The trip had taken a little longer than expected.
The first two days passed swiftly. Beyond the pack border uncertainty hastened her pace. Something, someone, had attacked Hollowheart Keep and sent it's members scattering. They had been after something and presumably they had found it, for there was no trace of them now. The why of it plagued her. A lone traveler would have nothing of value to the shadowy attacker. But she couldn't know, so she kept her head down low and her feet moving fast. She reached Whisper Caverns in good time. The warning was well-received by Narime. Night was falling by the time she finished and she declined their offer to spend the night. She didn't say it, but a pack was more likely to attract the wrong kind of attention than a single wolf sleeping in the forest. She felt safer away from their borders.
Aided by helpful directions, dawn found her searching out Willow Ridge, expecting to give the same warning to a different face. The conversation was a pleasant surprise, and yet a flicker of irritation twisted in her gaze. The reason she had no qualms with, her parents would have done the same over less, and it seemed perfectly rational to the Barberi wolf. However, a warning would have been appreciated. But Elettra was not a woman that should be corrected, and certainly not by her, so she kept her mouth shut.
The trip back was held up by a detour to the Whisper Caverns. At least, Iopah grumbled to herself, I'm considerate enough to keep my allies informed.
The trip gave her a respite from normal life. But as the familiar forest came into sight, her uncertainty shifted. Nina wanted to speak with her. Iopah was dreading the topic, she knew it would be about more than this trip. For days she'd been avoiding Koda. They had become close friends, a rarity for her, and she'd been hurt when Koda had challenged Miccah to return to Nina's side. In her confusion she'd assumed he still loved Nina and that their relationship had been unimportant to him. Just before leaving she'd learned otherwise. And now Nina wanted to discuss that. How would Nina react to the news that her second cared for Koda more strongly than was appropriate? That she wanted something that wasn't hers? How could Iopah even articulate all that? Iopah was a patient teacher, attentive baby-sitter and a skilled hunter, but she wasn't an eloquent speaker. Unspoken, the words were already twisting in her mind. She wanted to tell the truth, but how could she make the words say what she felt? They would have to be enough. She had to make her words anything but empty. Her head tilted back and a soft howl announced her presence. This discussion had to happen, might as well not wait.
