All three litters had finally arrived in Hearthwood. The five new arrivals were healthy and thriving, just as Lachesis had hoped. They were certainly going to have their paws full—especially with five rambunctious children wrecking havoc on the older wolves—but with the collection of wolves they had acquired in recent weeks, they would have plenty of puppy sitters available. The ghost had been making sure that all three mothers were eating and providing milk for their children while also ensuring the rest of the pack was doing what was expected of them. There were patrols that needed to be done while he was tied up at the dens, and caches that needed to be filled. So far, the newcomers were working out well, and pulling their weight to provide for the pack. Even Aytigin—the wolf he had been the most apprehensive about. The large male certainly was trying, and Lachesis commended him for that.

Now that the river pack was overrun by small bundles of fur Lachesis was able to stretch his legs past the borders, straying into the lowlands. He skirted the monadnock, heading south once more, to the place he had collected sweet grass with Askan. He had promised the ebony wolf that he would bring a bundle of herbs for the expecting mother in Wild Rye; he just hoped he was not too late. He moved quickly, the bundle of plants hanging from his jaws as he honed in on the fields in the distance. After spending so many weeks cooped up inside the Kingswood it felt strange to be in such an open setting, so exposed. Part of him still worried that Mittani was still lurking around, but it had been weeks without another incident. He was hopeful that the pale rogue had vacated the lands of Lore.

Once he reached the edge of the fields Lachesis placed the herbs on the ground before taking a few steps back, creating as much distance between himself and the borders as possible. He threw his snout to the sky to call for any of the Rye wolves in hopes that one of them was lurking nearby. Although he would have preferred to see the ebony guardian he had come across a few times Lachesis would not protest an encounter with a member he had not met before. He was, after all, trying to form some sort of alliance with these wolves, for he had not gotten a chance to get to know them properly. Before Askan visited the borders of Hearthwood the ghost had made his own assumptions about the wolves to the west, for he had been wary of their intentions.

He waited patiently, hoping this encounter would be quick in painless. Lachesis did not have time for heavy conversation but he was not opposed to exchanging a few words before returning to the redwoods.

she says beauty is pain

With Jessie's due date climbing closer and closer, the Rye second kept as close as she could to the borders and she rarely strayed aside from when she took excursions out to see Laike. Those trips she took, she made sure not to stray from the Rye for more than a few days as to not raise any suspicion from her pack mates or raise alarm to the expectant alphas. The Snow woman was reluctant to share anything about Laike to anyone just yet, as she wasn't sure what to think of those feelings that bubbled inside her whenever she was around him or thought of the pale gentleman.

But at the thought of their last meeting, a smile etched upon her ebony lips as she traversed along the Rye Fields. A few days had passed since that night and the moon was almost to its third quarter, phasing closer to another new moon. The days grew closer to when she would see him again, but as she drew closer to the borders, she caught the scent of him then. At first she thought she was merely daydreaming, he wouldn't possibly travel all this way to the Rye so soon. But as her mismatched eyes caught the sight of a pale wolf in the far distance, her heart stopped.

If her eyes were to ever to be deceiving, today they decided to be. As she drew closer, trotting happily towards the River wolf she had thought to be Laike, the male's fur as absent of the agouti shading. He was stark ghostly white, with no gray marking his face and instead of warm, fiery eyes, she was met with pale green eyes. Changing her demeanor then, her bright eyes kept their friendly tone, but her tail slowed to a gentle wave as she stopped a few yards away from him. Dropping her head to smell the bundle of plants that the River wolf left at the border.

Smiling, she greeted the pale male unsure if this was Laike's alpha or not, “You must be from Hearthwood River?” She causally asked before introducing herself to the male. “I'm Adelayde, second of the Rye. What can I do for you?”

healer dem 2/3 -- delivering herbs/giving medical advice

The ghost remained where he was, his large paws shuffling nervously beneath him, as he waited for the arrival of a Rye wolf. He hoped that he was not too late—that Jessie had not yet given birth. If that was the case he would still leave the herbs for the pack, for they did not have a healer of their own. Lachesis still had a well stocked infirmary, and with Lorcán resuming the same position he had possessed in Whitestone, they had an abundance of medicine at their disposal. A few generous donations to the western pack would not be missed, especially since it appeared that spring was finally arriving in the lands of Lore.

As he spotted the tawny shape in the distance Lachesis took another step back, for good measure, his tail slack between his legs as he adopted a neutral stance. He was merely visiting; he did not want to leave a bad impression on their neighbours, especially when was starting to form a bromance friendship with Askan, a devoted member of the fields. The fur on the back of his neck bristled but his lips curved upward, a small smile stretching his pale features as the bright-eyed female approached. He watched, curiously, as she bent down to sniff at the herbs he had delivered, his head tipping to the right.

You must be from Hearthwood River? His ears twitched at her question. She was familiar with his pack—but who was she familiar with? He dismissed the thought, hoping that Ayitgin had not thrown a flurry of obnoxious words in her direction, tainting the Hearthwood image. “That I am,” he answered with a slow wag of his tail. “Pleasure to meet you, Adelayde. My name’s Lachesis, I’m the leader of Hearthwood,” he introduced coolly, his chartreuse gaze focused on her tawny frame. “I was collecting herbs with Askan a few weeks ago and offered to bring your pack some that would help with Jessie’s delivery,” he explained, motioning to the pile of herbs with his nose before adding a hasty after-thought: “I hope I’m not too late…”

Reyes

Adelayde was not the only wolf on the borders of Wild Rye Fields on this mild morning. The final coming of springtime and sun were a great relief to the swarthy male, especially with the knowledge that the lead female was expecting. Snow and wind were not exactly good for young pups – he’d had entirely different problems when his mother delivered the twins to sun and sand, but the general suspicion that harsh weather was bad for newborns remained. But that was not his business. He was not to raise the alphas’ pups – if that changed, they’d certainly tell him. Until then, however, he’d continue to move across the Rye’s borders, strengthening its scent and—

Well.

The wolf’s ears perked as he noticed Adelayde and an unfamiliar form on the horizon, breaking into a lope to join them. He only heard the tail end of the introduction, Lachesis, Hearthwood, Jessie’s delivery. Askan. He knew Askan? If his mate hadn’t bitched about the white wolf, he couldn’t be that bad. The beta was hardly one to suffer silently. “Not too late,” he confirmed, coming to a halt near Adelayde. “Any day now, though. We can make sure she gets them.” And while he was not very fond of Adelayde, he knew, at least, that the woman would likely only want the best for Jessie’s coming litter, as well. There was no need to worry there. “Is there anything we can do for the River wolves in return?”

The pale man was quick to respond, his words confirming the scent upon his fur was rightful. Not only was he a member, he was @Laike and the other River member's leader. Dipping her head in polite respect as he continued to inform her the reason for his visit. She was happily surprised that Askan got along with their neighbor's leader enough to spend time collecting plants. Hopefully, they were in the clear from having to keep looking behind their backs at their threatening neighbors. Smiling, she was to inform Lachesis that he was not too late, but she was beaten to the punch by the Rye's male delta as he came loping towards them.

With Jessie fast approaching the birth of her second litter, it wasn't surprising to see multiple Rye wolves patrolling or hunting for more food to fill the caches before the extra mouths came. So she was expecting another to quickly join her, though she was surprised it had been Reyes. It was no secret to the two of them that there was tension between them, though Ade couldn't go as far as saying she didn't like him. The Snow woman didn't know him very well and didn't know the way about getting to know Askan's sidekick. Since their last hiccup, she hadn't found the right time to confront Reyes and figure out what went wrong. Which seemed to heighten the uncertainty and tension that she wasn't sure if it as just her.

Refusing to let their neighbor's leader sense any tension within the Rye, she smiled as Reyes responded. Nodding, she confirmed that they would make sure Jessie would get the plants the River leader left them with. Though she wasn't exactly sure what plants did what or what they needed to do with them, she knew the River wolves wouldn't have ill intentions. Turning her blue-green eyes to Lachesis, she waited to see if they was indeed anything they could do for the River in return.

healer dem 3/3 -- delivering herbs/giving medical advice

It did not surprise him that another Rye wolf answered his call. Puppy season was fast approaching which meant that more patrols would be sent out to ward off intruders and collect food. Hearthwood was fortunate enough to grow in size prior to the arrival of their three litters, so Lachesis did not worry as much as he would have if they had remained at their previous size. It was why he had been able to slip away to deliver the herbs to the fields pack. Once @Inna and her daughter were settled the ghost took off for the western pack, notifying both @Lorcan and @Lilya prior to his departure. It was the only time he had wished their neighbours were closer, for he hated being away from the pack for so long. However, he was determined to keep his promise for he did not want his new friend to think he was not a man of his word.

He was pleased to see a familiar face come up behind Adelayde, his tail swaying in greeting as his chartreuse gaze turned to Reyes. “Good,” he hummed with a soft grin curling his lips. “@Askan already has the sweet grass we collected together,” he started before motioning to the herbs between them, “but these will also help @Jessie, if she needs them.” Aside from the brief herb tutorial he gave Reyes last week the river king knew that the Rye wolves did not have any medical knowledge. Lachesis wanted to help them out as much as possible, for mothers and puppies did not deserve to suffer. “Alumroot for pain and to stop bleeding. Yarrow for infection and fever. Lavender hyssop to relieve stress.” He pointed to each plant as he spoke before returning his chartreuse gaze to the duo before him. “Aside from the hyssop, she just has to eat them. Same with the sweet grass. She does not need a lot—especially the yarrow. Only use that if it’s necessary,” he instructed, hoping that the information he was sharing was digesting. “I hope everything goes smoothly and you won’t need much of the herbs,” he added, his right ear falling to the side slightly. It was always better to be over prepared.

He dismissed Reyes question with a soft shake of his head. “No, you don’t need to do anything for Hearthwood,” he responded quickly, his tone light as the words danced off his tongue, “Askan told me you were without a healer and I offered to help. I expect nothing in return.” Once Jessie had delivered and the dust had settled Lachesis would return once again to discuss the possibility of forming an alliance with their western neighbours. But, for now, that could wait.

“Speaking of Askan,” he started, his focus returning to the darker male, “how is he doing?”

Reyes

His silver gaze held a silent thanks that he was not forced to ask Lachesis for an explanation. Looking weak, or worse, needy was high on the list of Does Not Want, and that the white wolf remembered their last interaction was…nice. Refreshing, even. And that went down a whole other path of Definitely Do Not Want, so Reyes decided to look down at the collection the River alpha had brought, and commit them all to memory. Sweetgrass, alumroot, yarrow, and lavender hyssop. Dios mio. He was going to be come the healer that Wild Rye Fields needed at this rate!

“Mhm.” They would have to do something for Hearthwood River. Accepting all of this help – needed at first, and now as a gift – this was charity, wasn’t it? Askan was Lachesis’ friend, but why bring things for Jessie unless there was something Jessie, or her pack, could do in return? Pack politics as a whole was well and beyond the wolf (a likely reason behind his ousting from Blackwatch Canyon), and so he sighed, tucking it to the back of his mind so he could answer Lachesis’ question, instead. “He is doing better, thanks to you. Eating again, finally. Out and about.” Not very far, and sometimes required a good deal of coaxing, but he was alive, and recovering (even if slowly), and so Reyes had to content himself with that.

“Hopefully puppies lighten his mood. Or something.”

Sorry for holding this up! Post 3/3 Guardian Dem
she says beauty is pain

Standing upon the borders of the Rye fields, she listened on as the meeting continued. Before she had the chance to ask how and what she needed to do with the herbs the River King was giving them, he followed with giving them directions on what needed to be done and what each was used for. Focusing on everything he said, she wanted to make sure she knew exactly what needed to be done when Jessie gave birth. It was important someone or multiple minds knew what to do when the time came, so she was glad she wasn't the only pair of ears listening for the Rye Queen. After this meeting, Adelayde intended to go straight to her expecting alpha parents to give them the news and bundle of herbs from the River pack.

As Lachesis and Reyes continued, her tongue held back as the two of them began to talk about Askan. The fact that the River alpha was also an experienced healer who helped Askan in his time of need, it made it even more evident that the Rye should repay them in some favor for their generosity and eagerness to improve their relations. The beta was happy to have allies with them and hoped nothing would change as one could never know when enemies could surface and they needed a trusting ally to aid them. Listening to Reyes' response, she hoped to hear Askan was getting better more physically and emotionally. Ade knew Askan was a tough cookie, but one could never tell how much something could affect someone. Especially when someone didn't share a lot about themselves.

@Reyes @Adelayde <3 if this works for you guys you can have your next posts as your exits! :B

The female remained silent but Lachesis was not surprised. They were strangers, whereas he and Reyes were not. Lachesis had helped the dark, scarred male when he had arrived at the Kingswood borders, frantic and determined. Although he had not been able to return to Wild Rye himself, for the unexpected attack on Askan had occurred too close to the birth of his own children, XIX had taken the male halfway (after feeding him with medical information). The ghost would have preferred to see Askan’s wounds himself, but he knew it was not possible. Inna was expected to give birth at any moment and he would not have forgiven himself if he had missed it.

He was pleased, though, to hear that Askan was doing well. Ecstatic even. He thought of the chocolate Selwyn as a friend; since he and Reyes parted ways the injured male consumed his thoughts often. “Good,” he retorted quickly with a shark nod, a half smile perched effortlessly across his dark lips. “I meant to come sooner, to see how he was doing, but shortly after I saw you our last litter arrived,” he added glumly, his ears twitching as he spoke.

“Or something,” he repeated, his crooked grin deepening as his maw fell to the side. Askan did not really seem like the puppy-type to Lachesis, but he could be wrong. If anything, Reyes would be the one to cheer the chocolate male up. The alabaster healer was glad that his friend had someone like the scarred male in his life—someone who cared for him unconditionally.

Enough to run across the tundra to save them.

“I should be going, though,” he announced with a dismissing wave of his tail. “Tell Jessie and Drestig that Hearthwood wishes them well. And, if you need anything else, please do not hesitate to visit us.” He took several steps back, distancing himself from the Rye wolves. If they did not need anything else from them he would be off, for he had a cornucopia of puppies to tend to in the woods.
