't look away. Luce knew now was the time to convey her gratitude for his polite introduction, but she fumbled her words before they'd ever left her mouth. Instead she allowed a charming, girlish smile to light her face as the surprise that was Fenru had so subtly lit her mood. She stepped closer to him, drifting effortlessly to his side before looking back across the water in the same direction as he. Leaning her head a hair closer to his as if to align her line of sight to see from his perspective, she whispered. "Just wait, Fenru..."

In the distance there seemed to be nothing special or amiss, just a dewy, sandy bank where the blades of grass twinkled in the silver moonlight. The same gentle waves that had earlier captured her attention lapped lazily upon the shore, and only the tympany of an easy, spring breeze through the branches behind the young pair and the sloshing of the lagoon at their feet could be heard. Several seconds had passed without anything, and she felt a lump of embarrassment begin to settle in her throat. Just when it appeared as though Luce was the fool, a tiny flash of golden light sparked in the distance, its reflection dancing on the water's surface before disappearing. And then another, and a few seconds later another.

A glint of excitement coursed through her veins, and she looked up at Fenru's profile with quiet delight, the shine of her warm eyes brighter than the fireflies could have ever hoped to be. "Look," she beamed, her ivory plume swaying slowly behind her, "...we're not the only ones who think the night is worth staying up for."

He trained his eyes on the water again as she drew closer, leveling her head with his. Both of them for a time seemed to be scanning the scenery for something. But what? He wasn't so sure until she told him to wait. His nose twitched, patiently wondering what she was about to show him or do to him. For a second he tried to talk himself into believing she was messing with his head until something small lit up over the water, its reflection making it seem like there were two pinpricks of light.

Fenru was sure she was looking at him, maybe even staring as another small flash of light lit up in another location apart from where he had seen the first one. She told him to look and ever so slowly he began to notice them. Here, there, over the water, and even seemingly high enough to look as though they could kiss the moon from where he stood. Lights. Little things that were like stars, blinking and twinkling against the backdrop of night.

Though he had been initially wonderstruck, a smile played on his lips. Never in his whole life had he ever seen anything like this. Whatever they were, it was obviously apparent he had never seen them in the Grove, not even even on the mountain or on the other side of it where his sister now laid in peace. "Wow," he breathed, turning his head in small degrees to just watch a small light flicker out only to glow again in another place nearby. "What are they?"

The look of wonderment evident on Fenru's face made her happy. It wasn't just that he'd never seen the lightning bugs before, but the fact that she was there to share the moment with him. Or he with her. Something about their lighthearted encounter struck her as being rare. It wasn't every day that one could enjoy something so simple with a complete stranger who enjoyed it, too, and it was as this notion crossed her mind that she watched him take in the first sparks of tiny light.

"They're fireflies, Fenru," she replied. That was about all she knew about them, beside the fact that she liked the way the made the night feel warmer. "Want to get a closer look?" As if to assume that he would she made her move. The long, ivory tips of the fur of her shoulder brushed against his as she shifted from his side, stepping through the mud as nimbly as possible, which to her dismay still felt rather sloppy. Adventure shone in her bright eyes as she looked over her shoulder. "Come on!"

It really wasn't far to the other side, and this end of the lagoon was rather narrow. The dewy smell of the air filled her lungs, and she took notice to the fact that their destination seemed a bit dark considering the moon hung above in full effect. A patch of cattails obstructed her view, which she proceeded to part with her snout, and as their path ended what she saw next stole her heart away. There were so many of them, each flash of light like a shooting star before it faded, replaced by the spark of another. The small, sequestered cove that she hadn't noticed from afar was lined on three sides by trees, their branches extended to hang over the water. In several places the moonlight filtered through their canopy, capering along the mossy bank and dark water. Opposite where the lagoon ended and the nook began, the forest was thick, deep, and dark.

In a pitch of excitement she swung her head to look back and convey her dire amazement to the boy, but her words caught on the tip of her tongue and she stiffened as something landed on the tip of her nose. Wide-eyed as she was cross-eyed, Luce looked down her muzzle at the single firefly whose golden blaze illuminated the surprise on her face.

I'm sorry I'm not sorry.

"They're fireflies, Fenru," she supplied him with an equally mind-boggling answer. Fire, he knew from family lore, was one thing, and flies, from personal experience, were another. But, fire-flies? Whoa. He glanced to her as she asked whether or not he wanted to get a closer look. Regardless of if he actually wanted to or not, Luce proceeded in going ahead to investigate. "Come on!" she shouted to him.

He obeyed, his tail high as it wagged about, sending the fireflies that came too close spiraling in the opposite direction. She had just disappeared behind a curtain of cattails when he arrived at the obstacle. "Luce?" he called after her, slowly parting the tall plants with his muzzle just as she had. "Lucero?" She seemed to have become awful quiet on the other side and was starting to think he had to come to her rescue. Don't worry, I'm coming! his mind cried, his cumbersome frame awkwardly navigating him through the small patch of flowering plants on the water's edge.

By the time his head managed to break free from between the slender blades, he saw her turn back to look at him. She was fine... Perfectly fine. He breathed a soft sigh of relief and another grin curled the corners of his mouth upward, especially now that he noticed how rather silly and winsome she looked when a firefly landed on the tip of her nose. He snickered lightly as fought to keep his balance, tottering forward to fully emerge into the openness of the weir. "You, um," he lifted a forepaw slowly, partially gesturing to point at his own nose. "Ya got a... uh... there."

"Here," he edged closer to her, tilting his muzzle downward just slightly as if to threaten the glowing bug with the proximity of his nose. It just... didn't seem like it felt threatened! As much as he wanted to just blow at it, huff and puff with all his might in hopes that it find some other place to land, he held his breath, and in trying to nudge it off of her, bumped his nose lightly into hers. As the pesky insect hovered up and away, Fenru took a half-step back in embarrassment. "Oopsorry!"
