Anneliese Schroder

April 6th 11:23 AM — Cloudy 25 ° F, -4 ° C
@Triell @Spieden

Returning a year later to Relic Lore was not the same Anneliese that had left it. What crossed back over the Sierra Hills, long legs coated thickly in the red-as-blood dust, was something of a shadow of what she had been before. For the first time in her life, through the disintegration of her birth pack, the companions come and gone, all the death she'd witnessed, the miles her paws had covered, Anneliese was lost. For the first time in her life, she had broke her word and compromised her values.

It was, perhaps, bound to happen. Such fierce loyalty could be a destructive path if not given singularly, especially when sworn to two opposing forces. She had claimed the young Lalani as her comrade, her best friend even, and promised both the youthful girl and herself that she would stay by her side and protect her. In following the girl, she was also called to swear herself to @Maksim and his pack, Cut Rock River. It had all gone so well, until Lalani had disappeared and Anneliese dispatched herself on a frantic search & rescue mission.

It hadn't been like her to vanish so thoroughly; she had always either been within the pack's territory, with Anneliese, or with the mute known as Taras. And so worry consumed Anneliese and what started as a simple scan of the outlying area gave way to a futile chasing of a faint scent dissipating by the second. She forgot herself in the haste, did not say a word to Maksim or his mate Kisla, nor anyone else within in the pack. It wasn't until she had stalked Lalani's scent out of Relic Lore that guilt assaulted her and she was forced to come to a stop.

It was at that time that she was forced to choose, the first straw of many that would break her back. She could either continue to pursue Lalani, completely abandoning the pack that had given them refuge, or she could deem Lalani irrecoverable and return to Maksim with a heartfelt apology. It took moments for her to weigh out these options, and in that time she decided to act upon who needed her the most. Maksim and his pack were strong, and Anneliese had been an incredibly new member with little to no ties within the domain besides Lalani. They would carry on unblinkingly without her; the only thought given to her would be to label her as a deserter. But it was this word that strained Anneliese's heart so; never before had she given a single soul reason to call her such a horrid thing, and it went against the code she held so dearly to her heart. Still, it could not be ignored; Lalani was on her own, emotionally unstable and more likely to make ten enemies than one friend. She needed Anneliese, and that was the deciding factor.

So with heated determination, Anneliese pressed on, delving deeper and deeper into foreign territories to chase a dying trail. Months and months she tracked Lalani, and some times she would gain hope, while at others she would lose it evermore. Even after the scent disappeared completely, she did the best she could to continue the hunt. However, even the most diligent must face the inevitability of truth.

On a frigid winter's night, in the shelter of ice-laden pine boughs, Anneliese reflected upon the futile journey she had undertaken. It was with heavy heart that she forced her racing heart to slow into a depression, allowing facts to clear the adrenaline from her veins and weigh her down with the simple fact that she had failed. Lalani would not be found, and Anneliese had long given up the opportunity to keep her word to Maksim. She had sacrificed for the wrong cause, and lost on both fields. The gravity of the situation was immense for her, and for the first time she found herself feeling empty and without any form of motivation.

It took her three days to shake it, and six months more to trace her steps back to Relic Lore. She could not return to the river pack, but she still craved familiarity; another oddity for one so consumed by wanderlust. The closer she came, the more the air around her warmed, as if beckoning for her to continue, rewarding each step with the promise of spring, of renewal. Anneliese scaled the red stained hills, and skittered down them, eager to plunge into the foggy recess of the Spectral Woods.

Upon her descent, however, two things assailed her senses, freezing her legs in place and widening her beryl eyes. Firstly, not too far from the foot of these hills directly ahead of her, was the boundary markings of an unfamiliar pack. Second, something mingled with the territorial markings, something was familiar for the first time in a year. She racked her brain, able to clearly picture his face but taking a moment to recall the name... @Drestig . Something close to hope began to flit around in her chest. She would never be able to make up for what had happened to Lalani, but she could find something of a second chance here if they allowed her into their ranks. This pack, she would not fail. She couldn't. And eventually in the far future, perhaps as an ambassador, she could find her way to Maksim and offer an apology.

Anneliese pressed forward, mindful of the boundary and her status in regards of this pack, and let out a couple of barks, hoping summon an audience. A part of her wished for Drestig to show, as she desperately craved a friendly face, but knew it was the alphas that she would need to contend with and persuade. It had been a long time she had been in such a position, but it felt good. Anna took in a deep breath, and the cold air felt fresh as it flowed within her lungs and filled her chest. Here was her redemption.

my lungs will fill and then deflate
they fill with fire, exhale desire
i know its dire, my time today

The grizzled female's powerful legs moved in a ground-eating trot as she traveled through the pack's territory. Nothing seemed out of place today, but Spieden was mindful that it was near this very place their lurking enemies had left a warning carved into the bark and desecrated into the snow and soil. The sole scrap of evidence besides Nayeli's word that she had been captured, and that others were on her trail. Spieden almost wished she would run into one of the vile beasts, rush into the very bloodbath the pack's second had warned about. It wasn't a feeling of righteousness, or revenge that coursed hot through Spieden's veins, but a need to defend. For now, and whether or not anyone liked it, this was her pack, her land, and her members to protect. Whether or not others appreciated her leadership, Spieden had no intentions of letting any of her packmates get hurt by whatever lurked out here.

As she neared the edge of the borders she paused, leaving a marking sign of scent and spreading the earth with her hind paws. Continuing on, she ventured further towards the red hills, ears flicking and heavy skull turning towards a few barks sent through the woods. Not aggressive in tone, simply the seeking call of a wolf. Spieden's head tipped back, throat releasing a deep, short howl signalling that she had heard them. She wondered if it were a trick, someone trying to catch her off guard. A more cautious wolf might have waited for backup, but the Coho woman tended towards the reckless side.

Trotting with tail raised in a banner, she approached towards where she'd heard the barking. A creamy coated wolf, equal in stature but lankier in frame, stood alone in the more open terrain of the hills. Spiedens amber eye's locked on the other female's bright green, her uneven ears directed assertively towards her. "Lotta trouble comin' outa these hills, lately. You better not be bringin' any with you." She said roughly.

Glade green eyes scanned ahead eagerly, hoping the requested counsel would come upon swift paws. Much to her mirth, it did, though swift only rang true in the sense of time and not in gait. A bear of a woman came out from the forest to meet her without welcome. Anneliese, however, was not put off but rather proved curious. She had not run into a single soul while traversing the hills, though a few scents had crossed her attention from time to time. Truly she wondered what sort of trouble the woman was speaking of, and immediately her knightly inclinations set into motion. Could they truly be in need of the skills she had only last implemented under the service of her King Emmett, in the vale of Vindictus? Though she wished not to desire dread upon these strangers, Anneliese craved the return to her roots like no other.

"No ma'am," she responded briskly, her warm and happy demeanor a stark contradiction to the disposition of the woman before her. Anneliese had by now, of course, appropriately kissed her stomach to the ground, assuming complete submission to who by scent and stature she could only guess was the lead lady of the woodland band she sought. "I bring with me only a desire to serve and protect. My name is Anneliese, and I seek a pack to call home. I can offer you my expertise in tracking, stealth and combat as well as my basic knowledge of medicinal means and poisons."

@Anneliese Sorry that took a while, I really had to think on a response! I'll try to be faster with the rest, I don't like to leave join threads hanging :)

As Spieden scrutinized the female before her, she noted with relief that she looked nothing like any of the vile band she was to keep an eye out for. Spieden relaxed slightly as the female lowered herself clear down to the ground. It was still hard to get used to such shows of respect towards her, but as leader she had been getting better at it. And really, a part of her liked the ability to strut around without worrying about disrespecting a superior. Compared to Anneliese, Spieden was rather dour of mood but was at least glad that the other wolf had gotten more or less straight to the point.

Spieden nodded slightly, providing her own introduction. "I'm Spieden Coho, leading Oak Tree Bend here. Triell Tainn is the other leader," She said offhand.  Already she was thinking of how the female would fit into the pack. Spieden never asked for much, and if Anneliese was capable of all she said then she was well enough to join by Spieden's book. But one thing that did give her pause was how upbeat the lone wolf was. Tensions were at an all time high at the Bend, and she wondered if it would make the woman tuck tail and run once she'd figured out the status quo. As much as she hated spreading this information around, not knowing what ears were listening or what they might do with the information, she really needed to be forthright. Maybe not the entire story, but enough for the potential join to make an informed decision, where details could be filled in once they could be trusted.

Spieden released a long sigh through her nose, wide shoulders shifting as she adjusted her footing, thinking about what to say. "First off, as long as you pull your weight, you're fine by me." She started, not wanting to leave that decision hanging. "But, I gotta be honest with you. Some lone wolves have been giving us real trouble lately, goin' after our members. I think we've got a handle on 'em, but I don't want you joinin' up just to tuck tail and run if that's something that's gonna freak you out."

OOC: Not a problem!

Annelise listen eagerly to what the woman before her had to say, her ears swiveling up and forward at the cue of 'I gotta be honest with you.' The Oak Tree Bend luminary couldn't know it, but the advisement came as something of an insult to the paladina. She quelled any indignance felt, however, as she knew such words were not intended to offend but as something of a favor to bother Anneliese and herself. It was only the truth that if Anna were a coward it would be better for her not to ally herself with a pack under siege. But if she were a coward, she'd have no place joining any pack at all. Someone who would turn and run from a threat, especially one directed at the innocent or their comrades, had little business surviving anywhere in Anna's eyes. Cowardice and evil were the two things she hated most. Again, Spieden could not know this, but it only gave the Schroder woman all the more reason to explain.

"I thank you for offering full disclosure, but the warning is unnecessary. Such phrasing might seem odd to you, but I was born to a Kingdom upheld by the nobility and valiantry of its denizens. Cowardice did not exist, for to run was to forsake everything that made you a wolf. I had earned my way through the ranks of our offensive forces to a station that's only purpose was to seek and destroy threats not only of the Kingdom but to any innocent who fell within our range. I do not mean to find an advantage in your packs misfortune, but one must appraise all opportunities laid before them, and I believe my addition to your ranks would be a benefit to us both. You will have earned an unfailing warrior, and I will once again have purpose."

Spieden watched dully as the green eyed wolf launched into quite the speech. It would have been moving if Spieden's heart were more than a bitter shriveled thing, and were her mind not occupied by all the worries, both banal and strange, that came with leading a pack. She couldn't help the slight quirk in her brows at "seek and destroy", finding the woman's earnest yet, in her opinion, pompous manner of speech slightly off putting. The Coho woman wasn't particularly well enunciated herself, and despite her propensity to blow things way out of proportion she was never quite as fervent as the woman before her. Spieden tended towards the humble side, and found herself more drawn to those alike. As much as her packmate Jessie managed to rankle her nerves, she did appreciate the woman's quiet dedication.

None-the-less, Spieden stayed respectfully silent as Anneliese divulged some of her skills and inclinations. As long as she were honest, Spieden would be a fool to turn away someone who could serve the pack as a stalwart guardian who did not shy away from the difficulties their pack was currently facing. She suspected that the woman would remain even after hearing the gritty details, once those came to light. That was not a worry in the least.

"Great, if that's what you're into, it's fine by me," Spieden responded with a slight roll of her shoulders, some of the stiff, formal edge dropping from her posture, a signal for the submissive she-wolf to rise. "Welcome to the pack," she said, "S'pose I should show you around?"

The woman, through her travels, had grown used to several less-than-positive reactions to her enthusiasm, pride, and choice of phrasing. Some thought her overzealous, others pompous, and some considered her to be downright odd. It didn't little to affect her, as the Schroder woman had an incredibly strong sense of self and was far too grounded within her own code and morality to be concerned of what others thought. However, the alpha before her seemed especially dispassionate. It would've caused Anna to become hesitant if it wasn't for the promise of ne'er do wells to hunt down. As it was, she only beamed back at the dappled charcoal woman, her low-hanging tail starting into a slow wag.

"Thank you, that would be wonderfully appreciated," she replied. Finally, once again, she had a home. Her determination was rock solid. She would not let this pack down, never again would she repeat her mistakes of Cut Rock River.

Spieden gave a brusque nod as Anneliese agreed to a bit of a tour. Heavy paws in motion brought her closer to the newest member, angling away at the last moment to roughly brush her shoulder against the creamy coated woman's own, leaving behind her scent with the bare minimum of contact. Continuing her path, she arced around to face the direction from whence she came, her easy amble taking her back into the territory with an expectation that Anneliese would follow. She knew the territory well, her route directed to a familiar path that would allow her to cover the ground she had yet to patrol given the sudden distraction. A more talkative alpha might have launched into idle chatter, but Spieden remained quiet and held the focused demeanor of a wolf keeping her eye out for threats. Her offer to show the female her new home truly consisted of more "show" than "tell".

Spieden's lifted snout detected something on the wind. The stale odor of a lynx, and an equally old scent of coagulated blood. Her lip lifted slightly in a grimace as she grew territorial over the thought of the predator encroaching in on their land.  She glanced over to Anneliese, making brief eye contact before directing herself towards the smell. "Should probably go check that out," she grumbled, veering off course and leading Anneliese a new direction. Her nose brushed closer to the ground, honing in on the scent until she discovered the deer carcass. With the cool spring days and ample shade of the forest, the meat was still fresh and the single lynx hadn't made much of a dent. Wherever the sneaky cat was, they seemed long gone now. Spieden didn't plan on leaving any behind in case it returned, though.

Now stopped, she looked to her companion with a single brow lifted in question. "Hungry? Should be enough for both of us, and you can help me cart back the rest."

Annelise blinked once at Spieden's course and unceremonious marking of her entrance into the Oak Tree Bend pack, slightly taken aback at how casual and seemingly uncaring the woman was. She tried her best not to judge however, and merely made a mental note that the Coho woman would be one to get used to. Looking at the positives, Anna only saw the opportunity to acclimate and learn to deal with a new sort of personality, even if it rubbed her lofty, out-fashioned self the wrong way.

As they walked, it was noticeably quiet between them, and Anneliese quickly caught on that there would be no explanations. Thus, her beryl eyes darted about her, taking in everything and making mental notes here and there. This was her home now, and she would be sure to memorize every inch of it. Being so attentive, she caught onto the scent of Lynx and death just as Spieden did. Her response to the other woman's glance and mumbling was an affirming nod before trotting after her onto this new course.

When they came to the meat, Anneliese appraised the scene, more worried about the feline rival than the easy meal. As a natural protector, it was innate to focus on the threat before satiating any personal needs. However, her new alpha offered her lunch and she did not decline. After stripping off a few bits of meat and making them disappear down her gullet, she spoke up.

"Will we hunt the lynx, or would you rather allow it a chance to leave your domain?"
