Angier Lyall
You like the smell of blood
When it's pumpin' like a factory
Ooh, you like your words to cut
You like to choose the best artillery
I wonder who you're thinkin' of
Who am I
Am I the epitome
Of everything you hate
And you desire
You love me like an enemy.

ANGIER LYALL
my love, he's going to strike us down

February 7th/8th; After midnight; Along WR territory markers; Freezing fog; 23 ° F, -5 ° C.

When the snow had finally let up, the fog had returned to Relic Lore, rendering the willows into eerie, melancholic shapes with their branches lilting downward into the ground. Every place where one could barely see past a meter radius around them, was a dangerous playground for one of Willow Ridge's most dangerous pack member - Skoll. No longer was he a sweet roly-poly puppy, the once-endearing prince who could barely get the "s's" in his words out from between his teeth and the proper pronunciations off his tongue. Sköll Archer was a monster. He had killed, teased and bullied; he was always skulking around as though he had some terrible secret to hide. Since his homecoming from some strange territory in the north, the murder of another pack's Leaders, it was obvious that something within the boy had changed. Gone was the lanky stripling who lived solely for his mother's praise and, in his place, a beast who thirsted for blood had arisen.

It was with a dutiful need to be productive that Angier Lyall had wandered far into the night, strolling along the borders and pressing the pads of his paws into every tree he passed; and, while the fear of his step-son lingered at the back of his mind, he forced himself to continue brushing it aside. Even if he could not count on Skoll keeping well away from him for the fear of his mother, he could not risk letting anyone see through his front of being a fearless, undaunted Leader.

In the distance, a curious set of steps, one that had a heavy limp in its rhythm, sounded out in the night. He couldn't help but to scowl, hoping someone hadn't gotten injured on Skoll's account. These days, though, it wasn't such a far-fetched idea, especially when only moments ago he could have sworn the yearlings were bickering amongst themselves. One of his forepaws inched forward but before he could urge himself onward, he scented @Elettra nearby and he had to brace himself. Perhaps she had known or witnessed what had happened.

He moved to draw closer to her, his eyes straining through the dark to spot her between the trees. As a measure of caution, he let out a low whine, the worried sort of greeting that he only reserved for his beloved when he knew something was not quite right...

Elettra Archer
Finally, she had found him. Whilst a very deep relief had come over her by a sigh stirring from her lips and into the foggy air, there was much worry in the pale eyes of Elettra Archer. The whine that she had been balling up in her throat, tightening there, finally spilled out over in the air and her limbs moved once more, quick stepping into Angier's direction until she was under his embrace, her muzzle slipping through the thick fur along the side of his neck. For a moment she is still there, breathing deep, her tense muscles quivering against him. The extremely deep anger she had felt towards Skoll was now filled with worry and questioning at what exactly to do with her son. If demanding his respect and attention through words did not work, if pushing her dominance physically against him in order to try to put him in his place did not put the pieces back where they should be... then what next? "Something serious has happened with Skoll..." She finally says then. She pulls away from her mate, leaving enough room to search his features. To sit down before him on in the dim lighting of the foggy forest. "He is so out of control. He has changed and I don't know what to do." And whats more, the division between 'Angier Lyalls' and 'Borden Lyalls' now seemed to have hit full swing.

ANGIER LYALL
my love, he's going to strike us down

Eventually she appeared, her swarthy form separating itself from the darkness with every step she took toward him. She was worried; not only could he see it gleam back at him in the depths of her pale eyes, but he could scent it in the air. Something had indeed happened. His heartbeat began to drum against his ribs, welcoming her into his embrace without even a moment's hesitance. She had needed him and he was more than ready and willing to take control of the situation that was soon to be presented to him.

Her whine was returned with a low growl, one that hinted at his displeasure of seeing his beloved in such a state. She shivered and he draped his head over her neck, tucking his chin into her fur as to draw her closer and keep her near. It was with a cautious and wary eye that he cast his yellow-eyed gaze into the darkness beyond her, listening for anything - the gallop of hurried footsteps rushing past, that worrisome rhythm of staggered steps he had heard before, the continuing of the yips and growls that had abruptly stopped just minutes before Elettra's arrival.

If he could have had it his way, he would have remained like this forever, wanting to persistently be the harbor and safe haven in which she weathered out the storm. He gently lifted his head, though, and stood up straight, allowing her to withdraw from him in turn. She sat down before him, but he was not sure if he ought to do the same in case whatever she said was a prompt to have him hunting through the dark for the culprit of it all. It was clear the forest was in a state of unrest and, while he swore he knew what the reason for it all had been (these days, it really was no question in whether or not Sköll was the one making all the ruckus), her statement only confirmed it all.

"Something serious has happened with Skoll..." she said. The bridge of Angier's muzzle wrinkled, revealing his teeth as he openly growled in response. He held his tongue; the last time he had told Elettra "I told you so..." had resulted in something of an argument in itself. She continued to tell him that her look-alike son was out of control and that he had changed. What was the most stressful of it all was that for the first time, the Archer matriarch did not know what to do.

The tawny Leader's hackles rose and he took a few steps as to pace protectively around her, certain he had caught a whiff of the prince in the chilled fog. Despite his fearsome glower and the exposure of his teeth, he drew close to her with his tail raised in the air and nuzzled his forehead and the side of his face into her shoulder. He wanted her to wordlessly know that she had him to rely on, no matter what.

He drew away from her again as to cast her an expectant gaze from the corner of his eye, "I know th'yearlings are up ta somethin', but what of Sköll... What 'as 'e done now?"

Elettra Archer
He had her complete and full attention, his raised hackles, the snarl on his features, his pacing, the need to repeated touch himself against her to allow her to know more clearly he was there for her, to do anything for her, no matter what... She breathes deep, her eyes cast out over the lands, flickering about them, as though perhaps Skoll might show his face much more soon then she was ready for. "It is no longer petty tricks and squabbles, ever since the King in the North...." She shuts up, her teeth grinding in thought. What had been done was done, the whole of that entire pack suffering for the foolish mistake of one woman, letting the land to know not to ever mess with the Willow Ridge pack. Still, it had not been just vengeance that day, it had been outright murder and now Elettra began to realize more and more that Skoll had not killed that man in revenge for his stolen brother, but he had done it for himself.

"A visitor came by today, a young male I only found out after was named Rook." Her pale eyes lifted then, searching to Angier, for surely he knew his nephew well. "His pleas for help were far more demanding then I'd allow. He smelt of Cut Rock River (an enemy by default) though said he came on behalf of Whisper Caverns - Jaysyek, more specifically." Though the truth in that had yet to be determined. Jaysyek had freely come here before with concern over Kiche, why not make the travel for her own mate, especially over such a delicate subject as Borden. "He did not say what the help inquired, but that is was for Borden and he needed it." The subject was very delicate, of course, granted this was Angier's brother they were speaking about. From what little information Rook had given her, it seemed something was wrong with Borden, though how, physically or mentally, was up in the air. He spat on her about Jaysyek and Elettra's alliance, forgoing the fact that Elettra equally detest her mate. "Skoll outright attacked Rook in the middle of our conversation. Quil and Renier intervened... Needless to say, Rook left... Quil and Cinder went with him." She pauses, letting this all sink in for Angier before continuing on. "Skoll mentioned something about Rook taking what was his, that the Attaya sisters had belonged to him, something which I don't know about and makes no sense to me." She had not thought ether sister was particularly close to Skoll in any way, though even still they were of no property. "He screamed for me to allow him to kill Rook, which I denied, though I am certain he has every intention to seek him out and do just that." In truth, if it came down to a fight, Elettra would always choose her son (especially against someone who was now more of an enemy to her then anything) though it did not mean it was right.

Sköll Archer
crowned heads on a chopping block

The dark prince could not stay away for long, much too nosy for his own good, despite what he had just told his mother only moments ago. He had made a wide circle around the area where he calculated his mother would be headed, waiting and wondering if Angier would, as per usual, come running for her. From where he stood his mother's first statement was a soft murmur against his eardrums. Judging by the - was that desperation he heard? Helplessness? Fear? - tone of her voice, it seemed Elettra was unloading all of her fears, wanting the Lyall to share her burden. An ugly sneer disfigured the whole of his maw and face as he dared to creep closer, the pace of his steps likened to the whisper of dried leaves being swept across the ground by the wind.

His head lowered and his stride slowed. He could have very well been attempting to creep up on a herd of deer. His black brow furrowed. It was rare to hear his mother complain and when he had been younger, he swore that he would never be one of her problems. He was her favorite son, her little lookalike, her darling, her pride and joy... Now look where he had ended up and she was now telling his step-father of what he had just done.

He was careful to not give in to the tempting need to snort at all of it, to openly laugh so that all within earshot knew that the crown prince, Elettra's son, dared to mock her - that he was without fear and without morals, that he was the one to keep an eye out for. Just because Rook had taken the only age-mate women within the pack who were not related to him, Sköll Archer was going to do whatever he could to ensure that he was repaid and compensated for his Mother's grievous error in letting them leave Willow Ridge.

On swift feet, he scampered towards Angier's back, using the brute's voice as a guide in the thick fog. His shoulders squared and he lowered his head further, dipping his muzzle downward as he continued to listen to them. If his corrections were correct, he might have been able to pummel into the tawny Leader in a matter of three or four lengthy bounds. In the dark of night, he would be hard to detect or even see coming, but it was all too delicious just listening to ramble like that... so panicked and needy. He crept away from them, his ears still straining to listen as he attempted to drag out his departure as long as he could before he allowed the darkness and the silent willows within it had hidden him safely away.

A 'special' 1k word post for you. <3 Presuming Angier had heard of Sköll's feat in killing "that Leader" (Mapplethorpe) from Elettra because "they are the kind of mates who share mostly everything with one another...?" Please let me know if I need to change/correct/revise anything!

ANGIER LYALL
my love, he's going to strike us down

His tone might have actually been too harsh on his tongue, but it was, nevertheless, appropriate. Never mind for now that El had chosen to . Someone had come to Willow Ridge not long ago - Rook - asking for help. He was a Cut Rock River wolf, she divulged (which made the fur along his spine stand up on end), but why he had come was news to the estranged Lyall. The immediate mention of Jaysysek made his heart drop. Obviously, something had happened, but why had the enemy in the north-west picked up on her name? Had she attempted to return to Grizzly Hollow? Was she alone and why had she gone back to the Cedarwood? If she had, what was going on with her family - the nephews he had escorted to the north, the daughters she had taken with her in following his trail... Borden, whom he had last known to be traveling to the east in search of Taima?

Speaking of his brother, his name came next to tumble from her tongue. Borden was the one who had needed aid. Angier's heart had fallen into the pit of his stomach; and, he noticed now just how carefully Elettra was unfolding the scenario before him. His time in Renegades Reach had been short - a few days at most - and Rook and his sister Bishop had been born long after his departure. By the time they had come to draw their first breaths, their uncle Angier was already making his way up Willow Ridge's ranks. This "Rook" fellow and why and how the Attaya sisters had come to trust him enough to follow him was a matter that could be discovered later; at the moment, the most pressing concern was his step-son who had apparently lured them all - his age-mates, his mother, him, and whoever else within the pack... - into some sort of sordid game. His use of rather possessive terms in the mentioning of Quil and Cinder, he knew was an internal cry for attention and a need to establish himself as someone powerful. Long ago, he, too, had used such vocabulary. Everything that Angier Lyall, the little second-born lord of Bertram Valley, had spoken of until his first birthday was in the expression of me, my, mine, and the usually aggressive not yours. Like Sköll, he had wits and the size but not enough brawn; and, where Angier had purely lacked the initiative to overtake his brother, Sköll lacked the mindset that regarded the formalities of his mother's reign.

Had Angier not heard of what Sköll had done to the unfortunate leader who was presumed to have taken Deacon away, he would have been surprised to hear such words: screaming at Elettra to kill another... No; these days it was absolutely predictable.

The low thundering in his chest and throat had subsided into a silence that hinted at the clarity he was experiencing then and there. Now he had to choose where he stood, make sense of it all, and somehow help his mate through the bewilderment of it all. The frown that had settled on his face did not let up. "He was jus' doing his job, El'," he murmured, one of his large ears swiveling to the side. "Sköll acts on 'is instincts an' wits. We both know this." His head whipped to the left as his attention was drawn over his shoulder, staring blindly into the fog-covered night. It seemed a breeze was making its way along the forest floor, yet the boughs above and around them did not rustle and dance in sync. His eyes darted from shadow the shadow, falling first on all the darkest places between the trees. Then, with turning back to his beloved, he drew closer to where she sat, standing to face her so that their temples touched and his nose and lips were nestled at the base of her ear. From a distance it would seem that they were merely embracing one another. He would not let danger come to him if it chose to rear its dark and ugly head. Never... so long as he was with Elettra, at her side, he would see her that she felt safe and secure and without worry.

"I will admit it now," he whispered, his words merely formed by moving air than vibrating vocal chords. "When we sent Sköll out in search of Deacon, I told 'im to do whatever was necessary to bring 'is brother back. I've encouraged this; he needed th'direction an' guidance an' I gave it to 'im. He found power within that simple instruction an' it's escalated into this. But, 'e knows about Cut Rock River, he knows what it takes to protect what is his - his fam'ly or otherwise. He felt he had to take out that other Leader to eliminate th' problem of missing cubs, so 'e did it. He prob'ly wanted Cinder an' Quil fer his own, a future mate. To him, they were of value, regardless whether they liked 'im or not... an' ya let them go."

"I've been where Sköll presently is in 'is adolescence. It's dark where 'e is an' he's covered 'imself with many masks, layers... he's put up walls, hidden his true sense of self deep within him where poss'bly no one can reach. This is what makes him so pow'rful," Angier's chin had begun to quiver and he had to take a moment to piece together his next sentence, "The sooner we apprehend 'im th'better, 'fore someone gets hurt again or killed."

Again, that soft crunch of dried grass underfoot made Angier turn his head, he moved to press his shoulder to Elettra's shoulder blade as he stood at her back, the adrenaline spiking through his veins. He circled around her once more then breathed into her other ear, "Listen: in order to get 'im, we will 'ave to play 'is game then ambush him when 'e believes he's won. He's testing us, that's it, nothin' else."

He caressed his nose to her cheek, "I know you wouldn't help Borden; but, I know ya would've helped Jaysyek if ya could. Whatever bus'ness this... Rook 'as with Cut Rock River is none of our bus'ness though. He'll 'ave to watch 'is back an' play along too if 'e wants to survive. We'll need to keep an eye on ev'ryone an' make them aware of what's 'appened; have 'em avoid Sköll at all costs. Maybe Renier was right in 'is instincts to help Quil interrupt 'im."

Elettra Archer
Of course they are those kind of mates, why wouldn't they be? :3

Her nose wrinkles, her teeth flashing but with silence as she listens to Angier's first bit of words. She was well aware of how Skoll handled things, yet was also well aware of the fact that it was not his duty to take charge - it was her own. Her very own son had stepped on her toes far too many times for the Leader to stand, testing not only her patience, but her Leadership skills. He was, without a doubt, devoted to his pack, but his loyalty to her had become far more questionable. "He is my subordinate." Her words lace with a low growl as Angier approaches. "It is his job to listen to me." Though it had been made very clear that Skoll was not on good terms with Angier, perhaps it was he who was blinded to his son's threatening display - his lack of respect for Elettra's demands, his testing stares, his prancing about, tail high as though these lands belonged to him.

She stiffens as Angier continues on, as he mentions what he had told Skoll and what the permission had thus allowed him to do, despite the fact that he had not been the one to actually find Deacon. Elettra breaths deep, yet says nothing, only hoping that Angier had a way of helping her with the situation at hand. His words, however, despite how he tried, did little to sooth her. Skoll was tearing their pack apart from the inside out, making enemies not only from within, but from outside of their lands that could come back and bite them in the ass in a very literal manner. If they did not do something quick, they could find themselves destroyed. Elettra Archer did not have time to play any games and scoffed at the very thought. She takes a few steps back from him, distancing herself as she turned to the sound of crunching leaves, the shifting of foliage not far off. "If your admitting you created this mess, then get rid of it." Her jaws snapped with irritated retort before turning and storming off away from her mate. If he could not fix this soon by playing chess with their child, then she would come in with the bull-dosser.

crowned heads on a chopping block

As if it had been expected, there came the praise that Sköll had been doing his job. The sneer on his white-furred muzzle gave way to a genuinely pleased smirk. He would have to be a bit more lenient on Angier now, even if just for that little sentiment for just a little while. Never in his wildest dreams had he thought that the Lyall would utter such a thing. His tail relaxed and as he fully turned away now and began to draw away from his superiors, the hushed murmurs continuing on somewhere at his back.

He wouldn't hear the rest of his step-father's rigmarole, his explanations about why the dark prince was the way he was. However, he did hear the all too familiar rumble of his mother's growl. Her displeasure and irritation from her mate's words. Being just far away enough from the duo to be considered a threat, he allowed that pent up laughter raucously echo into the night, the sound being just loud enough for his part of the willows to fall still with an attentiveness that warned any who happened to be near the Trickster to be wary.

Another guffaw and a snort - sounds that were much too far away for either Leader to hear now - verbally signaled that Sköll was finished being amused, that his fascination with Angier's prattle had worn thin. A quick shake of his coat in mid-step brought his pace to a slow walk before he came to complete stop at the sound of something snapping a twig somewhere off to his right. His nose and muzzle wrinkled and he immediately began walking away from the place where the crack had originated from.

He had already had a decent conversation with his mother just the day before or so, there was no need to stress or brood over that more than he needed to. One of his pointy ears swiveled to one side when he thought on a whim that the approacher could have been her... Piety. Hmm. His smile became more lopsided as he entertained the idea. Then, without so much as another thought or an interested chuff, he was off to where he had come from, slinking about beneath the willows in search of something to make his night worthwhile...

(Skoll Exit.)

ANGIER LYALL
my love, he's going to strike us down

Of course, a single nod from him conveyed as he realized the mistake he had made in admitting that it had been his doing that prompted Sköll to act in such a way. His black-lined lips pursed, but it was not in defiance; it was more like the defining feature of a determined expression on his tan and ivory face. "Yes, dear," he obliged without much pause or question as she moved to storm away from him. As irritated as she was, he did nothing to stop her or change her mind. Once Elettra Archer had made up her mind, from his point of view, typically, that meant that she would not change her decision or take back anything she had said; and, in turn, that meant that whatever she had declared, would be done.

He simply stared at her back with longing in his eyes before gathering his wits and noticing that something had caught her attention. His ears rose up atop his head and he stood at attention when that bone-chilling cackle rang out across the pitch black skies. A rumble lifted from his throat and as quickly as he strode up to Elettra's side, he was gone with nothing more than a gruff bark. If Angier Lyall was going take care of things - such as unruly children, challenging individuals, and disobedient, arrogant royals - he really was going to follow through and truly take care of it. No one gave his significant other lip and expected her to take it. Especially not when Angier was the one looking after her.
