there's so many things we're not
but with what we have
i promise you that we're marchin' on

The yearling's gaze went from Ice to Jessie to Tali then back to Ice once more, trying to see if he could comprehend the emotions on each face. Something told him that Jessie wasn't buying the truth he had tendered and his burnt sienna ears lowered considerably as her gaze went back to Tali. Ice? the gleam in his eyes pleaded as his orange-rimmed pupils went to the Swift River Leader worriedly. Had Tali done something wrong? Fenru wished he had known beforehand aside from being questioned why she hadn't followed him home from the Willows.

In attempt to spare Jessie some of the stress he had provoked, he eased himself into a seated position, dropping his torso a few inches by bending his elbows so that in turn he was lower that her in height. He had no reason to lie to her, to them, and he hoped she understood that. Though he didn't mean to stare, let alone continually gander, at his superiors, he averted his gaze before looking to Tali as Ice tended to the Hunter's apprehensiveness.

He tried to smile and at least silently assure her that no harm had been done. His tail jerked about a few more times before growing still and resting on the ground behind him. When he turned to look at Ice, he had his nose at Jessie's ear, and the young man had to, again, turn away, not wanting to encroach on their brief exchange while she was appeased.

She looked to Ice for only a second before focusing back on the ground in front of her paws. The air around the group was thick with mixed emotions. In Tali's case there was hope, and fear. She wasn't positive about the others but she was sure doubt was a big one. It was almost as if a dark cloud was following the group who stood in front of her. Something had happened to them, but she wasn't sure what. Maybe their last loner had turned on them? Just one more detail, churning around in her head without an answer. She hoped she would be around these wolves long enough to find out.

Tali felt eyes digging into her. It was strong enough to make her fur prickle, and she looked up. Her caramel eyes jumped from one wolf to the next finally landing on the paws of the only other female there. The female's posture made her tail stiffen. The tension around them heightened, and she felt as if she might need to escape. Overriding this sensation, she stayed right where she was. She would not be run off just yet. Everything was silent as she watched the wolf's hair flatten back down. Though she couldn't be sure what passing thought made the black and white wolf react like that, she knew she was going to have to really prove herself to that female.

She caught the look given to her by Ice. It was one that told her he would address her as soon as his fellow pack member felt better about the situation. It was an admirable quality to find in a leader. He wanted to qualm everyone's doubts before voicing his decision. She stayed patient, ears directed toward the conversation happening between the leader and the female.

At the corner of her eye, she could see Fenru shrinking down to the point of him being lower than her. On her face, a tight line was drawn, trying to make her gaze reassuring but surely failing at whatever she was trying to accomplish. The touch to her head and incoming words from Ice caused a sharp intake of breath to come from her. It was not too loud, but she was sure Ice would have heard it. Turning her gaze towards his icy blue eyes, she breathed in deeply, before letting her words pour into his ear, just loud enough for only him to hear, "Just...thinking of Hotei…I don’t want another disappointment within the pack." She then let her jade eyes travel to seek out the face of the loner, only to find her staring at the two of them, her ears pricked towards him. To that, she let her eyes take on a steely glare and she trotted back to stand before Fenru, touching his shoulder in comfort for her previous actions. Ice had already made his decision and he already knew that.

Flicking her tail slightly, she rooted herself next to the yearling, her gaze traveling down to look at him, eyes cold and void of her emotions. She had not even bothered knowing how he viewed this woman in front of them, but obviously if he recommended her to the pack and she had come to them then maybe…Jessie could give the woman some space. Or at least…stay away from her completely unless it was absolutely necessary for her to help her out or converse with her. She would not let this pack mate get close to her as she had the last. Jessie knew she could count on the wolves within Swift River…the ones that had been within the pack before she had even joined. While all the others proved useless and traitorous, things that she knew the pack did not value and loathed. Would this woman prove herself to them or just be another disappointment to them all?

It was as he expected; her voice a quiet murmur washing against his ear, a worry well-founded. Truly, it was a pity they had come to this, and the last time he'd forced this decision upon them, the female in question had left them, again. Once, Ice had been the one to drive them all away, the pack's heart too tender from the beating Indru gave it time and again, and the possibility of someone just leaving.. it would've been too painful. Now, though - stabler, older, it was a risk he knew they had to take every once in a while. You kind of learned to not expect too much in the long run, and not form any real attachments until they'd proven they were here to stay. How long had it taken Cali to really earn his respect, and trust? A damn long time; Jessie had needed a few months too, yet here they stood... She pulled away again, his pink tongue flapping out after her retreating nose, and he watched her for a moment as she went to stand by the half-slouched Fenru.

Family. Ice's gaze went to Brenton, then back to Tali. It was a trust he would give her, that she would handle his family carefully and not hurt them, yet too many did hurt them.. and thus, the mess they were today. His tail gave a twitch and rose, stiffened, and with the pose of a leader he closed the space between them. For a moment he let his eyes bore down against hers, then he lowered his head to grab her muzzle in his jaws; his teeth would rest against the fragile bones, establishing his place as the one in command, before releasing her and giving her nose a lick. "We do not forgive those who leave us," he whispered quietly to her, his mouth hanging by her ears. "And in return, we fiercely love those who stay with us." Then he nudged her shoulder, encouraging her to stand a liiiiiittle straighter.. so he could brush their fur together and mark her as a wolf of the River.

Tali Callow
The sun was beginning to fall on the horizon, no longer warming her back. It's absence left a chill, which crept through her pelt. Tali looked to Ice, allowing his eyes access. Her body laid still, the only movement coming from her tail which was still planted under her stomach. She didn't move as his jaws clamped on her own. There was no pain, but she understood the white alpha's message. This was his territory, these wolves were his family, and he was the alpha. She felt him let go of her muzzle and lick her nose. She accepted his gesture gratefully, moving to lick his chin. When he spoke, there was passion, and emotion. "We do not forgive those who leave us," She nodded, signalling that she understood this. There would be no leaving this pack and being re accepted. "And in return, we fiercely love those who stay with us." This statement sent fire through her veins. She felt the nudge on her shoulder and she stood just a slight bit higher, making sure she kept herself lower than Ice.

Her eyes looked toward the territory that she would soon walk upon as her own. She would finally have a stable family. The life that every wold was supposed to live. She jut hoped that in time, she would be able to prover her worth. One day they wouldn't look at her with suspicious eyes, and she longed for that day. Until then, she would do whatever she had to in order to gain there trust. She just didn't want to disappoint.

Only when it seemed like it was okay to look back at the group did Fenru risk a glimpse at Ice's face. The ivory Leader watched as Jessie made his way toward him, and the boy attempted to give her smile when she nudged his shoulder. It was not returned though, and his face fell as he, in turn, took in her face. He had to question himself as to whether or not he knew why she reacted in such a way, but in a mere second, it was painfully clear... She, too, had endured loss; and, with such a close-knit family, it occurred to him that might have been much harder for her to accept Tali as a River wolf. He took another deep breath and sighed, retaining his position at Jessie's side as he looked on through the Grove, merely listening as Ice moved forward and marked her as one of the pack.

Once more, he tried another smile, his gaze finding the relief on Tali's face as she took in the territory that she would call home. As he found it disrespectful to make his leave before Ice and Jessie - the two higher-ranking wolves he adored and admired beyond measure - he waited to be dismissed, firmly settled on the ground beneath him. Being "rooted to the spot" while he waited 'til it was all right to continue on his patrol didn't stop his tail from wagging though, and he let out a deep, thrilled chirp, something that was supposedly in-between a bark and a warbled howl... a sound that was sort of like a congratulatory whoop after the daily darg had been done.

The comforting lick given to her by Ice eased some of her tension in the slightest bit, relieved that he would accept her words in such a graceful manner and perhaps even understand them. The small smile that was given to her by Fenru reassured her that everything was okay now and that they were family. The soon to be man had made quite an impression on their trip to the other side of the mountains. He had not intentions of giving up when they had left and had stuck with them the whole time, loyalty never wavering from their task. She had grown use to his presence and would not mind getting to know him better in the future. She watched and listened as Ice performed the sacred performance of accepting another within the ranks. When all was over and done with, she watched them draw back and Tali stand slightly taller, and Jessie quickly made sure that she was dominating her subordinate. Quickly glancing towards Brenton she looked away, ready to get on her way.

Nudging the large man beneath her to his feet, she muttered softly, "Come on, Fen. Let’s finish on that patrol." She then let her petite body lead the way along the Swift River border lines. It took some time, but she did not mind the silence. Family silences were supposed to be comfortable, right? She whisked along though, getting the job done quickly…even though it was not normally her job to do, she still did a border run every once and while. So with a sigh, she continued on, her mind wandering other places as she finished. It would be soon that the Swift River pack would have a new future ahead of them, one they would (hopefully) all look forward to.

She rose beneath his nudge, her smaller frame rising a little off the ground. A grim kind of half-amused smile spread across his face. Once, that had been him, slouched before Indru, and then later when he met Corinna the first time - ah, what a long way he had come since then.. how much heavier and darker his heart seemed. An absentminded, quiet grunt left his lungs as he angled his head aside, brushing his white flank against hers; adding Swift River to her, and Tali to himself. Soon enough the smell of the area would settle in in her fur, and he expected to smell her tracks here and there in the future.. not just going, and not coming back, but staying. They needed more constants.

Unwilling to tire their ears off with a battology he kept his mouth shut. He'd said what needed to be said; Jessie seemed easier about it, and Tali had surely understood his not-so-subtle warning that she was supposed to stick around. Stepping aside from her he stretched, briefly, lowering first his chest and then his hind end to pull out the muscles in his back. It seemed that Jessie was taking Fenru for a walk, and Ice trailed his nose against them as they went, before settling his silver eyes on Tali. "C'mon," he muttered, indicating she should tag along, before he, too, set out to patrol the other direction.
