Hearthwood River The First Day of the Rest of Your Life

When she woke in the den she shared with her mother Inna still hadn't returned, the pup was disappointed but she had something else in her mind. It was Reid's first real day in the pack and Lack had set him a task. She wanted to make sure that Reid's trial period went well so without wasting any time she left the den.

The little Baranski ran through the Kingswood toward where she knew the red man had spent the night. She quickly found his still asleep, that just wouldn't do. He needed to be up and starting his hunt so that Lach would see how much Reid wanted to be in Hearthwood. Oksana didn't stop running toward him before she jumped on him.

“Come on Reid, it time to get up we have to go hunting. You have to show uncle Lach,” she cried as she landed in him before licking his face to help wake him.

He had gone to sleep the night before thinking about what he could try and catch to put into one of the caches. He had decided that something simple would be the best because he wouldn't be able to track something as big as say a deer, kill it, and bring it back on his own. Sana would be coming but with a creature that big and her being so young yet, he didn't want to put her at risk. So something small would be preferable.

Night had fallen and when morning came it found Reid sleeping soundly. He didn't wake up at the sound of small paws running towards him. He did wake up when Sana's small body landed on him. Eyes snapped open as he startled awake. For a moment he thought that he was under attack and his body tensed but when his small friend's voice filled his ears he relaxed instantly. Letting his head flop back onto the ground he groaned and hid his face under his paws away from his friend's ministrations.

Mmmm....Five more minutes. He whined to her as if he was truly tired and wanting to sleep more. However, Sana's antics had him wide awake now and no matter how much he tried he couldn't stop the smile that spread on his face.

Having grown rather attached to the red man Oksana was going to do whatever was in her power to make sure he stayed. So if that meant waking him up so they could go get his catch to put in the cache that was what she was going to do. It was a good thing she was up rather early so they could get a good start on the day. Show uncle Lach how dedicated Reid was then he would surely let her friend remain with Hearthwood.

Her tactic to get him out of bed was of course to pounce on him and shower him with puppy kisses until he was up. She gave him a reminder of what they were supposed to be doing and she wasn't giving up that easily. When his head fell back she slid to the ground right next to him giving him a little push with her forepaws.

“No, not five more minutes. We need to get started and make sure we get the best one.” Then she stopped as she laid her dark head on the ground in thought. “What are we hunting today?” She asked the red man as she sat up and looked at his covered face.

When her kisses didn't work Sana began to push on him. Reid tried to hide the grin that crossed his face but failed miserably. Her antics were just too amusing and he couldn't help it. She explained that they needed to get the best one. Of what though? Had Miss Sana thought about what they would be hunting today?

She stopped pushing on him and he heard a soft thud and peeking out from between his paws he noted that she had put her head on the ground next to him before returning to a sitting position. Reid rolled onto his back with his paws curled against his chest and stared up at her still grinning.

I was thinking something along the lines of a rabbit or squirrel.He responded wondering if his choices would dissapoint her. Why did you have something in mind? He asked wondering if she had thought of something for them to go track down. He didn't know what was all the area so she might have seen what some of the other pack members had brought back from hunts and have a better idea than he did. Rabbits could be found almost anywhere so he knew that he could catch one of those. Squirrels were a little bit trickier so a rabbit might be the best bet.

All of her tactics to get Reid up and on the hunt were failing as he continued to lay there but at least he'd uncovered his face. She could now see it when she spoke to him. Oksana was eager to get going and had been looking forward to hunting all night. Which was probably why she had been up so early.

With her mother still not back Oksana had plenty of time that she could either spend worrying about the Raven or she could do something her mother would want her to do. She had thought about what Inna would be like when she returned and if she would still be so sad it if she would be the Inna she'd been before everything happened.

Oksana curled up against Reid's neck while she waited for him to get up. “Not squirrels,” she told, “They are much too small,” she responded when he spoke if the pretty he had in mind. “A nice fat rabbit, uncle Lach will be pleased with that.” She'd given it some thought the previous night before falling asleep. “We should hunt in the Kingswood,” she added as an after thought as she looked over at him.

When he uncovered his face he was able to see how she seemed to be almost bouncing. She was really excited to go hunting wasn't she? He didn't think he had ever been that excited about it when he was her age. He had been more interested in finding the nice sunny rock to nap on. Oh, and playing with his siblings.

Finding that her attempts weren't getting him up she leaned against him. He gazed at her with an amused expression. Had she given up already? Too bad he had been interested to see what else she was going to do to him in order to get him up and going.

She immediately told him that squirrels were much too small and on that, he had to agree. They were a little on the stringy side. She went on to tell him that a nice big rabbit would please Lach the best. Reid didn't care that much to please the other male, he would simply go along with what he was told and keep himself busy so that he wouldn't be kicked out. In truth, he was much more interested in keeping his friend happy.

Well then I guess we better get going on looking for the biggest rabbit in Kingsfall. He told her as he rolled away so that he could stand up. Shaking himself of the dirt that had gathered on his back he winced slightly at the way his shoulders complained about the movement. Then looking to Sana once more he gave her a grin as he stepped away. So Miss Sana do you know where we can find a rabbit in this place?

His face was uncovered and he was awake and looking at her so she was that much closer to getting him up. He didn't seem too keen on rising to his feet, she wondered if all of the adults were this slow in getting up in the morning. She thought about Inna before she'd gotten sad and couldn't remember if she was slow to get up or not. They way her mother talked about duties Oksana decided she probably didn't lay about in the morning.

While curled against him the little Crow laid her head across his neck and reached up to lick his chin. It was the only other thing that she could think to do to get him up.

She didn't like the idea of hunting squirrels, she'd never been able to catch one and they were just too twitchy. She felt they would have better luck with rabbits, they were a little high strung but easier to sneak up on. It had to be a big rabbit too because she didn't want Lachesis to be angry with Reid. The leader already seemed upset about her mother and didn't seem to trust her friend too much. It had to be a fat rabbit.

“Yes we should,” she said getting to her feet and grabbing one of his paws in her mouth before giving it a tug. “Lots of work to do today,” she chirrped, “We mustn't waste time. We have border patrols to do too.” Her mother had told her about them and what needed to be done, she just hadn't showed the pup. “By the river I think would be a good place to start,” she answers when asked about a good place.

A young deer has been separated from the rest of its herd. Hunt Opportunity

Sana gave him a kiss on his chin and Reid gave her an affectionate bump in return. She was really trying to get him moving, wasn't she? Jumping on him licking him and leaning against him. He should probably reward her efforts by actually doing the thing that she wanted. Plus he did need to get up at some point instead of just laying here watching Sana's attempts with growing amusement.

So with a roll he got to his as Sana tugged on him he grinned down at her form as she told him that they had lots of work to do. She also went on to add that they would be doing border patrols beside hunting. Not a bad idea actually but he was more amused that she was adding things to list to do that day. She also said that the river was a good spot and Reid began walking in that direction not questioning her judgment. They could always try a different area if they couldn't find some rabbits near the river.

Did you want to add anything else to our list of things to do today? He questioned looking down at her wondering if there was anything else she had planned for them to do besides hunting and border patrols. Those two things alone could take some time but he wanted to see if there was anything else she wanted to do with him today or if she was content to follow him around on while he did those two things.

The little Crow was growing worried that her attempts to get Reid up and moving were not doing what they were intended to do. Laying there nestled against she was starting to think she was going to have to come up with something else to get him moving. Something maybe a little more dramatic? Or aggressive? On the other paw she didn't really mind laying there with her friend enjoying his company and he really should be resting since he was hurt.

She had to remind herself that uncle Lach wouldn't be happy if they didn't find a gift for Hearthwood. So her thoughts returned to getting Reid going. Luckily she didn't have to put too much thought into it as he finally got to his feet. She smiled up at him as he looked down on her. She got to her paws too and was soon giving her thoughts in their plans for the day. She wanted Reid to be doing everything he could so that Lachesis would let him stay.

A thoughtful look crossed her dark features as she gave some thought about what else they had to do that day. She nodded, “Once we do all of that I think we should find a nice sunny spot to nap in.” Just because her mother was away didn't mean she shouldn't be doing all of the things her mother would want her to. With Reid there they could do those things together and Oksana knew just the spot where they could have their nap too.
