Aideen Smoke

It was warmer. Maybe not much, not quite enough to crack through the heavy layer of snow, but definitely warmer! The sun had just enough power to be felt, a light caress against thick fur, a faint kiss of spring. The red-pelted girl was resting on a large rock by the creek, catching a brief breath in the hectic fight for survival, and enjoying to mild sun, it's rays making her pelt shine like blazing embers. The afternoon was slowly creeping in, and she knew she would soon have to get up again, back to patrolling endlessly for any sign of food.

A great sigh escaped her white muzzle as she forced open copper-brown eyes, gazing longingly at the water, a light trickle that had managed to break through the ice, with help from the gentle sun; This is nice... She mused lazily, ears waving absently in the faint breeze, the best thing about this spot was the relative shelter from any winds, a quiet nook in the depths of the forest. Sighing again, the shewolf rolled over, exposing her opposite flank to the tender rays, thoughts trailing off even as she tried to convince herself to stand up; I always did love the sun...

Where she grew up, farther north, the bright circle nearly never had any warmth to give, it's rays almost cold as they reflected off the ice. Once a year, Around this time, actually... The sun would completely disappear, staying below the horizon for days on end. A faint stab of homesickness went through the young woman's heart, as she remembered her first solstice, how she and her brothers had tried to stay up until the sun rose once more, ending up fainting from exhaustion, one by one. I won..! A melancholic smile creased her lips, she'd been fighting to keep her eyes open, even as Bero - the strongest of her brothers - gave in; her mother had scolded them, like she always did, moaning about how ridiculous it all was...

With yet another sigh, the tricolored wolfess finally pushed herself into a seating position, yawning widely; I need to get going... And yet she stayed in place, watching the light reflecting of the running water, splitting into tiny rainbows, she didn't want this tiny breath of peace to end, even if her heart was heavy with longing for her family.

Sorry about the long post, couldn’t help myself XD
@Aideen

The gentle sun that managed to sift through the thick thicket barely warmed his back, but it was enough for him to see clearly without stepping on thorns – most of them – and walking into the brush where sharp, thin sticks would poke him painfully. It would take some time getting used to the thicket where he now lived, but he had time, time to rest, learn, find out secrets, and throw everything back in the pack members’ faces. They didn’t deserve his loyalty, and he would not give it, even though they thought he did. He was loyal only to himself, no one else could be trusted fully, even an ally, or his sister.

Padding slowly through the winding thicket – at a slow, stretched out trot to be precise – The Young Hellion constantly looked around for anything, or anyone that might be a danger to his welfare. But there was nothing except for a white thicket surrounding him from all angles; covered with snow and thorns littered everywhere. When he came to the edge of the thicket, Anouke paused for a few minutes, closing his eyes and letting the cool sun wash over him – what was seen of the sun as there was only a sliver peeking out from behind the clouds.

Sighing softly, he turned around and headed back into the thicket - so he wouldn’t have to face a loner who would beg to join, to wander around aimlessly, possibly find a pack member to exchange pointless words to. Was that what he would be forced to do until winter was over, so he wouldn’t be kicked out into the snow and left to starve? No, he could make his own fun, the way he used to, but just toned down enough so that if he was caught he could explain himself without being immediately dismissed. Yes, that was what he would do.

It was a few minutes of seeing nothing but the thicket and hearing soft chatters and squawks from the animals around him until Anouke saw a small figure next to some ice, which with help from the weak sun, had become a small trickle of water. On a closer inspection, he could see that the figure was clearly a wolf, albeit an extremely tiny one. It was more the size of a fox – and with that colouring it looked like one – than a wolf, which he gauged to barely reach up to his well muscle-toned chest. A white muzzle and underbelly was effortlessly seen against a rusty hued coat – made easier to see with it lazing around in a sitting position, with dark grey hairs along the wolf’s face. The wolf had a bony build, making it look almost scrawny. Yet, if he looked closer, the hint of muscles beneath its coat was seen. But the most striking feature of all was the deep, warm copper eyes that were set into a kind face. Oh yes, the wolf was also female.

His eyebrows raised slightly as he finished scanning over her lithe, diminutive body, a slight boyish grin on his face. Surely a wolf such as her would have a male or two, maybe even three vying for her love, and he could possibly use it in such a way that would get a desired reaction out of them. But, then again, there could be none, but one had to ask to find out, right? Clearing his throat softly to alert his presence to the rust-coloured fae – unless if she already knew he was there – the Young Hellion padded slowly closer to her, stopping when he was about ten feet away, not wanting to make a bad impression on her. That always ended badly for him, so he attempted to get into their “good book” before trying anything daring.

Standing neutrally; tail held low but not curled, ears up straight but slightly angled to the sides, head held normally, if an inch lower, and eyes staring at the rust-coloured fae, but not directly into her copper brown eyes. He had no idea what kind of wolf she was, if she took offense to how others acted around her, or if she didn’t care, maybe it was a mix of both. But for now, he would seem respectful of her, and not put a toe out of line until he had reason to.

A large, friendly smile widened his jaws so all of his teeth were seen for just a second; the incisors, canines and carnassials. With his dark head canted to the side, ears pricked slightly and tail moving back and forth in the ‘wagging' motion, he spoke in his richly deep voice, a hint of teasing in his voice. “Enjoying the silence and sun?” Not that there was much silence with the twittering and chattering of small animals above, or the fact that there was any sun. It was barely enough to warm his dark fur – which attracted the heat, never mind to bask in its glory. But, he would try to make a light conversation before beginning with his devilish mind games.

Fun was the only word to describe it.

She felt more than noticed her eyelids slide back down, darkness, dotted with colored splotches from the sun, replacing the glistening ice and water; I could stay here forever... The only thing missing was company - her heart ached again at the memories of her family, far away to the north. But she wasn't alone here; the pain was dulled by fluttering warmth as she thought of Coal, the large, kind-hearted, strong man, who made her feel at home even though she was far away from her siblings, he was her family now. A new heat, which couldn't be blamed on the sun, flushed her cheeks - it was so strange, to have someone make her feel like this, someone she hadn't even known for that long, and yet it felt like an eternity...

A gentle sound disturbed her thoughts, her eyes springing back open, ears turning back, in direction of the noise. Her head followed them, swiveling to look over her shoulder, where an unknown wolf was emerging from the thickets. His body was large, almost as big as Coals, and covered mostly in dark hairs; clear amber eyes watching her prudently. The fox-like dame looked back warily, breathing in deeply to study his scent - he had come against the wind, making it hard to catch - but she found both Hollow's and Nina's marks on him, making her relax a little; Of course, how else would he have come this far into the territory?! Shaking her head lightly at herself, she blinked once and offered the stranger a courteous smile.

His demeanor seemed completely friendly, and when he offered a warm grin along with a polite question, she wasn't late to reply in tune. Her own smile widening, she nodded her head; "Yes, very much!" Lifting herself up into a standing position, she copied the motion of his tail, eyes sliding openly along his features as she continued: "I hope you are too? You have it easy with that pelt!" Cocking a brow, she sought to meet his eyes, a glimmer of good-hearted teasing in her own coppers. He was an interesting character big and bulky, with a few white markings that stood out starkly against his otherwise dark-brown and black coat; so different from Coal, with his mix of light, sand colored hairs, and who, despite his big size and clear muscles, had never seemed Bulky to her.

After a short pause, Aideen inclined her head slightly and spoke: "You're new around here, right? I haven't seen you before..." Not that she had seen much to her new pack mates, with the harsh winter making everyone so busy, scouting and hunting for food; It hadn't come to much more than glimpses and a few, short conversations - but she felt like she would have remembered this boy among them. With a fresh grin, the slender fae straightened her head; "My name's Aideen, nice to meet you!"

I’m the worst person ever ,-, @Aideen

The Young Hellion watched as the tiny rust-coloured fae smiled in return to his own, while nodding her head and replying back enthusiastically. She lifted herself up into a standing position – which was around his shoulder height – and continued speaking in the same, eager tone. She seemed to either get very excited when meeting new wolves, or was just very animated in overall, but whichever way, it irked him. Wolves like her often got in his way and were constantly blabbering or moving, when they could instead do things that forwarded them in the world hierarchy. But he had to be a good boy and act nicely, otherwise it would be all for nothing.

Letting a friendly smile lift the corners of his lips – which sickened him internally – Anouke nodded his dark head, as if agreeing with her, even though what he really was doing was searching for wolves like her to glean information from to use for his own purposes. “Yes, I am, but I was also looking for company.” Just a bit of extra material for the fae to think about, and hopefully distract her from any slight mistakes he may make.

Raising his eyebrows infinitesimally at the rust-coloured fae’s next words, he nodded again. He had been around for a few weeks, trying his best to not run into anyone so he could get his strengths back up, and attempt to learn his way around the thicket before he returned to his tricks. “You could say I’m a recent member…” not exactly new anymore, he thought silently to himself with an inside smile.

When she gave her name the Young Hellion had to keep from frowning. What was with these wolves? They all gave out their names without a second thought, or even a first. All of them were too trusting, carefree and careless. But if someone who wasn’t on the same side knew their name, then it would be easy to track them, wherever they were going. Nevertheless, he had to act like one, as surely no one would suspect him, at least until he started really tearing the members apart and setting them on each other.

Flicking his ears in a three hundred and sixty degree angle to make sure no one was listening, he replied to her words. “Hello, Aideen. I am Anouke.” As she didn’t give her last name, he wouldn’t give his. It was never good to give out more information than the other was, or to not give enough, so he always gave exactly what they give, sometimes a little less when he didn’t need to. “Have you met anyone else in the pack?” Anouke suddenly asked, appearing to be curious while actually he was interested for who the other members were, before he actually met them.

She wagged her tail happily when the dark man smiled back, ears perking as he spoke; Company..? That I can certainly provide! He seemed slightly hesitant in his next response, admitting that he was a resent addition; maybe subtly implying that he wasn't so new. The slender fae felt a light blush creep over her cheeks, she had assumed wrong it appeared; Just because you haven't seen him, it doesn't mean he's NEW! Her copper eyes lowered for awhile, only returning when he spoke again, answering her greeting with his own name.

She smiled warmly, nodding once in acknowledgement. Her tail was still wagging placidly, kind eyes attentively watching the big male, a slight heat still lingering on her cheeks; I wander what he has been up to then, since I HAVEN'T seen him... She was about to ask, when he opened his maw, proposing a question of his own. Aideen's ears twitched, her head once more tilting in surprise at the inquiry. But she wasn't late to answer, still smiling, her voice friendly; "Oh, not many I guess," She felt another wave of embarrassment, here she had accused him of being new, and now he was putting her on the spot; "I met both Nina and Hollow when I came here, and Ashanti, the healer, was the one to first tell me about Secret Woodlands..." One paw scraping at the light snow, the reddish girl glanced down in her light discomfort; "Then there's Coal of course..."

Her smile turned shy, eyes remaining fixed on her paw and the small groove it was slowly creating in the floor. Not knowing what else to say, she remained quiet, casting a quick, almost sheepish glance back up at Anouke; Is that really all... She had seen a few others, but never had a conversation, let alone gotten a name from any of them. Then, at a quick impulse, she send the dark boy another smile; "And now you."

If you say so ^^ <3

At his question the rust-coloured female’s head tilted to the side, as if she was curious or surprised, but her answer was quick and friendly, with a smile on her face throughout the whole sentence. “Oh, not many I guess,” He had no idea how long she had been a part of the pack, but it had surely been longer than him, and she was either very shy and not willing to meet with strangers (though he seriously doubted as she seemed overly friendly and excitable) or often wandered by herself, just as he did. But at times he did go searching for wolves to meet if he was bored or was looking for some sort of enjoyment.

The Young Hellion listened as the female started to tell him who she had met during her time in the pack. He separated the names into two different sections: those he knew, Nina and Hollow, and those he didn’t; Ashanti and Coal. He did not care for the sob story of who had told her about what, but the names he put to memory for further use. Eyebrows raising infinitesimally as the female looked down at her paws, her smile becoming shyer at the mention of Coal. Yes, that was what he had been searching for. Inwardly elated, he made sure to just look curious on the outside, as to hopefully not give out any indications as to what he really was thinking about.

Canting his head ever so marginally as she smiled and added a “And now you.” Anouke waited a few seconds if the female had anything else to say, before allowing a warm smile onto his face, even though it sickened him to do it. “Then I should also say you are one of the first I have met,” he said softly, as if chagrined that he too, had not met many members. Looking down very briefly at his paws, he glanced around to see if there was no one encroaching in on their conversation, before glancing back at the tiny rust-coloured female. “If I may ask miss, who is this Coal?” Being polite was not something he was used to, or in fact liked to do, but he would to find out the information he needed. After all, being deceptive was his passe-partout.

Aideen Smoke

Another might have noticed the dark man's reactions, or lag thereof, maybe Aideen would even have seen how little his face changed, had she not been so absorbed in her thoughts about @Coal . While her eyes were still on Anouke, ears politely pointed, her mind was with the buff male, her heart fluttering when she imagined his warm body next to hers, the soft look in his dark eyes...

Only as the bistre brute spoke again, did her attention return to the present - a small huff escaping her maw as her daydreams shattered like spring ice, leaving her body suddenly feeling oddly cold without his warmth beside her - ears flicking as the other's voice reached them. His words made the slender dame feel less awkward about her current lag of a coterie within The Woodlands; It has been quite busy here... Everyone was fighting the cold, contributing their utmost to assure that the pack would survive the winter; There will be time enough to get to know everyone.

So she nodded with an understanding smile, parting her lips to make a comment about the harsh season keeping everyone on their paws, but he spoke again before she could. Heat instantly rushed back to her, just cooling, cheeks, eyes darting back towards the ground; but she forced herself to look at the dark man, even as she blushed fully. Clearing her throat, she spoke quickly - before all courage could leave her - in that rushed manner of hers, one word stumbling over the previous; "Oh, oh no, no miss please... Just Aideen." She smiled sheepishly, pausing to take a deep breath, trying to slow down her speech. It didn't help much; "Coal is... Well... He's my... Friend. My close friend. We met in the fall and... We came here, together..." She kept smiling, successfully holding her eyes on the big wolf as she spoke; though her heart was beating loudly in her ears.

It was so strange, this feeling that came upon her every time she thought of her large companion; the way her tongue tied up whenever she tried to speak of him. Her body felt hot and cold, numb and at the same time tinkling all over, and she couldn't stop smiling. Broad and bright and goofily, lighting up her hole face; I miss him. It was stupid! He was right here, in Secret Woodlands, a few miles away at most. But as long as he wasn't right next to her, she felt lonely.

Once again @Aideen, I'm a bit late >.> -grumbles at school-

The Young Hellion fought back a smirk; he had received the reaction he had been looking for. It seemed there was something between the dame before him and a wolf that went by the name of Coal. Maybe he could find a way to get between them, turn them on each other, or make the other male jealous and provoke him into a fight. That was always fun, but there were many things he could do, and before he could choose which task he would complete, he had to find out more about their relationship. That was the hard part, as some wolves were reluctant to give him any information.

His right eyebrow raised slightly as the rust-coloured female hurriedly spoke, asking him not to call her miss, just Aideen. Well, he could certainly do that, not that he cared either way. It was just a name to call another, and names were no important, just like talking. It was not crucial for survival, and so he could live without it, would live without it. The constant chatter grated on his nerves, and when wolves did not shut up he felt like tearing them to pieces just to get some peace and quiet, but like the wolf he was, he would not do it for the sake of keeping his ‘image’ relatively clean.

Dark ears pricking as the dame continued, Anouke watched her, attempting to look sincere and genuinely interested in what she was saying, while really, on the inside he was working out what he could use and what was useless to him. Forcing a smile onto his face, he nodded. “I see… and is this Coal particularly close to you?” He tried to make his voice and expression curious, and not eager, like he was feeling inside. That would ruin all his plans for the encounter otherwise. One slip-up: conversation over.

- I think this would be a good time to bring in @Coal ^^

She was feeling all hot and flustered, all this talk of Coal making her ears burn. @Anouke was being sociably inquisitive, and it was making her awfully uncomfortable. She didn't even know why, there was no reason to, but just thinking of her large friend made her all warm and giddy, and talking about him without stumbling over her words was very hard. Turning her eyes down, the orange wolfess awkwardly rubbed on leg against the other, trying - yet knowing she was failing - to hide her abashment. She felt an odd mixture of joy at the opportunity to talk about her feelings and, strangely, reluctance, like the black male was violating her privacy by asking about her relationship with Coal.

For a long time she stood silently, staring at the ground, rubbing her leg absently while she thought; What should I say? Maybe I should lie to him..? But it was hard to lie when you weren't even sure what the truth was; Is he CLOSE to me..? I'm not sure, I guess... Another option was to say nothing, copper eyes glanced back op at the opposing wolf, his large silhouette beginning to feel strangely intruding; I have to say something to him. She cleared her throat, raising her head to look at Anouke once more, a soft smile returning to her face. There was a hint of nervousness to her gaze now, though she was still trying to be friendly, and her voice was not quite as eager as before when she spoke; "Well... I guess you could say that. We... We've been through a lot together, we share a den." The last just slipped out, like the part of her that was thrilled with her developing relationship just had to brag.

Making a quick grimace, somewhere between embarrassment and regret, the fox-like lass turned her eyes away again; this time feigning interest in the leafless canopies above them, following the branches in an almost mock picture of disinterest. Inside her body was in turmoil, her heart was raising, thoughts running wild. Several different impulses ran through her at once, to run, to turn aggressive, to laugh... To cry..? For some reason, what had seemed like an everyday, neighborly interaction had become an uncomfortable and aggravating situation, and she just wanted it to end!
