Tit for Tat, This or That

Would you look at that, there's a long, white tooth from a Bobcat wedged into the crevice of a rock. How did it get there? Do you think you can get it out?

Large paws danced along the uneven ground, small stones scattering with each well placed step, as the young male moved carefully up the mountain along the mountain trail. Above him shadows had reached their obsidian fingers across the sky, enclosing the world in darkness aside from the pale twinkle of the stars and the pearlescent beam of the moon. Golden eyes peered onwards towards the dark path that lay in front of him, searching for the areas where the moonlight blanketed the rocks, like beacons, they guided him forwards into the unknown depths ahead.

As he moved through the dappled moonlight, his eyes scanned each area the pale light touched, cautiously inspecting it from a distance for fear that be displaced beneath his feet if here were to be more bold. It was as his golden gaze searched for signs of such danger that his wandering eyes paused for a moment, fixated on a tiny area upon a rock where the moonlight was reflected just a fraction brighter. Lorcan moved in closer, half expecting to find nothing at all, but there in the crevice of the rock… again, something shimmered. Nostrils flared as he attempted to decipher its scent, before he got any closer. Feline. Intrigued, he stepped closer, allowing his tongue to stroke along the objects cold smooth surface for further investigation. White brows furrows as he tilted his head to the side as he questioned what it could be, staring a little closer. The sniglet was small, smooth and long in shape and smelled faintly of a cat. A tooth?

Utterly engrossed, Lorcan yearned to satiate his curiosity. He had to get it out so that he may properly inspect it. Unfortunately, being wedged in the crevice of a rock, the object was far from an easy steal. Salmon pink tongue curled out from charcoal lips and swept along the pale object a number of times, as he coated it in a layer of wet saliva. Forcefully, his tongue then curled around and prodded at the object in an attempt to displace it. Slowly, one of end of the tooth emerged from the crack in the rock, allowing the young male to carefully clamp his smaller front teeth around the exposed end and tug at it, his tongue working within the confines of his mouth to keep the tooth’s slippery coat of saliva fresh. Low growls thundered in his throat as he grew increasingly frustrated, his fangs clamping down harder, neck twisting from side to side as he pulled with more force, large fore-paws clambering up to push against the solid surface of the rock. Release. Neck snapped back, and his paws went flying as the tooth slipped out, resulting in the young wolf rather disgracefully landing on his back in flurry of gravel and dirt… with the feline fang still clamped between his teeth.

Home, she was once told, is where the heart is.

Home she realized, was not Oak Tree Bend, even if that was her current residence, the target of her current allegiance.  Even then, the wolf that had taken herself and her mother in before the winter’s harshest months had left – and that was putting it mildly, she suspected – and things had gotten strange following the birth of her half-sister.  Of Sahalie’s siblings.  It was as if she did not quite a place, and she was not certain she would find one among the forest wolves, even if she tried.

So she traveled to the rocky heights that once held her home.  Everything about this place simply felt right.  The cooler, drier air.  The sparse trees, the massive expanse of sky as far as the eye could see.  The rocks!  The slope!

A wistful sight whistled through her nose.  It was endsville, the plateau, and perhaps one day she would find a way to return to the home she did so love.  She might have gone on with those rose-colored glasses over fire bright eyes, had the scuffle of claws and rock not caught her ears.  The golden girl was off like a shot, following the source of the noise – she came upon the other wolf quickly, all but rolling down the hill, with something in his mouth.

Her brows furrowed.

“Are you raiding my caches?”

His body hit the ground with a loud thud, propelling tiny specks of dirt and dust into the air. Black nostrils flared as they struggled to breath within the cloud of dust that had enclosed all around him. A throaty cough spluttered out from behind charcoal lips, body tensing up as his lungs gasped for breath. A high pitched wheeze screeched through the air as he finally caught his breath through his clenched teeth, and Lorcan winced as his muscles relaxed to leave him sprawled belly-up on the ground. A sharp burn prickled along the ridge of his shoulders and towards his lower spine. Unbeknownst to Lorcan these areas which pained him were slowly turning his fur a menacing shade of crimson red. His tumble had littered his back with grazes.

No sooner had he opened his golden eyes to look around, did his gaze meet a pair of suspicious fiery eyes staring back at him. Momentarily forgetting about his awkward position, his eyes scanned the figure of the young female that stood in front of him, his eyes investigating the bright ginger colour of her pelt with curiosity. His russet ears pricked in confusion as the girl questioned him, accusing him of stealing from her hidden cache. Lorcan’s own brows furrowed in confusion, and his shook his head is dismissal, causing his body to fall over to one side. Another wince pierced through his lips as he felt the stinging burn crawl up his back. Large paws shifted as he carefully repositioned himself to sit sphinx-like on the ground, head lowering to delicately place to feline fang between the clutches of his out-stretched paws. A subtle grimace twitched on his face as he turned to her as he tried to hide his discomfort. “No, I’m afraid are you mistaken.” He stated, golden eyes dancing back to glance down at his prized possession. “I found this tooth wedged inside the crevasse of that rock. ” He still wasn’t sure how it had gotten there, but Lorcan was certain had not been left there on purpose.

Nevertheless, it was obvious that the young female was interested in it.

What exactly could he do with a random cat tooth anyway? Lorcan sighed, turning back to the girl, shifting to stand up, leaving the tooth on the ground where his paws had once rested. "But.. Here. Take it. I have no use for it anyway." He flashed a weary, submissive smile to the inquisitive girl as he began to move away slowly, still flinching from the fresh grazes on his back. The male needed to rest and recover and he was in no state for pointless confrontation. Sleep was the only thing that was of true value to the loner, and so Lorcan left the girl to claim the item he had worked so hard to possess, in search of a place to spend the remainder of the night.

“Ah.”

As the other wolf set down his small prize, it became obvious it was no stolen bit of food.  Kyna’s ears flipped backwards, cheeks heating up underneath her agouti pelt.  She’d accused this perfectly innocent mand of a crime, and he’d done nothing!  What on earth had compelled her to speak so rashly?

Her fire bright eyes followed his as he mentioned the tooth, and for a moment, the yearling allowed herself to consider all the possibilities.  How had it gotten there?  Did someone leave it on purpose, or had some unfortunate animal had the misfortune of losing a tooth?  Surely they wouldn’t want it back, that would be silly.  Before she could scold her own thoughts again, the stranger was speaking, and—

What?

For a moment, the youth could only stare dumbly as the lone wolf relinquished his prize to her without so much as a second thought.  “Are you sure?” she wanted to ask, but he had already turned away, heading back down the slope, in search of something else.  Of what?  Perhaps she’d never know.  Kyna fought back the urge to chase after him, shuffling instead to investigate the tooth.  She would have to bring it back to Oak Tree Bend.  Perhaps @Sahalie would like it.

The other wolf never came back.  Didn’t change his mind, didn’t turn around and demand the strange tooth he’d left.  Kyna glanced down, considering her prize with a twisted mouth – but if she didn’t take it, it would just sit here, wouldn’t it?  Wasted.  Surely the creature did not leave it behind with the notion to make it a gift, but it still seemed unappreciative to just leave it here.  To the mountain.  To the strange wolf who’d plucked it free from the rocks.

Another huff, and the yearling decided it was within her means to take the trinket – the first wolf had abandoned it.  It was within her rights.  She wasn’t being selfish, and if she brought it back to show Sahalie, and maybe some of the others, that was good, wasn’t it?

Carefully, the strawberry blond gathered up the small item in her mouth.  Deciding it was too dangerous to hold between her teeth, she tucked it under her tongue.  Returning home would be slow going, lest she trip on a stone and swallow the damn thing.  It would be lost – and surely that couldn’t be good for anyone.  Would rather defeat the purpose of sharing it, as well.  And so the girl went slowly, one foot at a time, making her way back to Oak Tree Bend well into the night.

Exit.
