Corsair was a piece of cheese, lazily melting on toast. That was, if wolves could be made out of cheese and rocks of bread. He'd found one of the very few spots in the Spectral Woods where a bit of light filtered through the dark canopy above him. After going much farther from home than he'd intended and had decided that he deserved a small rest. A small rest turned into him quietly snoring and laying where the warmth hit him in all the right places. He was a heavy sleeper, his paws and maw twitching as he dreamed. Eventually he shifted, which ended up in a yelp and a rude awakening. All good naps had to come to an end eventually.
He blinked the sleep from his eyes and licked his bruised side. He had a good ways trek home and he might as well get going before his parents got too worried. Even half-asleep he knew exactly where to go, so Corsair walked through the darkness of Spectral Woods with heavy eyelids. He was mid-yawn when he bumped into someone, which woke him up a little bit more. They hadn't smelled familiar. "Watch it," he growled, even knowing that he was the one who had bumped into the other. He got a better look at the wolf, who looked weird and was a little bit bigger than any wolf he'd seen. The legs were all wrong, and there wasn't a tail! Sure, it had black fur, and lots of wolves had black fur, but so did other things, right?
The not-wolf growled at him, and then did something amazing: it stood up on its hind legs, dwarfing the young boy. It roared, spitting a combination of berries and drool right on his face. Some of it got in his eye. Suddenly realizing that he was defenseless, and his stupid legs weren't working, he used the only weapon at his disposal. Corsair screamed.
He had not ever seen a bear before.
