Kass' light brown fur brushed up against a tree as he narrowly made his way through the marsh. His eyes focused as his paws crunched lightly in the light and fluffy snow. His eyes steadied as he looked ahead towards his target, plants that were budding as Spring took its own time to finally get into his grasp. He wanted spring badly and the winter had not been kind on the lone wolf. He was practically starving, finding it difficult to get a meal. What was worse was the fact that his fur was tattered and messed up more than it normally was. He had a bad feeling about it all.

Soon it would be pup season and so Kassander knew his window of opportunity to get into a pack was narrow. It was starting to open while closing at the same time. He knew the best time to get into a pack during the spring was after winter and before the pups were close to being born. "Davay Kass, vy mozhete sdelat' eto. Vy mozhete sdelat' eto." He whispered to himself with his eyes closed. He was trying to focus on what he was suppose to be doing. Truth was, the boy had no idea what he was doing. He took another deep breathe as he looked around the marsh. Surely there was something to eat there to sedate his stomach until he could find something else. He doubted there was any prey in the area, but he knew there were certain plants and herbs that could help.

That was what the boy loved about learning and knowledge. The fact that it helped so much in life itself.

Capella Destae

Capella had always liked the feel of Earth beneath her paws, but slush was another matter entirely. Mud coated her legs, and underbelly, but she couldn't be bothered with cleaning it off. There wasn't much that could worry her anymore. Once a social butterfly had lived within this body, but she was gone, and now Capella was nothing more than a husk. Curious eyes that once saw life as an adventure were now replaced by a lifeless gaze. Walking within the path of danger was the only thing that really made her feel alive anymore, and maybe that was what brought her so far south. There were packs here she knew, and just maybe, she was looking for a thrill.

It wasn't long before the scent of another entered her radar. He was alone, and didn't even belong to a pack. A strange sense of disappointment filtered through her at the realization. 'So be it' she thought, and deterred her course toward the male. Making friends was no longer one of her strongest traits, in fact she had limited her interactions to only Lachesis, unless of course it was for the pack. She wouldn't forget her duties to them, even though she wished she could. Some days she wished she didn't have to leave the den, and others were best spent as far away as possible. Today had been one of them.

When his pelt came into view, she found that he looked familiar. Another coat that belonged to another wolf, too long ago to remember anymore. Her mind did a good job blocking things out, and so what was forgotten was best not remembered. She said nothing, waiting for him to make a move. Was he a friend, a foe, something else entirely? Interested enough to find out, the pale fae stopped, waiting to hear what he had to say.

Kassander had been quite fine to mind his own business and disappear. He was talking to himself still in a susurrant voice and it was almost filled with woe and pain. He was hungry.... so hungry. But weren't all wolves in the harsh winter that the gods had cursed them with. Kassander did not often take to religion, he never really prayed or preached about what he believed in the universe, however the winter had forced him to bow to the gods and goddesses he believed in. He remembered meeting another wolf who had taught Kass to fight. He had always told the boy one thing as a pup. There is only one god and his name is death. Do you know what we say to death Kassander? When Kassander had not known the answer the man had told him. Not today.

The stranger hadn't even given Kass his name, but that was quite alright because Kassander could memorize herbs and their names with their purposes like nothing but the names of wolves always seemed to kill him to remember. The way the lanky teen had seen it was that herbs could save his life more than remembering a wolf's name. Sometimes he could swear he even forgot his own name. The light tawny and complex boy hadn't even noticed another wolf in the area. He had chosen to block out the entire world as he went on to continue his thoughts about life and herbs and food. I need food. His stomach rumbled at him with a booming voice that seemed to shake him from his daze. It was then that he caught the scent and turned to see a lone female with a pack scent looking at him as if waiting for him to make the first move.

Oh Kass would make the first move all right. He turned and started to hurry away as the boy feared more social interactions that were not necessary for his survival. Kassander Xanilov was a strange wolf indeed because he sought to avoid his own kind unless absolutely necessary. He had the desire to join a pack, which was normal for the normally social breed of animals but that was it.

The male turned away almost instantly, forcing an eerie smile on to her face. Had she really been that intimidating? A strange sense of humor overtook her as she thought about being a creature worth being afraid of. Only then did the light sound of coyotes dance across her ears. A gust of wind brought with it the scent of moose as well. Inwardly sighing, she knew that she had to do what was right. The stranger didn't even belong to a pack, and he was probably starving. "Wait!" She called after him, hoping that he would turn around. "There's food here if you're hungry." A glimpse of the girl she once was peaked through; Her heart too good to let him go hungry.

After all, if her circumstances had been different she'd want someone to display the same kindness. The winter was hard on all of them, but forgetting yourself in the madness was unacceptable. Nodding lightly in the direction of the carcass she stepped back. It wouldn't be difficult to scare off the annoying pests already scavenging at the carcass, and Capella was sure there would be plenty left.

Her strange mood was gone now, replaced by the hollow shell that remained. However she had to admit, her little adventure had been fun. She had almost felt alive again, struggling against current rather than sinking to the bottom.

Kassander hadn't looked back until he heard the distinct and clear words from the other yearling. Hunger? Da, ya ochen' goloden. Eto surovaya zima. He told himself as he turned towards the female with a slight cock of his head. His mind thought about the food as soon as he had caught the scent and later when he had seen it. He needed it to survive any longer. He hungrily ran over to it and started to gnaw off of it almost like a savage. It had been his first decent meal in a while and it was quite obvious. The yearling healer looked briefly at the female to make sure she was eating too, as he would not be so selfish as to take everything for himself, before he went pack to eating.

The meat was older, a carcass catch, but it was food and it tasted good. His hunger remained but it was sedated all the same. He licked his lips and smiled as he spoke in his native tongue. "YA blagodaryu vas za vashu dobrotu mem." He was under the impression that the wolves in the area would understand him and if they did not than he would have to learn their language. His eyes held a small flicker of hope. He was anxious for spring to return to them. He wanted to feel the heat on his back from the glowing sun as well as the plentiful amount of food. Fresh food. He missed it all!

All Kassander could wish for was a warm summer with plentiful prey. He hoped that his Gods would hear his prayer for such things and decide to bless him with his wish.

She moved towards the kill in silence, only glancing up with sunny eyes every so often to make sure he was comfortable. Settling in beside him, she ate as far from him as she could. It wasn't uncommon for one to be food aggressive, or at least very protective over their meal. Especially when food was so hard to come by. Chewing slowly, she savored each bite, happy to hear him crunching away. This male would be safe for he next few days, hopefully that would give him just enough time to luck into some sort of prey. They could not lose another this winter, regardless of how little she knew them.

When she finished, the pale girl moved away in hopes of putting a little distance between them. She no longer felt comfortable around anyone, and this male was no exception. Then he spoke, his tongue twisting words she could not understand. Bright eyes filled with a curious light as she questioned him. "I'm sorry?" Hoping with all of her heart that this male knew her common tongue, she begged him to repeat it for her. What did he mean? Simply delighted, Capella realized for the first time that small things truly could make her happy. Her curiosity hadn't left her! Could that mean she was still in there somewhere? Just as her Lachesis had been left on the mountain, she'd assumed her old self had been stuck in Pitch Pine.

Did any wolf speak anything he could understand? No? That was what he thought. Every wolf in the strange new land seemed to speak the same native tongue to him and so he cocked his head to the side as he, once more, attempted to piece together broken and choppy English sentences. He drew up a deep breathe and held it for a few seconds before letting it go as he began his embarrassing lack of knowledge in the language called English. "T-Thank Thank y-yo-you for k-kindness?" He struggled out as almost a question as he looked at the girl with desperate eyes. He needed an understanding that what he said was somewhat close to what he had stated as a thank you in Russian.

He had started to become very frustrated on how he couldn't get the words out properly and how he could barely understand a damned thing that was said around the parts he now roamed. He felt embarrassed and so his ears pressed down in sadness and defeat as he looked at his paws which were scraping at the ground. He couldn't do it. He just couldn't learn because no wolf around the parts knew Russian and English so none could teach him about what was going on and what words in Russian were words in English and it was all so confusing towards him. He looked at the picked apart carcass and frowned. His stomach rumbled still, but it would be enough to hold him until he could hopefully find something else.
