April – Spring – Early Evening – Partly Cloudy — Current Temperature: 43° F/6° C
The Silver Male had been exploring the territories around Magnolia Glen in the late afternoon when it was warmer, to see what was close by and could be a danger to his new family. So far he hadn’t scented a whiff of pack borders, which was a good thing. Competing for food and territory was not something he would have liked to be doing in a pack, especially when the packs were hungry and emotionally drained from the harsh winter.
Padding through the red fern forest – which explained everything about it – he was alertly and constantly looking around him, nose twitching and ears rotating. He did not know the area much, if at all, and so all of his senses were on the lookout for predators or other wolves. But it was very quiet, and so Ace doubted anything would happen. But one could never be too relaxed in the world. After all, it only took a few seconds for something to happen and for a life to end.
The trees were spaced a fair amount apart, letting the evening sun shine down from above, a half-moon of orange and yellow amongst a patchwork quilt of dark blue and faded white. The day was almost coming to a close, and so the Silver Male turned his large bulk around to head back in the direction of the borders, and ultimately the den site. It would take him a fair while to return home, but not too long. He didn’t stray too far from his home, as it was dangerous to be by oneself in the night.
