It had been nice to see Jessie again, though Lilya did feel a small pang of guilt, not taking up Jessie’s offer to join her and her mate in forming a pack. In a way, she supposed it was a good thing she hadn’t. If she hadn’t joined the River, there was a chance that there wouldn’t have been enough wolves to hold it together. Besides, her seeking out Hearthwood River, and more specifically, Lachesis and Kisla, had been impulsive upon the news that Ruenna delivered. Her family was dead and she wasn’t sure she’d ever recover, and often it kept her up at night, wondering if she could have made a difference.

She pondered the ‘what-ifs’, but she never regretted the voyage she’d made, the decision to lead home, and her ability to find a new home where she could live her life without being forced to fight a war she didn’t believe in, against wolves who were cruel and would stop at nothing until every last one of them perished… she was glad they had forgotten her and her name, though part of her did let the thoughts of the fact that she was the last of the Valrorys line left weight down against her.

Would they be proud of her? Were they watching her now? Were they proud despite the shame they must have felt when she ran? She was following along the path of the border of Wild Rye Fields to head back home to where she was needed, wondering and thinking about all of the questions that troubled her mind at that particular moment. It was always when she was alone that her mind was the most dangerous.
