Salix Atea

Nauja moves up beside him and whispers, questioning what they should do.
Salix's ears twitch at the whispering, and his face contorts into that of thought. Hmm.
Several plans flash through his mind within an instant, and he hesitates on choosing just one.
The brush was surely going to make things more difficult. He decides on an approach, but his mind
still cannot decide on who should do what. Finally, he returns a whisper "Ye should go 'round
behind the brush."
His accent was slipping back into his speech. Looking forward toward
the movement, he continues "I'll go straight forward 'n scare em' toward ya when ye get
behind the brush."

He hadn't let his way of speaking fully return yet. Salix thought the plan was rather swell for
what they were given at the moment. The rabbit had no choice- it was either going to backtrack
and head toward the man or go forward straight to the woman. If it decided to slip out toward
either side, their swiftness would have to determine the rest. The gray and white wolf gives the darker
one a curt nod to signify putting the plan in action.

One rabbit would be a bit of a split between the two, but it would be at least some sustenance.
As long as they weren't using more energy to catch it than what it was worth, all would be well.

In the effort of working together Nauja asked him what he thought they should do in order to catch the rabbit.  While she waited for him to answer she assessed what their options could be.  It had to be a good plan that would surely work since they only had one shot.  If they failed they would have to start over and find something else to hunt.  Nauja didn't really want to find something else.  Luckily Salix came up with a plan of action that she believed would work. “I think that is our best option,” she commented about the plan he'd come up with.

It was only one rabbit they were hunting which meant that they would either have  to find another or share.  She didn't mind sharing if he didn't want to find another but she would help him if he didn't want to share.  Nauja felt they would have this rabbit in no time at all with the plan Salix had come up with.  They would only have a problem of the rabbit chose to run to either side then they would have to give more of a chase. The seagull prepared herself for the hunt they were about to embark upon.

With a nod to the man she slipped off to the side so she could get around behind the rabbit.  She traveled quickly and quietly until she came to the brush.  Then on her belly she crawled until she was closer to the rabbit and prepared herself to jump up at any moment.  Her eyes went to Salix across the way for any signal that he was ready to set the plan in motion.

Salix watches patiently as the woman slinks around
promptly behind the brush. The man lowers his head as the rabbit stretches its head upward
to look around. He sees its large black eye staring out in his direction. Standing stone solid, the
Atea wolf awaits till it begins feeding again before he makes a move. Once its head went back
down, Salix lowers his own head and drops his body slightly. Carefully he places one paw in front
of the other, remaining cautious as to not step on something that would give his position away.
His nostrils flare as he takes in the prey's scent; his heart began to pick up in pace due to excitement.
Taking in a deep breath, he decides that now was the moment to strike.

The long-legged wolf bounds forward, his jaws widening if the rabbit were to come his way. Eyes
narrow as his muscles ripple; he prayed it would go straight into either one of them. A wave
of disappointment strikes him as the rabbit suddenly decides to dart left. Shit, he thinks,
paws now sinking into the thawing ground. He was attempting to turn his body toward the
fleeing prey, but he knew he wasn't going to be quick enough. Don't be usin' too much energy,he quickly reminds himself.

His jaws snap at the hind left leg of the creature, but his attempt was unsuccessful. It was up
to Nauja's reaction time to determine whether or not this would be a success.

In her approach of the brush she wondered if working with Salix would go as smoothly as it had with others.  She hoped it did since she felt that would be the determining factor on if they were successful or not. She crept quietly and carefully behind the brush all the while watching the rabbit for any sign that it was aware of her presence or her pale companion's.  Just as she positioned herself behind the bush she saw the creature's head raise to look around.  Nauja held her breath as it looked directly at Salix and for a moment she thought they'd been made and it would be a wasted effort.  She let the breath out slowly when the rabbit went back to eating she knew they were in the clear. The seagull watched from the brush as Salix made his approach, she waited watching intently as the hunt began.

As Salix came forward toward the rabbit Nauja thought for a moment he had the creature dead to rights but then the not so unexpected happened.  It turned going to the side instead of toward her or the pale wolf making it easier for their prey to escape.  The seagull didn't waste any time, she jumped out from behind the bush and gave chase just behind Salix.  She did not want to lose this opportunity at a meal so she pushed herself to keep up with the pale wolf.

She saw him try and grab one of the hindlegs but when his jaws snapped shut on air she knew it was up to her.  She pushed herself even harder to gain ground on the creature not looking back to see what her companion was doing. Inch by inch her paws are up the distance until she was right behind the rabbit.  When it turned she used her tail to balance her as she turned  trying not to let the distance between them increase.

Nauja was thankfully on top of the situation. Salix follows behind her
as she tails the critter; she seemed highly determined to catch it. Salix's mind told him
to quit- they were pushing themselves too much for this small amount of food. Perhaps he
was overthinking it. A grunt of frustration releases from his throat as he quickly racks his thoughts.
He peels to the right, boosting his speed as much as his body would allow. He was tired from travel,
tired from barely surviving. He is lightheaded and mildly aggravated. Might as well go all out now-
why not? Screw it. If they let the animal escape, he wasn't sure how he was to react, but it most certainly
wouldn't be pleasant.

He manages to bring himself a bit ahead of the rabbit. The creature's eyes were wide with fear;
terror was blatantly written across its face. Salix brings himself inward to flank the rabbit and
cut it off from its path of escape. He huffs as he pushes himself to what he knew would be the
maximum effort given into this chase. Thankfully, the rabbit turns heel, reversing itself right toward
the pursuing woman behind it. "Now!" Salix snarls hastily. He skids on the ground to turn
himself toward the rabbit and the female, hoping to watch what was going to be the end of this
venture.

When Salix missed the rabbit it was a disappointment that the chase hadn't ever there.  She knew they couldn't expel too much energy chasing a rabbit they would have to split between them.  At the same time it might be the only meal they not get for awhile so it was a hard decision.  She didn't hesitate in picking up the chase because they couldn't let the creature go.  In the end she ended up pushing herself much harder than she wanted to.  The pale wolf's footfalls could be heard behind her as he had caught up with her as she gained on the rabbit.  Soon she was right behind it but still not close enough to waste the energy to try and grab it without being sure she would close her jaws around some part of it's body.

When the sound of Salix’s footfalls disappeared Nauja couldn't risk looking to see where he had gone. Her question was answered a few moments later as she caught sight of him out of the corner of her eye.  He was trying to come up in front of the rabbit to get it to turn it's path.  She hoped this time the chase would be over and they would have their meal. Much to the Seagull's relief the rabbit had turned and was now coming straight toward her.  The sound of Salix's snarl of 'now' reached her ears, she had been given her cue. She again didn't hesitate in what need to be done, as soon as the creature was in a close enough distance she reached out with her jaws closing them around the small body of the animal.  With it secured in her grasp she came to a stop to finish the rabbit off.

Salix breathes a sigh of relief when the woman snags the rabbit
and ends its life. The wolf's irritability hadn't improved. He looks to the ground and off
the the side, attempting to quickly gather his bearings before doing or saying something
harsh. He looks to the woman now and nods his head "Well done" the man says
simply. Seating himself on the cool ground, he decides to take a few minutes to settle his
racing heart. "Ladies first" the man huffs, closing his eyes. He felt like he needed a
nap. This whole chase didn't even seem worth it even though he had momentarily convinced
himself it had been moments ago.

As the wolf would start digging into the meal, Salix would mind his own to the best of his
ability. His stomach clenched, begging for food. Watching the woman tear into the flesh first
would just bite at his patience. His nose scrunches once more as while he is seated within her
proximity. The stench that emitted from her also made him start to lose his appetite again.
His patience was thinning. He needed to eat and take his leave.

With the end of the chase came the end of the rabbit as well and the time for her and the man to use what they'd caught for sustenance. Her sides heaved as she picked up the rabbit and brought it to where the man was. She dropped the rabbit at her feet a small smile crossed her face at his praise, “You as well.” Despite having missed he had recovered and came back to save the day in her opinion. It was such a small rabbit that Nauja had to wonder how they were going to share it but Salix spoke first telling her to take her turn. She wasn't exactly comfortable with taking the first turn at the meal they had caught together but she didn't want to offend him either.

It was with a nod that she settled down and began eating pulling the meat from the rabbits front end. She ate quickly thinking about how she might feel if she was in the man's place and not wanting to prolong his hunger anymore than he had hers.  When she had finished she pushed what was left of the rabbit toward the man, “Your turn,” she told him licking the blood from her lips.  She'd left him a little more than half of the rabbit, she was close to home and hoped Vasu might have something for her.

She finished her half rather quickly; she then
pushed the remainder toward Salix. Salix notices that a bit more than half was left for
him. He smirks lightly in thanks before leaning and grabbing the rest of the meal in his
jaws. After putting it down, he immediately goes to work on the flesh, ravishing the remains.
He didn't have time to enjoy it that much, no- he was way too hungry for that. The blood
stains his white and cream muzzle; a sense of mild satiation calms him.

He decided he would stay for a bit longer, but not too much longer. He needed a bit
to rest and let the food settle out before he started his search for a pack once more. The man
mimics what the woman had and licks the blood off his lips. "Where ye headin' to, Nauja?"
he asks, head tilting slightly to the left. "Meself, I've not a clue... lookin' fer a pack..."
his voice trails off as he looks into the forest. The cedar trees were lovely, but he needed a bit
more of open area. He liked to know what was all around him whenever possible.

The little bit of the rabbit she'd eaten and thought might tide her over until she returned to the thicket, and Vasu.  The rest she gave to the man, she felt he needed it more than she did but she would tell him that was why. Like he had before her Nauja calmly waited while the man had his fill of the rabbit. It most certainly wasn't enough to be a full meal but it was enough to ease some of the hunger pains. Sooner than she would have liked the rabbit was gone the only thing left were the bones.  It was time to move on from the rabbit and certainly from this place so that she could get back to Vasu and find out what he's been up to.

The man decided that he wasn't quite ready to go once they had finished their meager meal which was fine with the Seagull. Nauja watched him as he licked the blood from his face, she felt she'd cleaned herself up well enough.  “I'm heading to the thicket,” she told when he asked where she was headed, “There's someone waiting for me there.  Do you know which pack you would like to join?” She was by no means interested in joining a pack but it didn't hurt to know where the man was going to be.  Perhaps they could hunt again when prey would be much more abundance.
