"You'll never be great without taking a chance"
ORREN BARANSKI

It was strange, standing here in the frozen marsh, talking to another pup like this. Orren was not a big conversationalist, while he never hesitated on speaking his mind, he rarely sat still for long enough to keep up a proper discussion; and yet here he found himself, having what could only be described as a 'chat' with the charcoal boy. Greer was intriguing - the River prince's experience with other pups was still quite limited, besides his own siblings, he had only met three others his own age, two of whom had connected much more with the less rambunctious Baranski's; And though he and Deacon had connected instantly because of their similarity, their brief time together had been spend more playing than talking. So it was a new experience, to have another peer completely to himself and be able to share his thoughts with someone who might understand, and who wouldn't go running straight to his parents with everything he said.

While he thought, Orren's shifting gaze had settled on the raven lad without him even noticing, persimmon eyes watching him absently, without scrutiny or challenge; the way an adult might watch an equal while talking. When he realized it, the copper tinted pup wondered briefly if he might be growing up, scoffing mentally at the thought; I better watch myself or I'll be turning into Aleksei! The notion made him shiver, he had very little desire to become like his disciplined, respectable brother. A sudden change in Greer called the bulkier boy's attention back from his ponderings, his own eyes narrowing as he watched the black brows furrow over his silver eyes.  The lanky lad answered the question about @Deacon with clear reluctance, seemingly frustrated with his own reply and Orren stared back in confusion; Wanted new home..?

After a long stretch of silence, the tawny chap finally regained his voice, but his eyes were still blinking with disbelief, and it could be heard as well, when he spoke; "He left..?" How could that be true? How could he? Orren was half believing he had misunderstood, maybe he didn't get Greer's speech problem as well as he thought? Surely there had to be some mistake! But there wasn't any other way to interpret the ebony pup's words; Don't know where he went?! Had he just up and left his family, without telling them where he was going?! In that specific moment, the adventurous boy, who had otherwise often debated leaving his own family, felt outraged! How could he? HOW could he just LEAVE? Anger flared in his orange eyes as he focused on the other child, tail no longer wagging, but standing out stiff behind him; "He just left?! Just like that? Without saying anything about where he went?! How could he do that?! How could he just leave his pack, his family..!" ME?! Orren felt betrayed, abandoned! Here he was, on his way to visit his friend, and he wasn't even there anymore. Dark lips tightened into a thin line, and copper ears fell back in sadness; How could he..?

Greer Archer-Lyall

The reaction of the agouti-coloured male had startled the statue, his silver orbs widening as words dripped off the boy’s cherry tongue. He seemed more angry than Greer had ever been over the news of Deacon leaving… obviously leaving his home was not something Orren had planned on doing. As much as he wanted to cut into Orren’s speech, the smudge allowed the yearling to vent his annoyance. ‘… just leave his pack, his family …’ Greer, too, had often wondered that, but after many nights pondering why D had left, it finally made sense. He did not leave because he disliked his family – he left for him; to experience more and see where he fit in Relic Lore.

“D not have plan – want to explore. Want to find D’s place,” he responded, butchering his thoughts with his broken speech. “Greer want to follow. But not yet,” he added with a soft roll of his shoulders as he studied the sparrow boy with his mercury gaze. It saddened him to see the sparrow boy so distraught over Orren’s absence. which only irritated him as empathy was a foreign concept to him. “D grow up.” Essentially, that was what had happened. Although he adored his family wanted to stay him them, Deacon had also grown up and needed to see if there was anything else. He had left on good terms with his mother, so there was no reason for the Archer-Lyall to come back if he decided that the Ridge was his forever home.

"You'll never be great without taking a chance"
ORREN BARANSKI

Venting helped a bit, the worst of his shock fading as the words spilled from his lips. In his outburst were all his own insecurities, all the things he had been struggling with when he himself had thought about leaving home. It hurt him to hear that Deacon had left, both because he hadn't come to say goodbye and, mostly, because he had been brave enough to do so, when the youngest River prince still couldn't.

First when the final word had left his maw, did Orren remember the situation and looked back at Greer, seeing the shock in the raven boy's pale eyes. He felt heat rush to his face and turned his gaze down in embarrassment, scraping a paw over the frozen ground. He hadn't meant to yell at the other, he didn't deserve that, it wasn't his fault, but like so often before, the youngest river prince's feelings had run off with him. Now he regretted his outburst, but he didn't know what to do about it.

The sound of Greer's snubbed speech made the copper tinted lad look back up, brows wrinkled and persimmon eyes wide. Unlike himself, Deacon's brother seemed to have made peace with his departure, and while he listened to the ebony wolf, he found himself wondering if his own family would be equally understanding. What Greer said, fit Orren's own thoughts to a tee; To find his place... All his life, the adventurous boy had felt that his was not in Cut Rock River, but he had continued to hope that he would find it one day; Maybe it's time for me too...

The wrinkles on his black forehead began to smooth as he realized what  Greer was saying, even if the swarthy lad's words didn't directly convey it; Deacon had not abandoned his family, he had simply left to travel, search out new experiences and satiate his thirst for adventure. A previously never thought of idea now popped into Orren's head; Leaving doesn't have to be forever..! Whenever the mischievous boy had before thought of leaving, it had always felt so final, travelling off would mean leaving his family behind for good. But maybe it didn't have to?

Greer mentioned himself, and the bulkier pup's attention was drawn from his ponderings, a small smile inadvertently returned to his lips. He nodded lightly, almost encouragingly, his new understanding making it easy for him to accept the statement; Find his own path... Orren felt an inexplicable rush of warm feelings towards the gangly age mate, a feeling that reminded him of the caring protectiveness he sometimes felt when looking at his sister, but different, he felt more equal to this colorless chap; A friend! For a moment, he seemed caught up in his own thoughts, and Orren wondered if they were going in the same direction as his own had before. Then the quiet voice sounded again, and his brows wrinkled yet again; Grow up. The ever present prospect, the road he could not choose not to take. Deacon had grown up; So I'll have to too.

With another nod, more solemn this time, Orren lifted his eyes to the sky, trying to gouge the time, though it was hard through the dense fog. There was no need to continue his little journey, since Deacon would not be waiting at the end of it, if he hurried though, he could probably be home before nightfall; I guess that's the plan then... He sighed lightly, already feeling the weight of the River's constraints lowering over him, but it was the only option, at least for now; Like Greer, he wasn't ready to leave home just yet. Turning his warm orange gaze back to the dark boy, Orren smiled again, wider this time, in the end, he had enjoyed meeting the age mate, and their conversation had given him a lot of stuff to think about. "You're right," The colorful lad said, voice a little husky; "I guess we all have to leave at some point." For a moment he just looked at the other, feeling a connection with him that was different from anything he had ever felt with another. Then he nodded again, as if confirming something; "It was nice to meet you Greer, thank you..." He hesitated, not exactly knowing what to say, and feeling a bit embarrassed at the sentiment; "For... Everything." He then ended, shrugging his shoulders a little resignedly. There was nothing else to say, so he waited, wanting to make sure that they had understood each other and Greer had nothing else to add.

if you want to make one more post and then archive, feel free. otherwise we can end here. <3 @Orren

It seemed as though the raven had managed to soothe the sparrow’s anxious thoughts. His expression had softened since Greer had first announced Deacon’s departure from the pack, and the Willow prince could tell that he was processing what had been said. It was understandable why the River wolf had become so distraught – Greer had been the same way when D had first announced he was going to leave. It had been difficult to grasp – his brother, littermate, friend… leaving? Why would he do that? How could he do that? His own thoughts had mirrored Orren’s outburst, and still remained unanswered as Greer had not yet come across his brother. “Home always home,” the raven added with another nod, his silver eyes glistening with a hint of a smile. “Can always return.”

Greer’s own words weighed heavy in his head and heart – leaving did not have to be permanent. If things did not work out beyond the willows he could return, but he would never know whether he was bettered suited elsewhere if he did not explore further. Perhaps he would encounter his brother on his own travels… perhaps they would end up a part of the same pack. He would not know unless he left the comfort of home; however, that was easier said than done. Greer knew his mother needed him right now, especially with the arrival of new siblings … eventually he would have to play puppysitter, regardless of whether or not he wanted to. His adventure would have to remain on hold until the pups did not require constant observation. Then he could forge his own path – hopefully before winter.

An unfamiliar, almost uncomfortable, smile appeared on his dark lips as the sparrow spoke once more, thanking the raven for… for what? Everything? Curious, the boy’s head cocked slightly as he pondered Orren’s peculiar words. It appeared that he had soothed the boy’s thoughts and enlightened him on the benefits of finding a home for himself. His smile widened, the discomfort decreasing the longer it remained on his maw. “Nice to meet Orren,” he responded with a soft nod, his tail wagging lightly behind him. “If Orren want new home maybe look for Greer? Greer can keep Orren company,” he added suddenly; the amount of words pouring off his tongue made him uncomfortable, but he felt as though he needed to say it. As much as the boy would prefer to travel alone, it was evident that a friendship had managed to spark between the two boys. Greer would not mind traveling beside the sparrow’s side; temporarily or permanently. Without another word, the raven touched the sparrow’s nose with his own briefly before turning away to return home.

Short one to finish it up ^^

"You'll never be great without taking a chance"
ORREN BARANSKI

He nodded, almost solemnly, at the ebony boys words; Yes, always..! At least he wanted that to be the truth, and for now, he chose to believe it. Then Greer smiled, and Orren returned the kindness, feeling both strangely calm and quite happy as he met the other boy's colorless eyes. The grimace grew into an outright grin at the final invitation, head bobbing enthusiastically in acceptance; "I will!" He promised, feeling like his heart was somehow lighter with this agreement. Maybe it was normal for boys their age to want to strike out on their own, and knowing that he wouldn't be completely alone in that endeavor made him somehow feel more okay with the whole idea. Whatever the reason, the two pups had made a connection on this day, and it was quite likely that they would meet again, whether that be to join up for a longer period, or simply to catch up.

Orren's brows flew up in surprise when Greer suddenly stretched forwards to give a physical farewell, and he stood a bit perplexed wile their noses touched, not knowing what to do. Then, before he knew it, the lanky lad had turned on his paws and was on his way home. Shaking his head lightly, the River prince smiled to himself, thinking that, though he had not succeeded in finding Deacon today, he had never the less managed to spend some time with a friend, and that was quite good enough for him. So he quickly spun around to head for his own home, tail wagging contently behind him; And I might even make it back before they notice I left!
