These were the lands his mother had spoken of? How empty of life it was. The thought crossed his mind as his golden eyes scanned the trees around him, noting that the pink flowers fluttering on the branches did match his mother's description of her once upon a time home. It was empty now though, devoid of any life, at least by wolves. The dens had been abandoned so long, the only smell was of things like foxes or badgers, that sort of ilk and any caches that had not been raided for their supplies had long since rotted away. He had stumbled across one not so long ago and nearly scrunched his nose at the amalgamation of small pearly bones that littered the hole. Only the bones and some tufts of fur remained of whatever the creature had been so there had been no point in digging it up any further. It was good then, he had snagged a fresh snack earlier on. The hare had squealed as he snapped its back with a flick of his head, after snagging it around its plush body. He’d also managed to track down its kits, shivering in their warren before he savagely killed all of them, managing to swallow all three of them, even after eating their mother. .It was his kill, Gods be damned if they were left for those unworthy of such work.

What a waste of resources. He had scowled at the cache before moving onward, coming across what seemed to have once been the communal den. It lay bare now, nothing but the faded scent of a fox having denned in it recently. A sneer crossed his lips at the thought. What a pathetic place this was, if now it were foxes that denned here instead of wolves, like should be proper. Even if they were the sort of wolves to just up and leave such a place, no matter how perilous it seemed to stay. The only safe way to live was within walls of stone and have the utmost care taken to guard any and all entrances. Not out in the open like this, no matter it was secluded in Magnolia trees.

Why did these wolves leave this place? There was no obvious reasons that he could tell with his exploring of the lands. No charring scars that showed a fire had swept through, that would have chased away both wolves and prey alike and kept them away. No earth shattering quakes that would have sent any animal with a lick of common sense running far away. It still felt too open to him, too many places for wolves to use to hide themselves and sneak up on you with.

His pack lands were much better than this...drivel. More fortified with walls of stone and so high up that anyone with eyes had a clear view of anyone coming towards the borders. It was much better this and then these flimsy things that tried to be trees. He chuffed with some indignation at them, deciding it'd be best to settle down here for the night. His home had been and was a large cavern set into a high mountain cliff, with three separate entrances that met up at one large empty space deep within. There were several smaller caves deep within leeching off it that were used as anything and everything from communal or private dens to infirmaries. though there were many that were unusable due to water having gathered in the lower caves.

He had always enjoyed sitting out in one of the entrances and staring out over the large expanse that were his and that he would one lead after his mother, as the rightful first born. But he had wanted to see more, thirsted for more than a great cavern and a deep verdant valley filled with everything he already knew. There was a curiosity to see new places that were different than what he was used to. But so far, he had been nothing but disappointed.

Perhaps, he pondered while lowering his head between his front paws and closing his eyes, this land would surprise him still. This was the first place he had seen after all. There had to be places better than this.

It better not let him down again.
